I remember in high school sitting around with dudes trying to figure out who did the female vocal hook and eventually we all agreed it was Lady Miss Kier.

the funny thing about the Shadrach hook is that it makes more sense in the context of the Beasties (3 MCs on the go! okay!) than it does in the Sly song the sample is from, where it's just nonsensical

Sorta related story: My mother-in-law once told me that as a kid, she thought the priest was telling them about two guys, one of whom was black: Shadrach and Meshach, a big negro. I can't hear the song anymore without thinking of that story.

i heard the beastie boys track first, but love them both. the fact of "loose booty" doesn't take anything away from "shadrach", afaic.

― Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 23:21 (twelve years ago) link
yeah, i love CYH, but don't much care for "pass the mic". do like the delivery of certain lines though:
i'm like jimmy walker, i'm dynomite!
a lot of people get jealous, they're talking about mebut that's just cuz they haven't got a thing to say
M-I-K-E to the Dyou come to see me and you pay a feedo what i do, professionallyto tell the truth i am exactly what i want to be
but for now i'd like to ask you howyou like the feel of the BASS in your FACE in the CROWD

EVERYBODY'S RAPPIN LIKE IT'S A COMMERCIAL ACTIN LIKE LIFE IS A BIG COMMERCIAL
During my first summer job in '92 our black manager and hip-hop aficionado used to cite those lines, rolling his eyes, as what was wrong with the album.
It's not a favorite but it's awesome they're confident enough to use the same rhyme.
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 23:43 (twelve years ago) link
there are a bunch of lazy rhymes in that song, a few gems
really the funniest thing about it is Ad-Rock spelling out his name in the video
― Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 23:47 (twelve years ago) link
i almost want to say that's it's a knowing collection of lazy, familiar rhymes, but it's not quite ott enough to really convince on that level

what the fuck are you people talking about? this song is great! I ranked it #3, but would have put it at two if not for one of my token License to Ill tracks. I mean, with that flute sample and the bad brains sample in the intro and the way that MCA just busts out of the gate there? If you can feel what I'm feeling, etc... This song is so vital; it breathes like the wallpaper breathes when you take acid. I honestly don't give a fuck if you don't think the raps are good.
If you think that you're slick you'll catch a brick y'all.

coulda done a whole Native Tongues REKKID together
Beastie Boys weren’t the white group in Native Tongues (or “in”)
Adrock did propose forming a supergroup called Nasal Tongues with him, Tip and B-Real though
I should have voted for this. Would have if it were busted down into its component parts. HATE the thing about thrwing the mattress in her face.
Voted Sounds high but would have voted A Year And A Day higher
You didn’t know that was the line? You fail at rapness, son.
in case anyone doesn’t know, here’s why it’s especially funny to boast about a decade later:
http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/tt78/ucallthatlove/KoolMoeDeereportcard.jpg
They weren’t confident – Mike D fucked up his take and repeated the rhyme by mistake, but didn’t notice; the others didn’t tell him because they wanted to see how long it would take him to realise.

Word. Pass the Mic was a defining moment for them in my experience - them doing exactly what they did best. It was the highlight of the set when I saw them. Tagging in and swapping rhymes like a three man weave drill. When they got to feelin the bass in your face in the crowd, everyone' went nuts.
