YES

some dude, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:40 (eleven years ago) link

funny enough I was just writing prediction that my own #1 would take the top spot by miles and miles when tarfumes posted

Dr X O'Skeleton, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:40 (eleven years ago) link

The barely controlled chaos of "I Can See for Miles" is one of my favorite things in all of music. A pop song on top, a world war underneath, with horses charging and bombs falling and at the end everything is in ruins.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:41 (eleven years ago) link

i voted for both but #2 more out of a sense of duty 'well of COURSE it has to be in any list of Who songs' way and #1 in a 'fuck yes this song is so great' way

some dude, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:41 (eleven years ago) link

You nailed it, tipsy.

I must admit Substitute makes me a little uncomfortable because of the line about his dad being black. I realise the way it was intended but its just, well, of its time..

Dr X O'Skeleton, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:43 (eleven years ago) link

yeah tipsy 100% otm

it really is a joy to listen to

ICSFM: I love the way Moon graffitis all over it

Dr X O'Skeleton, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:45 (eleven years ago) link

"I Can See For Miles" might be my favorite Keith Moon studio performance. Other than that, tipsy pretty much nailed everything great about it.

cwkiii, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:46 (eleven years ago) link

hahaha Schlitz rocks america lol

I never see anyone drinking Schlitz anymore. What happened?

This would be a great poll. No nominations thread, just vote!

cwkiii, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:51 (eleven years ago) link

I like this song and gave it a high vote, but not at all what I expected at #1

yeah me neither

it doesn't quite capture the range that they were capable of - at least, not as well as some of the other songs in the top 10

Many thanks for running this poll, Tarfumes. It's been an Amazing Journey that will always have a special place in the Tommy's Holiday Camp of my heart.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:08 (eleven years ago) link

i feel like this is the first time something somewhat unexpected topped one of these artist tracks polls that my reaction wasn't "OF COURSE ilm likes that song best, rmde"

some dude, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:09 (eleven years ago) link

some dude otm. I actually like Substitute -- maybe not high enough for it to be #1 most representative Who track, but definitely not a challop placing at all.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:11 (eleven years ago) link

Was expecting 'Miles' to be #1 but this whole top 5 is awesome. Thanks, Tarfumes.

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:12 (eleven years ago) link

I had a crush on a punkrock boy in my art class in 10th grade; I think 50% of the reason for my crush was that he had I WAS BORN WITH A PLASTIC SPOON IN MY MOUTH emblazoned in liquid paper on his pencil case <3 <3

And yeah Tarfumes I think we need to vote you in as official Who archivist of ILX. I thought myself a pretty big Who fan before the poll but I've learned SO much. This thread is a freaking goldmine of material.

TOTALLY, exemplary work all around, couldn't have asked for a better execution of this poll

some dude, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:16 (eleven years ago) link

Absolutely, nice work Tarfumes

Dr X O'Skeleton, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:18 (eleven years ago) link

My number one was number one. This gives me the moral authority to shame you all for not voting for Doctor Jimmy, I've Had Enough, Dreaming from the Waist, Amazing Journey, Bellboy, and Guitar and Pen. Well, ok, there's no shame in not having voted for Guitar and Pen, it just blew away young teenage me at exactly the right time, even if the bass playing is a rare example of Entwistle completely screwing it all up.

Three Word Username, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:19 (eleven years ago) link

also does it make any sense if i say TOO LOW at "A Quick One" being #5?

some dude, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:20 (eleven years ago) link

Personally, I think y'all need to appreciate Tommy a little more. How could Sally Simpson and especially Go To The Mirror fail to chart?

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:20 (eleven years ago) link

i feel like someday i will give Tommy its due. for the time being i'd rather listen to the Live At Leeds run through it.

some dude, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:23 (eleven years ago) link

I voted for I've Had Enough and Amazing Journey, also the Underture, I Don't Mind, The Red Blue and Grey... none of them saw the light of day. Guess there's just too many killer tunes

Dr X O'Skeleton, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:23 (eleven years ago) link

Substitute has some of the greatest lyrics in history, a terrific number one.

Thanks for running the poll, Tarfumes!

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:24 (eleven years ago) link

Hey I was poking around the youtubes last night and I found that Quadrophenia doc (or one of them, I think it's the new one?)

Totally reinspired me to go back and hang out again with Quadrophenia (twice in two weeks, crikey)

I swear I almost bawled several times this time around. It's such a freaking gift of an an onion of an an album; the more you know about this album the richer it becomes.

and here I predicted confidently a couple of days ago that "Going Mobile" would have to post, given that "Love Ain't For Keeping" and "My Wife" (which never got FM radio play that I heard) did! Well the low placement of a lot of the songs that were inescapable on classic rock stations through the following decades surprised me (and pleased me, yeah).

As for my TRIUMPHANT! and "couldn't face another show, no" moments, see my ballot below:

songs

1 Our Love Was, Is (#21)
2 I Can’t Explain (#6)
3 Substitute (#1)
4 So Sad About Us (#11)
5 Tattoo (#13)
6 I Need You
7 Whiskey Man

8 I Can See For Miles (#2)
9 Odorono (#45)
10 Rael
11 A Quick One While He’s Away (#5)
12 Don’t Look Away
13 Relax

14 I Can’t Reach You (#12)
15 Mary Anne with the Shaky Hands (#35)
16 The Good’s Gone
17 We’re Not Gonna Take It / See Me, Feel Me

18 Pinball Wizard (#17)
19 My Generation (#8)
20 The Kids are Alright (#3)

Albums

1 The Who Sell Out (#1)
2 A Quick One (#8)
3 Meaty Beaty Big & Bouncy (#5)
4 The Who Sing My Generation (#6)
5 Tommy (#7)

“Least Favorite” Who Songs

1 Who Are You? (#2)
2 Sister Disco
3 The Song Is Over

4 Love, Reign o’er Me (#3)
5 Magic Bus (#9)

Vic Perry, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:48 (eleven years ago) link

was "Going Mobile" ever especially well regarded? i feel like i heard it on the radio more than almost any other Who song in the '90s but it's kinda disappeared since then and i don't miss it one bit.
