I didn't vote for it either. I was making a point, but I've already forgotten what it was.

Hold It Now is great. In my top 10.

it is great, don't get me wrong. if was gonna vote for 10 songs off LTI, it would totally be #8.

I could've happily put all of LTI on my ballot

"Hold It Now, Hit It" is my second favorite LTI track.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:41 (twelve years ago) link

what's your favorite?

"Rhymin' And Stealin'"

nice

I didn't vote for Hold It, tho I get the appeal. Paul Revere placed the highest from LTI for me

Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:44 (twelve years ago) link

Rhymin has to be in my top 5 of all-time awesome album openers --- and one of my LTI faves

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:44 (twelve years ago) link

I'd heard "Fight For Your Right" but when I got the album and the Levee drums kicked in I was all WHOA.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 22:49 (twelve years ago) link

Kicks like a mule. Gets me every time.

I actually like Fight for Your Right more now than I did when it came out, but I really didn't like it when it came out. Took me hearing more of the album to decide they weren't no-talent jerks.

"Brass Monkey" otoh was in my top 5. On the soundtrack to countless college parties.

I had Paul Revere & Fight in my top 10 and No Sleep & Rhymin in the bottom 10. Cut the New Style and She's Crafty at the last minute, so depressing

Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 15 May 2012 23:00 (twelve years ago) link

my top 5 were from LTI tbh

I wouldn't give up on seeing "hold it, now hit it"

"fight for yr right" was not one of my favorite tracks on LTI, it was OK but seemed like a "she's on it" retread and, compared to the other stuff on the album, was punching below their weight. then the single hit and it became really annoying really quickly. at this point I don't hate it and get the cultural significance but also never need to hear it again.

Perhaps. I prefer to view it as a refinement of a previously attempted style.

I mean, "Fight For Your Right" and "Girls" are barely rap songs, which is why they rank so low for me. Even alt-rock stuff like "Sabotage" and "Gratitude" have more rapping on them!

thommys got bendz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 03:32 (twelve years ago) link

"Hold It" and "New Style" were probably the purest "of-their-era" rap songs in the entire Beasties discography, which is why its probably been sampled the most by rappers!

thommys got bendz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 03:34 (twelve years ago) link

my appreciation of "fight for your right" has nothing to do with how rap it is or isn't. i just like it.

but that's me. don't suppose there's anything wrong with rapness rankings.

I feel like Sabotage and Gratitude have equally as much rap as FFYR, but get the rock thing so much more correct.

I'll get this out of the way before JF gets back to his countdown...So "I just like it" is okay, but "I just heard it too often" is cause for the third degree; and "don't suppose there's anything wrong with rapness rankings," but there is something wrong with basing your list on what you happen to like best when you make up the list? Just trying to get this straight.

clemenza, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 10:20 (twelve years ago) link

FFYRTP was on my list, but relatively low. I was 7 when it came out. I'm not really fussed by LTI much at all. PB through HN are "my" Beastie Boys, and that's cool with me.

Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 10:31 (twelve years ago) link

rapness

read this as rapanese

how's life, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 10:32 (twelve years ago) link

I didn't vote for 'FFYR' but that's only because there are 20+ other BBs songs I prefer - I still think it's great. Think I mentioned in the voting thread but 'Intergalactic' is the only one of theirs I actually got sick of - I loved it when it first came out but I just heard it so many times in crap bars/rock clubs and it wore thin in a way that their other big songs didn't. It's not like I think this means it was actually a crap song all along but my ballot was based on what I like *now* and right now it'd be nowhere near my top 20.

Gavin, Leeds, Wednesday, 16 May 2012 11:02 (twelve years ago) link

Dug out the Sounds of Science anthology and the sleevenotes are great - each song gets discussed by one member.

Yauch on Fight For Your Right: "It was a joke that went too far… So I guess that the story could have a couple of possible morals. One might be, 'Be careful of what you make fun of or you might become it.'"

Yauch on Song for the Man: "Listening to the lyrics of this song, one might say that the Beastie Boy 'Fight for Your Right to Party' guy is a hypocrite. Well, maybe; but in this fucked up world all you can hope for is change, and I'd rather be a hypocrite to you than a zombie forever."

Get wolves (DL), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 11:13 (twelve years ago) link

(xpost) Same here. Sorry for even bringing it up again--yesterday's detour around "Fight for Your Right" just struck me as really strange. But I know the Top 20 is today, so I won't mention the matter again. Final irony: I actually almost voted for "Fight for Your Right" (on a very abbreviated ballot), but instead went with a couple of the other metallish songs on Licensed, both of which still hit me full-force when relistened to some stuff (trying to figure out what I could and couldn't play for my students when I discussed MCA's death).

if you don't think Sabotage has more actual rap than FFYR, then I don't know what

diamanda ram dass (Edward III), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 14:46 (twelve years ago) link

not to be all "old deej" about it too, but before "FFYR" and "No Sleep" were all over rock stations and MTV, "Hold It Now" was the song that actually resonated on rap radio in the 80s. Lots of Elvisy stories about dudes not knowing they where white etc etc. It really is the "heads" choice if that means anything to anyone, and it obviously does every time D-40 makes fun of me for liking "Cadillacs on 22s"

thommys got bendz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 16 May 2012 15:35 (twelve years ago) link

^ this is all true but I voted for "hold it now" cuz it was a jam then and it's a jam now, the bass hits on that are superb for alltimes

i gave you a hard time because i was (not really) incensed at the low placement of "fight for your right", and i suspect that a lot of people elided or slighted it due to its onetime ubiquity and/or obviousness. wanted to strike a small blow for "first love best love", not that any of this really matters.

with whiney, i was just lolling at the absurdity of rating beastie boys songs according to their rapness.

It's a good thing all your suspicions were wrong and you apologized for it.
