some dude, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 19:58 (twelve years ago) link

but back on Get It Together I love Q-Tip cracks up & starts laughing, it's so great

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 19:58 (twelve years ago) link

and now back to Paul Revere

raaaaaaaaaaaagh

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 19:58 (twelve years ago) link

can live with "paul revere" outside the top 10. it's great, but not one of my 10 favorite beastie boys tracks, so...

so...

I see what you did there.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 20:01 (twelve years ago) link

if we end up with some To The 5 Boroughs ish in the top 10 I will stab someone

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 20:04 (twelve years ago) link

wtf Paul Revere should totally be top 10. I had it at #3

11. "B-BOY BOUILLABAISSE" (1989) [561 points, 22 votes, 3 first place votes]

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 20:14 (twelve years ago) link

i think at this point it's pretty certain that the entire top 50 is devoid of any 21st century tracks

some dude, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 20:16 (twelve years ago) link

I had no idea what to do with Bouillabaisse, it's so unlike anything else. Love some bits, other bits are just okay. Ended up with it at #6.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 20:16 (twelve years ago) link

Actually I'm perfectly fine with the overplayed LTI tracks sliding out of the top ten, it would have been boring and predictable if it was just a parade of those tracks at the end of the poll.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 20:17 (twelve years ago) link

my number 1. the Boys' prog epic.

Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 20:17 (twelve years ago) link

A Year And A Day was always my favourite, all beautiful and manic at once.

Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 20:17 (twelve years ago) link

I should have voted for this. Would have if it were busted down into its component parts. HATE the thing about thrwing the mattress in her face.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 20:43 (twelve years ago) link

I think this poll's starting to PEAK now, Al.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 20:53 (twelve years ago) link

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 20:56 (twelve years ago) link

i thought 'brass monkey' was crazy low but wtf at 'paul revere' not making top ten. good lord.

balls, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:16 (twelve years ago) link

lol I feel like we already covered shadrach in great detail

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:17 (twelve years ago) link

Had no idea what the hell they were saying other than "Shadrach", i.e., "Meshach and Abednago" always tranlsated as nonsense to me (I had never seen the lyrics until the voting/campaigning thread). Made it really difficult to sing along to this song, but as it is so infectious I sure tried anyway.

grandavis, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:22 (twelve years ago) link

the Book of Daniel?

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:26 (twelve years ago) link

some monotheist you are, grandavis!

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:31 (twelve years ago) link

have never really understood what the Book of Daniel has to do with loose booty

Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:32 (twelve years ago) link

it has everything to do with fly rhymes.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:34 (twelve years ago) link

:D

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:37 (twelve years ago) link

I remember in high school sitting around with dudes trying to figure out who did the female vocal hook and eventually we all agreed it was Lady Miss Kier.

9. "THE SOUNDS OF SCIENCE" (1989) [585 points, 24 votes, 2 first place votes]

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:40 (twelve years ago) link

Hah, yeah, and I even had to go to Sunday school as a kid. Needless to say it did not ring a bell. Hated Sunday school.

grandavis, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:40 (twelve years ago) link

voted for it on the basis of KA-KNOWLEDGE

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:40 (twelve years ago) link

^^^
YES, that bit rules

pandemic, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:44 (twelve years ago) link

the funny thing about the Shadrach hook is that it makes more sense in the context of the Beasties (3 MCs on the go! okay!) than it does in the Sly song the sample is from, where it's just nonsensical

Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 21:44 (twelve years ago) link

Shea Stadium, The radium

8. "PASS THE MIC" (1992) [614 points, 24 votes, 2 first place votes]

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 22:01 (twelve years ago) link

Sorta related story: My mother-in-law once told me that as a kid, she thought the priest was telling them about two guys, one of whom was black: Shadrach and Meshach, a big negro. I can't hear the song anymore without thinking of that story.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 22:19 (twelve years ago) link

Agreed but personally, I've never been able to get with this bc it feels like little more the Sly song being rapped over.

...and I heard the Sly track first somehow.

Naive Teen Idol, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 22:26 (twelve years ago) link

got an A from kool moe dee for STICKIN to THEMES

i never knew this was the line. thats fucking unbelievably great

thommys got bendz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 22:27 (twelve years ago) link

i heard the beastie boys track first, but love them both. the fact of "loose booty" doesn't take anything away from "shadrach", afaic.

It took me ages to realise that Sounds of Science was actually When I'm Sixty Four. Genius.

Scary Move 4 (dog latin), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 22:48 (twelve years ago) link

well there's Black Oak Arkansas in there too y'know

Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 22:52 (twelve years ago) link

How the fuck is this noise above Paul Revere WTF x 1 million

I mean it's not bad or anything but for serious?

do dat do dat do do dat dat dat (thewufs), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 23:13 (twelve years ago) link

yeah Pass the Mic is one of their weaker singles imho

Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 23:21 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, i love CYH, but don't much care for "pass the mic". do like the delivery of certain lines though:

i'm like jimmy walker, i'm dynomite!

a lot of people get jealous, they're talking about me
but that's just cuz they haven't got a thing to say

M-I-K-E to the D
you come to see me and you pay a fee
do what i do, professionally
to tell the truth i am exactly what i want to be

but for now i'd like to ask you how
you like the feel of the BASS in your FACE in the CROWD

EVERYBODY'S RAPPIN LIKE IT'S A COMMERCIAL
ACTIN LIKE LIFE IS A BIG COMMERCIAL

During my first summer job in '92 our black manager and hip-hop aficionado used to cite those lines, rolling his eyes, as what was wrong with the album.

It's not a favorite but it's awesome they're confident enough to use the same rhyme.

Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 23:43 (twelve years ago) link

there are a bunch of lazy rhymes in that song, a few gems

really the funniest thing about it is Ad-Rock spelling out his name in the video

Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 23:47 (twelve years ago) link

i almost want to say that's it's a knowing collection of lazy, familiar rhymes, but it's not quite ott enough to really convince on that level

what the fuck are you people talking about? this song is great! I ranked it #3, but would have put it at two if not for one of my token License to Ill tracks. I mean, with that flute sample and the bad brains sample in the intro and the way that MCA just busts out of the gate there? If you can feel what I'm feeling, etc... This song is so vital; it breathes like the wallpaper breathes when you take acid. I honestly don't give a fuck if you don't think the raps are good.

If you think that you're slick you'll catch a brick y'all.

coulda done a whole Native Tongues REKKID together

Beastie Boys weren’t the white group in Native Tongues (or “in”)

Adrock did propose forming a supergroup called Nasal Tongues with him, Tip and B-Real though

I should have voted for this. Would have if it were busted down into its component parts. HATE the thing about thrwing the mattress in her face.

Voted Sounds high but would have voted A Year And A Day higher

i never knew this was the line. thats fucking unbelievably great

You didn’t know that was the line? You fail at rapness, son.

in case anyone doesn’t know, here’s why it’s especially funny to boast about a decade later:

http://i599.photobucket.com/albums/tt78/ucallthatlove/KoolMoeDeereportcard.jpg

It's not a favorite but it's awesome they're confident enough to use the same rhyme.

They weren’t confident – Mike D fucked up his take and repeated the rhyme by mistake, but didn’t notice; the others didn’t tell him because they wanted to see how long it would take him to realise.
