how about we start a new thread: "name every weird/obscure vancouver band you can" so we can leave this one with what we all know is the correct answer - loverboy.
er, skinny puppy.

dyson (dyson), Sunday, 22 February 2004 05:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I was kind of hoping that someone would mention a slew of bands that had escaped my memory. But I think the winner is: Loverboy, er skinny puppy. I'm surprised there was no mention of Sarah MacLaughlin or Bryan Adams, although neither of them are bands, or any good...ok I like a couple of Sarah MacLaughlin songs. And I've met her -- she's quite nice.
Jimi Hendrix's grandmother lived in Vancouver (gastown neighbourhood) -- she should have started a band. I'm sure they would have been better than Loverboy.

Jaromil (Jaromil), Sunday, 22 February 2004 05:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd vote for Moral Lepers or Young Canadians.

jazz odysseus, Sunday, 22 February 2004 06:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Aren't Loverboy from Toronto?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Sunday, 22 February 2004 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Loverboy formed in Toronto. I don't know if they bothered sticking around there though.

maypang (maypang), Sunday, 22 February 2004 06:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i cannot confirm where loverboy be from, myself.
i do know, since jaromil brought up grandmothers, that kid koala's granny lives in vanny. she makes lovely cookies.

dyson (dyson), Sunday, 22 February 2004 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

dyson (dyson), Sunday, 22 February 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Pork Queen!
(I think they were from Vancouver)

Are you thinking of Vancouver punk supergroup Victorian Pork? I used to be good buddies with the singer in the new father/daughter version of this band.

Sym (shmuel), Monday, 23 February 2004 08:26 (twenty-two years ago)

No no, Pork Queen is one of the guys from Good Horsey doing really noisy music... releases on Scratch and Shrimper.

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 23 February 2004 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Good Horsey!
Carpozzi Park!
Mark!

(Pork Queen was another member of Good Horsey other than Mark -- solo noise thang)

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 23 February 2004 09:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Wandering Lucy. "Leap Year" is an amazing CD. Too bad they dropped off the planet afterward.

mike a, Monday, 23 February 2004 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

And let's not forget the Langley Schools Music Project. Langley is a nearby Vancouver 'burb, and Hans commuted to work from Vanc.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 23 February 2004 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Not "greatest of all time," but: Cub.

mike a, Monday, 23 February 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

DOUG AND THE MOTHERFUCKIN SLUGZ

dean! (deangulberry), Monday, 23 February 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Not "greatest of all time," but: Cub.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 23 February 2004 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

subhumans, modernettes, slow

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Monday, 23 February 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Mecca Normal are probably someone's favorite Vancouver band.

mike a, Monday, 23 February 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

cub, dear god¡ they made me want to vomit sugar.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 23 February 2004 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna third superconductor.

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll be the first to say Zumpano.

derrick (derrick), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

ANIMAL SLAVES!

etta, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 01:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Lemme put in another vote for Slow here.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

She Stole My Beer.

bh, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 08:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Neil Osborne from 54 40 looks like Ryan Adams.

I think that, at one point, I was the only person putting my ass on the line for Nelly Furtado on the internet. I'm glad I did, because she kills everyone else on this thread (apols if she isn't officially from Vancouver - I don't do research on principle)

Le Coq, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 08:35 (twenty-two years ago)

she isn't.
I second: http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/pic200_web/drp000/p069/p06925cwcti.jpg

but only if I can't have Loverboy.

And that AMG list is wrong about Kid Koala. I mean he grew up in Vancouver, but his career began in Mtl. I mean really.

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Nelly Furtado is from Victoria. Don't ask me how I know that; I'm not sure myself.

mike a, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Chilliwack ("My Girl" - "a-gone gone gone, she been gone so long...") from BC? I know the city of Chilliwack is near Vancouver.

mike a, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

You can get to Langley by Skytrain, but not Chilliwack. Not that you'd want to go to either.

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

You people are sick. Doug and the Slugs need to be chopped up and turned into fertilizer.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 16:48 (twenty-two years ago)

"Too bad"

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

the other day I came THIS CLOSE to buying a D & Slugs greatest hits CD, and then I thought better, prefering to keep them a good MEMORY and not a bad EXPERIENCE.

My Huckleberry Friend (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a doug & the slugs greateset hits cd? that is somehow both sad and exhilarating. i always knew vancouver was creepy...that's why i left. another vote for animal slaves...not the most well-known, but fresh at the time and still worthy.

thea b, Tuesday, 24 February 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Doug & the Slugs vs Barney Bentall FITE
(maybe they should've taken a tip from Martha and renamed themselves D+S)

dave q, Thursday, 26 February 2004 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread has reminded me why I don't want to move to Vancouver.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 26 February 2004 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a copy of Joey Keithley's autobiography in the mail and have been reading it -- Vancouver does sound strange.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 February 2004 17:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Hallo, Ned! Please elaborate...as it happens, I am from there but have no particular interest in defending it.

Thea, Thursday, 26 February 2004 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder how many ilxrs have gnawed their nails to the quick while waiting for Ned to respond to the thread.

Thea, Thursday, 26 February 2004 18:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I am now working on digit number four of my right hand.

Thea, Thursday, 26 February 2004 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

The Carl Newman trilogy of Superconductor, Zumpano, and New Pornographers for me.

Ben Boyer (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 26 February 2004 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

What, where? No hand eating plz. It's obviously more a portrayal of the Vancouver then than of the now, but still it was strange and the bikers were stranger.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 February 2004 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just making the joke you've likely heard many times before that people always wait to see what Ned says and if all they get is , they worry.

Thea, Thursday, 26 February 2004 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Octatractor. Hey Darren, plz Google this! What've you been up to?

dave q, Saturday, 28 February 2004 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

three years pass...

Point of order - the Evaporators and the Smugglers are from North Vancouver which, although it sounds like the northern part of the City of Vancouver is actually a different city entirely and lies across a large inlet. Langley is over an hour drive from Vancouver's city limits so claiming the Langley Schools Project as being from Vancouver would be like saying the Beatles are from Blackpool. Chilliwack is even further away but that's okay since the band Chilliwack are from Vancouver.

I'm not too up on most of the Vancouver bands these days, except for the ones everyone knows, but you can't go wrong with Stinkmitt, They Shoot Horses (Don't They) and yeah, July 4th Toilet. But I think there's a band like them in every city isn't there?

everything, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

p:ano.

libcrypt, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

I'm thinking they have disappeared into the black hole of side projects. There's quite a bit of that kinda low-key chamber pop around these days. Mostly I don't really like it because it's so reverential and staid. Those P:ano people were all right though.

Sons of Freedom!

2for25, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

Oh yeah, I just remembered Fond Of Tigers is a great band doing improvised sounding math-rock or whatever. Sorry, I'm useless at describing this stuff - let's just say they make a great racket.

Is it too late to vote for the Poppy Family?

Saxby D. Elder, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:18 (eighteen years ago)

This band Winning are from Vancouver, I think. They seem neato. myspace.com/winningmusic

DJ Mencap, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

CANNED HAMM

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

Canned Hamm is an acceptable answer. If they keep going, they could probably have a brilliant "best of" cd in about 10 years 'cos all 3 albums have a fair few gems. Live they are patchy and dependent on the venue and audience. It's either awesome or excrutiating. Either way they win. Both members are in July 4th Toilet of course.

The Poppy Family are from up Gibsons way I think, which is a couple of hours journey from Vancouver, including a 45 minute ferry ride. The last time I was there I actually found a Poppy Family single in a junk store for one dollar only - signed by Susan and Terry Jacks. No joke.

everything, Thursday, 12 July 2007 00:36 (eighteen years ago)

WOW!!! awesome find!!

I thought Terry Jacks moved from Manitoba to Vancouver, started the Chessmen and then stuck around for the Poppy family as well.

I keep meaning to watch this Poppy Family DVD I got, maybe that will have all the details... Keep you posted...

Japandroids!

caulk the wagon and float it, Friday, 27 April 2012 18:16 (fourteen years ago)

There are so many bands in Vancouver right now but FWIW the best band is a young (I think they are all 20 years old) guitar-pop group called Thee Ahs, who are so head-and-shoulders above their peers it's insane. They are not particularly groundbreaking musically but they are very cool and fun, have dozens of great songs, and owing to gigging continually for the last two or three years are really tight. They are going on their first cross-Canadian tour in June to promote their second album.

Also, this band Aunts & Uncles are really great.
