I've been following along with one eye while dealing with other stuff, but great poll and great rollout, Tarfumes. Thanks for running this one!

I'm just glad "Sparks" made the top 50. Not surprised "Substitute" won -- it's just got all that consciousness saturation, being covered by the Sex Pistols, Ramones, Richard Thompson, and whoever else.

and here I predicted confidently a couple of days ago that "Going Mobile" would have to post, given that "Love Ain't For Keeping" and "My Wife" (which never got FM radio play that I heard) did! Well the low placement of a lot of the songs that were inescapable on classic rock stations through the following decades surprised me (and pleased me, yeah).

As for my TRIUMPHANT! and "couldn't face another show, no" moments, see my ballot below:

songs

1 Our Love Was, Is (#21)
2 I Can’t Explain (#6)

was "Going Mobile" ever especially well regarded? i feel like i heard it on the radio more than almost any other Who song in the '90s but it's kinda disappeared since then and i don't miss it one bit.

tylerw, the creatorw (some dude), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:50 (eleven years ago) link

I don't miss it either, but Dave Marsh liked it and back when I was 15 it, like nearly all the rest of Who's Next, seemed awesome to me.

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:53 (eleven years ago) link

Thanks for the kind words, everyone! I really dug doing this poll; always love to read folks' views on the 'Oo.

As for "We're Not Gonna Take It"/"See Me, Feel Me," the former got more votes, but obviously neither had enough for the top 50. Also, clemenza, each "Circles" only got one vote; if I'd combined them, it still wouldn't have made the final results.

And Romney doesn't know what day it is... (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:55 (eleven years ago) link

"Goin Mobile" I mostly appreciate for the envelope-filter solo. (gtr nerd)

Nice poll, Tarfumes! (Didn't submit a ballot myself as usual but whatever)

i love Who's Next as a whole but when ballot time came i could only find room for 3 of the most popular tunes off of it (although my ballot was pretty chronologically spread out, no more than 3 songs off any one album)

Kinda wish I'd voted up some more Quadrophenia in retrospect -- now that I've hung out with it for a while I feel less like it's a pure album-album -- there's a lot of corking tracks on there

Thanks--I guess "Circles" isn't as well known as I thought it was. As you can deduce from my ballot, "Substitue"/"Circles" would probably be my pick for greatest two-sided single ever...one of three or four, anyway. (Don't think there's been a ballot without "Substitute" yet.)

clemenza, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 22:01 (eleven years ago) link

I'll have to hear Circles, Clemenza... hooray, another vote for "Don't Look Away"!

Now, who else voted for "I Need You" or "Whiskey Man"...? And how did "We're Not Gonna Take It" (which on the album is basically three songs together) not make the top 50?

That's the original B-side "Circles," which is similar to, but even better than, "Instant Party." I was also surprised "We're Not Gonna Take It" didn't sneak in--for me, it's the one song that leaves Tommy's overreach behind.

Someone needs to compile a best-of of the non-album, non-a-side tracks from the 60's. "Dogs" is wonderful, and "Little Billy" is great too. Last night I just heard "Dr. Jeckyll/Mr Hyde" for the first time, and it kicks arse as well...

i always think of it as an album. the who didn't like it like the beatles didn't like capitol cash-ins, i think. but sometimes you get so used to things they seem normal and fine.

tarfumes, be honest, how many times have you listened to roger daltrey's 8 solo albums?

scott seward, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 23:16 (eleven years ago) link

Truthfully, I've only listened to the first one (Daltrey) all the way through more than once (and it's great). I'm curious about One Of The Boys, less so about Ride A Rock Horse. The others? Meh.

you're a brave man, Tarfumes.

Any recommendations on Ox's solo stuff? I was thinking about dipping a toe in.

Tommy way slept on in this poll I think---p shocked that "The Acid Queen" only got 30 votes; are those all mine? in hs that was THE Who song in my circle of friends

great poll though, i should revisit the debut

YES! Smash Your Head Against The Wall is brilliant; there's a fascinating take on "Heaven And Hell," some heaviness that gives Sabbath a run for its money ("My Size"), and the most beautiful songs he'd ever write ("What Are We Doing Here?" "Ted End," "I Believe In Everything").

The two or three songs I've heard from the rest of his solo albums didn't make me want to hear any more of them, though (except for Whistle Rymes, which is supposed to be decent).

I wanted to put Acid Queen in, really I did, but there was too much competition

i missed out on this poll but i would've voted for 'we're not gonna take it' -- there's something so weirdly moving about it, the way it transitions back and forth between the intimacy of 'see me, feel me' and the interaction with the crowd. one of the few moments on the album where the whole concept really works for me. oh and needless to say i much prefer it to that other fuckin' worthless song of the same title.

I also had to miss several great songs from Who By Numbers from my ballot, like Booze and Waist

yeah, smash your head is essential, but all of his solo albums have a couple of cool tracks. and you need this album for primo disco ox.
