yeah in general people who ONLY like music from before their time tend to be a little crypto-creepy ime.

Have you met any of these rare creatures?

MIke Love Battery (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 15:01 (fourteen years ago)

Some might actually cover it up by picking a few players to appreciate-"Oh yeah, I like Jimi Hendrix!" - but that's about as far as it goes. I'm sure somebody will say I made this up, but I assure you this strawman exists.

This is absolutely 100% true. I've been in on many of these conversations, and this attitude spans generations (though isn't as prevalent with younger players).

Charles Shaar Murray, in his brilliant Hendrix book Crosstown Traffic, had a great line about how if some homicidal time-traveler were to strangle at birth every jazz guitarist between Charlie Christian and Jimi Hendrix, the overall arc and development of the music as a whole wouldn't be any different.

In other news, apparently when Congress reauthorized the FAA a month ago, they made it clear that musical instruments were permitted as carry-on baggage so long as they fit in the compartment- you can see this on the TSA website, guitars and violins specifically mentioned- but I don't think the airline personnel have been informed, you still have to argue with them about this

MIke Love Battery (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 4 April 2012 18:44 (fourteen years ago)

Hm. I guess the law was signed on Valentine's Day, but there is a two year rollout period

MIke Love Battery (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 5 April 2012 01:21 (fourteen years ago)

Back to the other topic. You don't see this kind of thing too much with, say, bassists and drummers, they like themselves some funk too much, for one thing. Saxophonists though...

My man Wes deserves a little more respect than that.

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Thursday, 5 April 2012 01:38 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, feel like that was a little overboard. It's the other side of the debate that ultimately ends up being one of these deals http://www.lewrockwell.com/grigg/Colors_of_contention.jpg

MIke Love Battery (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 5 April 2012 01:58 (fourteen years ago)

One time I heard Von Freeman's brother George on a Charlie Parker record and man if he didn't sound like Hendrix avant la lettre

MIke Love Battery (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 5 April 2012 02:18 (fourteen years ago)

Ha, I actually just happened to re-read that passage, and it's actually between Christian and Wes, not Christian and Hendrix.

You know what's a great record that I am listening to now? Billy Bauer - Plectrist.

Friend of mine found this on youtube. Richard Davis looks (and plays like he is) high out of his mind. Still pretty cool though.

Makes me want to change mine to Baron FAPurday, but on second thought, no.

Did you guys know that Lenny Breau's first jazz session (1961) was with Levon Helm and Rick Danko as rhythm section? Also, it fucking smokes. They're not an amazing jazz rhythm section but they get out of the way, which is the best thing they could do for his liszt-esque runs.

Just asked one of TD's well-known students if he played the list everyday. He laughed and said "Everyday? I'm still trying to get through it!"

Seriously, I think I went crazy trying to play Parisian Thoroughfare on the guitar. Of course I had only heard the lightning-fast Bud Powell version and it had never occurred to me to play it half time like here:

oh and I forgot to mention that the super-fast bud powell version is the one he gave us on the tape he gave us with all the tunes. Small fuck you for that one Ted, RIP all the same.

Just trying to do my job as Jazz Investigator, Josh.

Guy also said he can still hear Ted's voice

one month passes...

Question: which two beloved, much missed Jazz Guitarists/Teachers were born in Port Arthur, Texas? Hint: one played on many film soundtracks including those of The Wild Bunch and Ocean's Eleven, both of which he was an extra in.

Next question: What Jazz Guitarist had a successful career at his advertising day job before he retired to play music full-time and has just written a bestselling cookbook?

F is for Fule (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 8 June 2012 19:08 (fourteen years ago)

no idea!
but i was listening to this album last night.

very nice, but a missed opportunity w/ the cover image -- should've had kessel standing at the stove flipping a pancake or something.

tylerw, Friday, 8 June 2012 19:14 (fourteen years ago)

If I could imagine one jazz guitarist being successful in advertising and writing a cookbook, it'd be George Benson, but I'm guessing that's wrong.

He's not a famous guitarist.

F is for Fule (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 8 June 2012 19:28 (fourteen years ago)

I only learned of him because he his a family friend of a guy I know but he is well-known in certain circles.

There's some jazz guitar in Sunnyside this Wednesday, if you want to kill two birds with one stone and check out your new neighborhood.

Also, the other guitar player, Tosh, whose gig it is, has two little kids so you can ask him about facilities for children in the area.
