i hear this band on mersh alt-rock radio SO much more than their chart peaks would indicate. it took me forever to realize they had 2 different popular singles because it all sounds the same to me.

listening to this on NPR now: http://www.npr.org/2012/07/15/156545328/first-listen-passion-pit-gossamer?ps=mh_fl

I already liked "Take A Walk"

"I'll Be Alright" okay did someone accidentally record Telefon Tel Aviv's "Stay Away From Being Maybe" on 45 over the beginning of this?

PITILESS LIVE SHOW (DJP), Friday, 20 July 2012 19:39 (eleven years ago) link

I have never heard a note of Passion Pit but I read that Pitchfork piece and am sorry to hear that guy has mental problems.

"Carried Away" ugh okay this is nowhere near as appealing to me as Manners so far, I would prefer it if dude went back to his screechy falsetto as that might make this song something beyond a cloying ball of nothing

PITILESS LIVE SHOW (DJP), Friday, 20 July 2012 19:43 (eleven years ago) link

"Constant Conversations"/"Mirrored Sea" I am not liveblogging the rest of this, just assume I'm sitting in front of my computer pouting and wishing I was listening to Manners instead

i'm at carried away now :(

they're stupid like i told ya (Hunt3r), Friday, 20 July 2012 20:05 (eleven years ago) link

I would like to find whomever it was who told this dude "you should be more like Owl City" and hurt that person, preferably in the neck

PITILESS LIVE SHOW (DJP), Friday, 20 July 2012 20:07 (eleven years ago) link

OMG i just described this as owl city to my coworker!

I hear lots of sonic similarities to the Jonsi solo album.

I don't know, I liked it OK. Didn't love it. And I listened to a few songs of 'Manners' and decided I didn't need to hear more.

Wasn't expecting to like this so much---I assumed Manners tapped them for everything they had---but this new album is great. That closing minute of the final track has floored me every time I hear it.

Evan R, Tuesday, 24 July 2012 04:11 (eleven years ago) link

Maybe I should try again but I loved Manners on first listen; this new one is just too... precious for me.

The thing I liked so much about Manners was the juxtaposition of sleekness with rough, particularly in the interplay between vocals and backing music but also in how the backing music was constructed (all those buzzy synths especially); Gossamer is a little too on-the-nose wrt its title and, as a result, DO NOT WANT

four months pass...

I can't believe they command 40$ for their concert. I've seen Wilco at the same venue for less than that.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 17 December 2012 19:08 (eleven years ago) link

I can't believe people like their new album

Jesus, the Total Douchebag (DJP), Monday, 17 December 2012 19:27 (eleven years ago) link

i like "Take A Walk" more than the earlier singles because of the absence of shrill screeching

some dude, Monday, 17 December 2012 19:29 (eleven years ago) link

yeah but everything else on the album is horrible and cloying

Jesus, the Total Douchebag (DJP), Monday, 17 December 2012 19:31 (eleven years ago) link

new album has some jams & when i saw them at lolla they were a huge deal

salute me or crut me (J0rdan S.), Monday, 17 December 2012 19:33 (eleven years ago) link

Owl City was a huge deal for a while too, that doesn't mean I have to like him

Jesus, the Total Douchebag (DJP), Monday, 17 December 2012 19:35 (eleven years ago) link

i was addressing the poster who seem shocked that passion pit was commanding $40 ticket prices

salute me or crut me (J0rdan S.), Monday, 17 December 2012 19:36 (eleven years ago) link

oh haha fair enough

Jesus, the Total Douchebag (DJP), Monday, 17 December 2012 19:36 (eleven years ago) link

imagine paying $40 for Owl City *shutters*

Jesus, the Total Douchebag (DJP), Monday, 17 December 2012 19:37 (eleven years ago) link

i def wouldn't argue with someone calling them cloying but i'm not sure they would either

salute me or crut me (J0rdan S.), Monday, 17 December 2012 19:37 (eleven years ago) link

that said i don't know anyone who's ever seen wilco for less than $40 but i'm young

salute me or crut me (J0rdan S.), Monday, 17 December 2012 19:38 (eleven years ago) link

in the glory days i saw wilco at a bar for free, man you should have been there, all you had to do was answer 2 jayhawks trivia questions and they let you in

Owl City, he's far beyond amazing. His music is beautiful, meaningful, different and pure. Adam Young is perfect, so is his music.

They really were a huge deal at Lolla. I was camped out at that stage for Sabbath after them, and was pretty blown away by how popular they were. They sounded terrible from where I was sitting though, awful and screeching.

HAPPY BDAY TOOTS (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 17 December 2012 19:58 (eleven years ago) link

They are hugely popular with the 16/24 years old audience. Not that it is problem, just something I noticed.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 17 December 2012 20:03 (eleven years ago) link

huh

is this how alomst-40-year-olds in 1991 felt when I would drive by them blasting Machines of Loving Grace?

Jesus, the Total Douchebag (DJP), Monday, 17 December 2012 20:08 (eleven years ago) link

idk but now i sure know how it feels when an almost 40 years old mention machines of loving grace and 1991 on the internet to me.

No opinions on Kindred? I miss the overloaded arrangements, and especially Nico Muhly, but there is some good stuff on it. Especially love the arrangement of Whole Life Story.

“sleepyhead” is something else, I mean what kind of music is this even? I get Avalanches vibes from it.
