Very surprising results. I have no idea what 2 of the top 3 could possibly be.

Oh wait, never mind. I know 2 that will finish fer sure (won't say) but the 3rd is a mystery

I only know one for sure, but I can't recall yesterday's results

Yeah I'll buy that. Fking great harmonies...and I love how in that classic early Who style it's got lovely harmonies but that menacing drum/bass combo rolling along underneath to create a nice happy/angry contradiction

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:21 (eleven years ago) link

Power pop starts here.

Lee626, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:23 (eleven years ago) link

OK. The last two are fairly obvious. Which will finish on top?

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:25 (eleven years ago) link

I didn't vote for My Generation cuz yeah I'm sick of it. also every time I hear it I remember the anecdote about how Roger adopted the stuttering delivery as a joke on one of the engineers (who had a stutter) which just seems cruel

no I had a book as a kid that was called something like "The Stories Behind 100 Pop Hits" or something and it specifically told the story of how the stuttering take was a goof, something Daltrey sang to make fun of the engineer/studio assistant since there was some technical issue with Daltrey's playback, and then how the band was surprised when that was the take that actually ended up on the pressing. of course, this was in the days before the internet, so its entirely possible this was just some unsubstantiated rumor/hearsay that the author was drawing on. nevertheless, it's what I think of when I hear the tune.

Think it's bol, anyway

Mark G, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:32 (eleven years ago) link

Nice innovation, some dude! Love the asterisk technique. And those are definitely the top 2.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:32 (eleven years ago) link

^^^^ now I'm thinking of Roger Daltrey telling Homer Simpson "These are all Grand Funk Railroad songs!" xpost

I love em both, but voted * *** *** *** ***** *** ***** as my own #1. I'm really surprised ********** is this high. I'd be fine with it at #1, because it would be less predictable.

xpost: aha!

Now here's a surprise

Mark G, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:38 (eleven years ago) link

YES

some dude, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:40 (eleven years ago) link

funny enough I was just writing prediction that my own #1 would take the top spot by miles and miles when tarfumes posted

Dr X O'Skeleton, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:40 (eleven years ago) link

The barely controlled chaos of "I Can See for Miles" is one of my favorite things in all of music. A pop song on top, a world war underneath, with horses charging and bombs falling and at the end everything is in ruins.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:41 (eleven years ago) link

i voted for both but #2 more out of a sense of duty 'well of COURSE it has to be in any list of Who songs' way and #1 in a 'fuck yes this song is so great' way

some dude, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:41 (eleven years ago) link

You nailed it, tipsy.

I must admit Substitute makes me a little uncomfortable because of the line about his dad being black. I realise the way it was intended but its just, well, of its time..

Dr X O'Skeleton, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:43 (eleven years ago) link

yeah tipsy 100% otm

it really is a joy to listen to

Dr X O'Skeleton, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:45 (eleven years ago) link

"I Can See For Miles" might be my favorite Keith Moon studio performance. Other than that, tipsy pretty much nailed everything great about it.

hahaha Schlitz rocks america lol

there needs to be a genre of 'Songs that make you feel like you're flying'

This would be a great poll. No nominations thread, just vote!

cwkiii, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 20:51 (eleven years ago) link

I like this song and gave it a high vote, but not at all what I expected at #1

Lee626, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:00 (eleven years ago) link

yeah me neither

stop swearing and start windmilling (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:02 (eleven years ago) link

it doesn't quite capture the range that they were capable of - at least, not as well as some of the other songs in the top 10

stop swearing and start windmilling (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:03 (eleven years ago) link

Many thanks for running this poll, Tarfumes. It's been an Amazing Journey that will always have a special place in the Tommy's Holiday Camp of my heart.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:08 (eleven years ago) link

i feel like this is the first time something somewhat unexpected topped one of these artist tracks polls that my reaction wasn't "OF COURSE ilm likes that song best, rmde"

some dude, Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:09 (eleven years ago) link

some dude otm. I actually like Substitute -- maybe not high enough for it to be #1 most representative Who track, but definitely not a challop placing at all.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 12 September 2012 21:11 (eleven years ago) link

Was expecting 'Miles' to be #1 but this whole top 5 is awesome. Thanks, Tarfumes.

I had a crush on a punkrock boy in my art class in 10th grade; I think 50% of the reason for my crush was that he had I WAS BORN WITH A PLASTIC SPOON IN MY MOUTH emblazoned in liquid paper on his pencil case <3 <3

And yeah Tarfumes I think we need to vote you in as official Who archivist of ILX. I thought myself a pretty big Who fan before the poll but I've learned SO much. This thread is a freaking goldmine of material.
