Sinitta - "So Macho"

snoball, Saturday, 8 March 2008 14:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Er, no, NOT "So Macho", which was actually BANNED by DJ Ian Levine at Heaven, owing to the opening line: "I don't want no seven stone weakling nor a boy who thinks he's a girl". Its composer, one Reverend George Hargreaves, further went on to blot his copybook by donating money to a bunch of firemen who refused to hand out leaflets at a gay pride march. ("The gay community have sexualised firemen.") Strike it from the records, I say!

That StreetSounds Hi-Energy album is bloody wonderful, by the way. Mixed by the self-same Ian Levin who BANNED "So Macho", indeed.

mike t-diva, Saturday, 8 March 2008 14:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Why would firemen hand out leaflets at a gay pride march unless they were gay themselves?

Tuomas, Saturday, 8 March 2008 14:57 (sixteen years ago) link

What I mean, I don't get the "refused to hand out leaflets" part... Are firemen forced to hand out leaflets at gay parades?

Tuomas, Saturday, 8 March 2008 14:59 (sixteen years ago) link

Shut up and sleep with me - Sin with Sebastian

Not the real Village People, Saturday, 8 March 2008 15:10 (sixteen years ago) link

I believe they were job recruitment leaflets, such as might be handed out at other large public festivals, and that the refusal to hand them out brought about discplinary action and a subsequent appeal, and that the money was donated to help cover costs.

The entire oeuvre of Pansy Division to thread.

That StreetSounds Hi-Energy album is bloody wonderful, by the way.

It is, especially side one - the mix from Countdown (Here I Come)to Skiing In The Snow is one of the gayest moments on disc ever.

Ned Trifle II, Saturday, 8 March 2008 23:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Vol. 2 was sadly awful, though...

mike t-diva, Sunday, 9 March 2008 11:40 (sixteen years ago) link

This thread needs Jobriath... his "I'm A Man" nearly turned me gay, and I am 100% heterosexual.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Sunday, 9 March 2008 13:13 (sixteen years ago) link

Wayne County - Fuck off

"If you don't want to fuck me baby, then baby fuck off" also more or less summarises what I feel about this thread.
