a hoy hoy what album are you picking up?
Torche should appeal to all pop fans. The band themselves label it "stoner pop" or "sludge pop".

I cant find any pics of the deluxe versions of Earth or Colour Haze. Which is a shame as they're really nice.

The Colour Haze gatefold was a sleeve like a hard backed book, inside it was like a photo book. Really really nice. I don't have a cam or I would take photos. Same with the Earth vinyl.

Each album they have released has been, to me, a cause of celebration. But this one is a revelation—never before have they ever packed so much range into an album, and such a superb blend of studio precision and free flowing abandon. This album adds even more psychedelia (was that possible?) to the mix, along with the most effective set of shorter songs they’ve ever released."

EARTH - "THE BEES MADE HONEY IN THE LION'S SKULL"sunn90 CD&2XLPEarth's latest incarnation will be available FEBRUARY 2008. After refaceting some old gems for greater illumination on "Hibernaculum". The band returns once again to it's continuing evolution. Where "Hex" reveled in dark satanic twang and austere american beauty, "The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull" finds Dylan Carlson and the band growing into a harder, more rock, american Gospel and impovisitory direction framed by truly psychedelic production and blazing guitar sounds.Earth shows it's affinity with a nod to the best elements of the more adventurous San Francisco bands of the late 60's and 70's, and the more spiritually aware and exciting forms of Jazz-Rock from the same era. This is no nostalgia trip but a thoroughly inspired and original metamorphosis. Earth is also very honored to be joined on this record for three songs by legendary and virtuoso guitarist BILL FRISELL (doing some of his most fuzzed out playing in years!) .Bill Frisell adds a brilliant texture and counterpoint to the scintillating and inspired riffs of Dylan Carlson and the band. Adrienne Davies joins again on drums lending a classic and steady feel to the proceedings. Steve Moore also returns adding heavy hammond organ and his intense jazz inspired piano playing. Live Bassist Don McGreevy also makes his full length Earth debut on this record.Earth will begin touring throughout the world when the album is released, Australia, Europe and a full US campaign and on from there. The new songs are equally compelling live where EARTH takes the vehicles and expand and explore them for further musical and meditative exploration. I had no idea Frisell played on an Earth album TBH. Will get for certain.
Everything I have downloaded so far is really good. Why did I never hear Caina before? And Torche indeed seems as good as "Foo Fighters in Southern Lord jeans" made them sound. (Actually, they remind me of Sunny Day Real Estate at times.)
(Had Opeth and Meshuggah before, liked both but thought both bands had done better, as my question upthread might have suggested.)

So... I am going to hopefully find/listen to one of these a week. My plan:
Today, after the football (am currently listening to the Marnie Stern, but that doesn't count): Genghis Tron - Board Up the House (Relapse)
Tomorrow: Gojira - The Way of All Flesh (Listenable Records)
Tuesday: Boris - Smile (Diwphalanx Records/Southern Lord)
Wednesday: Earth - The Bees Made Honey in the Lion’s Skull (Southern Lord)
Thursday: Wetnurse - Invisible City (Seventh Rule Recordings)
Friday: Jesu - Why Are We Not Perfect
Saturday: (the no. 1 album) Torche - Meanderthal (Hydrahead (CD)/Robotic Empire(LP/Pic Disk)
Sunday: Harvey Milk - Life…the Best Game in Town (Hydra Head)
Also, I asked on autogoon about the rap list and i dunno...

OK, one more stats thing. After a little more experimenting, I've come up with a way to calculate Kvltosis (a statistical measure of cultishness) from the poll data itself, basically by retabulating it with votes inversely weighted by voter-centricity. That is, the farther from the consensus a voter was, the more cultishness their votes represent. So here's the ranking of albums that got 3 or more votes, by cultishness.
1 - 0.683 - 54 - 3 - Trinacria - Travel Now Journey Infinitely2 - 0.582 - 54 - 3 - Graveyard - Graveyard3 - 0.526 - 42 - 4 - Blood Ceremony - Blood Ceremony4 - 0.501 - 26 - 6 - Moonspell - Night Eternal5 - 0.497 - 26 - 6 - Intronaut - Prehistoricisms6 - 0.492 - 54 - 3 - Dir En Grey - Uroboros7 - 0.468 - 54 - 3 - Deathspell Omega - Veritas Diaboli Manet in Aeternum8 - 0.449 - 35 - 5 - Eluveitie - Slania9 - 0.446 - 42 - 4 - The Sword - Gods of the Earth10 - 0.439 - 35 - 5 - Jex Thoth - Jex Thoth10 - 0.439 - 42 - 4 - Metallica - Death Magnetic12 - 0.429 - 54 - 3 - Gnaw Their Tongues - An Epiphanic Vomiting of Blood13 - 0.421 - 54 - 3 - Journey To Ixtlan - S/t14 - 0.417 - 35 - 5 - Darkspace - III15 - 0.413 - 42 - 4 - Tyr - Land16 - 0.41 - 26 - 6 - Moss - Sub Templum17 - 0.408 - 5 - 13 - Opeth - Watershed18 - 0.407 - 54 - 3 - Hammers of Misfortune - Fields/Church of Broken Glass19 - 0.404 - 24 - 7 - Earthless - Live at Roadburn20 - 0.398 - 26 - 6 - Ascend - Ample Fire Within21 - 0.397 - 15 - 8 - Cynic - Traced in Air22 - 0.382 - 54 - 3 - Racebannon - Acid or Blood22 - 0.382 - 26 - 6 - Unearthly Trance - Electrocution24 - 0.381 - 15 - 8 - Leviathan - Massive Conspiracy Against All Life24 - 0.381 - 15 - 8 - Sunn 0))) - Domkirke26 - 0.38 - 54 - 3 - Death Angel - Killing Season26 - 0.38 - 26 - 6 - Jesu - Why Are We Not Perfect28 - 0.379 - 15 - 8 - Asva - What You Don't Know Is Frontier29 - 0.374 - 14 - 9 - Enslaved - Vertebrae30 - 0.372 - 54 - 3 - Morkobot - Morto31 - 0.368 - 54 - 3 - Kayo Dot - Blue Lambency Downward32 - 0.366 - 9 - 10 - Esoteric - The Maniacal Vale32 - 0.366 - 42 - 4 - Nadja - Desire In Uneasiness32 - 0.366 - 35 - 5 - Wetnurse - Invisible City35 - 0.363 - 26 - 6 - The Gates of Slumber - Conqueror36 - 0.358 - 42 - 4 - US Christmas - Eat the Low Dogs37 - 0.354 - 42 - 4 - Amen Ra - Mass IIII38 - 0.352 - 24 - 7 - Grails - Doomsdayer's Holiday39 - 0.351 - 9 - 10 - Meshuggah - obZen40 - 0.347 - 15 - 8 - Amon Amarth - Twilight of the Thunder God41 - 0.341 - 15 - 8 - Coffins - Buried Death41 - 0.341 - 9 - 10 - Gojira - The Way of All Flesh43 - 0.34 - 1 - 25 - Torche - Meanderthal44 - 0.337 - 4 - 16 - Boris - Smile44 - 0.337 - 54 - 3 - Cough - Sigillum Luciferi46 - 0.336 - 7 - 11 - Nachtmystium - Assassins: Black Meddle Part 146 - 0.336 - 42 - 4 - Withered - Folie Circulaire48 - 0.329 - 35 - 5 - Bison B.C. - Quiet Earth49 - 0.328 - 6 - 12 - 5ive - Hesperus49 - 0.328 - 42 - 4 - Marnie Stern - This Is It And I Am It And You Are It51 - 0.326 - 35 - 5 - The Gutter Twins - Saturnalia52 - 0.325 - 54 - 3 - Trees - Lights Bane53 - 0.323 - 54 - 3 - Cult of Luna - Eternal Kingdom54 - 0.322 - 9 - 10 - Melvins - Nude With Boots55 - 0.319 - 35 - 5 - Witch - Paralyzed56 - 0.316 - 54 - 3 - Have A Nice Life - Deathconsciousness56 - 0.316 - 15 - 8 - Krallice - Krallice58 - 0.315 - 54 - 3 - Zebulon Pike - Intransience59 - 0.314 - 54 - 3 - Helms Alee - Night Terror60 - 0.312 - 2 - 19 - Earth - The Bees Made Honey...61 - 0.311 - 7 - 11 - The Goslings - Occasion62 - 0.31 - 54 - 3 - Jarboe - Mahakali62 - 0.31 - 15 - 8 - UFOmammut - Idolum64 - 0.309 - 26 - 6 - Ocean - Pantheon of the Lesser65 - 0.306 - 54 - 3 - Ocrilim - Annwn66 - 0.304 - 54 - 3 - Lair of the Minotaur - War Metal Battle Master66 - 0.304 - 9 - 10 - Made Out of Babies - The Ruiner68 - 0.303 - 15 - 8 - Caina - Temporary Antennae69 - 0.299 - 2 - 19 - Harvey Milk - Life...the Best Game in Town70 - 0.296 - 26 - 6 - Genghis Tron - Board Up the House71 - 0.294 - 42 - 4 - Disfear - Live the Storm72 - 0.287 - 42 - 4 - Blue Sabbath Black Cheer - Untitled73 - 0.28 - 42 - 4 - Motorhead - Motorizer

Maybe Glenn can run some stats comparing, but I'd assume the Decibel list was closest to ours.

rolling autogoon seems to nay say the idea, and given a bit of thought, I don't think it would be worth it this late, after so many lists, and people are warn out on 2008 lists etc.. Next year I will though.
Just check out that ABN record and the Guilty Simpson and you're set, really.

well they still said they would contribute a list, and im sure those who dont post on that thread would contribute too. That's what happened with this poll, a lot of the contributors werent rolling metal thread posters. Some were lurkers who i dont know on ilx. So this kind of email poll does get a decent turn out. 30 was more than I expected. A rap poll would get a lot more i reckon. You should give it a go, it will help get people discovering stuff they wouldnt always know about. As far as I can see only a few of the usual suspects will get in the ilx poll if P&J is anything to go by.I'd say have a go doing a rap poll!

Ok, fuck it. Tomorrow I'll start it up.

Metal Edge has 29 things that are in our top 100. Decibel and Terrorizer each have 25. Kerrang has 5.

Interesting. Metal Edge has really changed since Phil took over as editor then. (As I said before Metal Edge isn't available in Smiths anymore despite it always having been until a year or so ago).
Not surprised at the lack of Kerrang stuff.
What about the top 50? How many are in that?
― the worst poster on ilx fwiw (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 26 January 2009 19:55 (fifteen years ago) link
Metal Edge has 29 things in common because nearly all the writers for that magazine post here.

Well, Phil didn't vote as he said he forgot, I know you write for it but who else? (and don't you all write for Decibel too?) I only know of one Terrorizer writer here (who voted). Does Stevie Chick still write for Kerrang? (not that he voted as far as i'm aware)

Metal Edge, Decibel and Terrorizer each have a 21-allbum overlap with this poll's top 50. Terrorizer overlaps 15 with this poll's top 25, the other two 14.

thanks for that Glenn!! Very interesting.Going to give this Cynic album a spin, it's on spotify. Quite handy! If you're on spotify then check out the albums from our poll that are on it(not licensed to usa/canada yet im afraid)

Which ones are on it (if you already know it saves me doing 100 searches)?
― onimo, Monday, 26 January 2009 21:34 (fifteen years ago) link
I haven't looked. I just remembered Ned, I think it was saying, Cynic were a bit proggy. I'm surprised tho, no death metal at all. It's definitely prog metal with clean singing. Not what I expected at all.

Cheers, just found it, I'll give that a quick listen then see what else I can find. I did search for the other day and found a few of the artists but it was mostly older material.
