Album appears to be in *ahem* circulation now. GGW was not just a bad choice to open the album, but a bad choice altogether (this can't be restated often enough).

The album is shockingly pretty damn brilliant. The singles are somehow the worst songs on the album (which for someone with 30 years experience in the industry and for being well Madonna is ridiculous).

The acoustic "Love Spent" on one of the deluxe editions is pretty goddamn great.

"B-Day Song" is like some ridiculous joke and I absolutely adore it
― Joan Cusack clumsily running into a water fountain (Stevie D(eux)), Saturday, 24 March 2012 01:42 (twelve years ago) link
so is this one of those cases where you have to get the deluxe editions to get the better tracks ?
― mark e, Monday, 26 March 2012 13:50 (twelve years ago) link
has she ever attempted a song like "B-Day Song"? It's like ABBA attempting a kid's song played on live instruments by Muppets.

"i'm addicted" is pretty awesome
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 26 March 2012 15:06 (twelve years ago) link
and i'm not sure about "gang bang" but it's... genuinely disturbing
― TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 26 March 2012 15:10 (twelve years ago) link
"gang bang" is the best thing here imo
"i don't give a" and "i'm addicted" are the other two that stood out and if i'm being honest the chorus of "give me all your luvin'" is stuck in my head a great deal of the time. it sounds less good when i actually play it, because madonna's voice is a total husk now, it drags down decent songs/fails to elevate catchy-but-basic bubblegum tunes/sinks each of the ballads.
― lex pretend, Monday, 26 March 2012 15:45 (twelve years ago) link
"i'm addicted" is great and sort of what i wanted this whole record to sound like, given the title mdna
― Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Monday, 26 March 2012 18:00 (twelve years ago) link
"Gang Bang" might grow on me but right now it's just super annoying
― THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Monday, 26 March 2012 18:08 (twelve years ago) link
haaaaaa I just got to the dubstep bridge
― THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Monday, 26 March 2012 18:09 (twelve years ago) link
well this whole song is just spectacularly falling apart
I just cannot take "DRIVE BITCH/NOW DIE BITCH" very seriously
― THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Monday, 26 March 2012 18:11 (twelve years ago) link
"I'm Addicted" is actually a good song
After the two singles and "Gang Bang", I was not expecting this
― THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Monday, 26 March 2012 18:13 (twelve years ago) link
"superstar" = worst madonna lyrics yet?
― Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Monday, 26 March 2012 18:14 (twelve years ago) link
well "I'm Addicted" was a good song until she ran out of ideas at the end and started aimlessly chanting "M! D! N! A"
holy fuck I am 30 seconds into "Turn Up The Radio" and I want to murder everyone I have ever known so that they don't accidentally hear it
― THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Monday, 26 March 2012 18:16 (twelve years ago) link
hahahahaha "i don't give a" is awesome, choral stuff at the end is so ott
― Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Monday, 26 March 2012 18:18 (twelve years ago) link
like, there are a bunch of components here on paper that I should really, really like, but it's put together in the most fucking annoying manner possible and I'm just sitting here thinking "SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP SHUT UP FOR THE LOVE OF GOD"
― THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Monday, 26 March 2012 18:19 (twelve years ago) link
don't share your hate for "turn up the radio," dan. it's just kind of nothing
― Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Monday, 26 March 2012 18:20 (twelve years ago) link
although "Gimme All Your Luvin" is even more annoying, lol
"Some Girls" sounds like an anonymous diva house remix, which automatically makes it the second best song I've heard on this album so far
― THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Monday, 26 March 2012 18:21 (twelve years ago) link
okay "Superstar" is just PATHETIC

hoo boy
"I Don't Give A" reminds me a little too much of "Top That!" from "Teen Witch":

― Whiney vs. (BradNelson), Monday, 26 March 2012 18:30 (twelve years ago) link
I don't think I'd even give it that, based on what I've heard so far
― THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Monday, 26 March 2012 18:32 (twelve years ago) link
So then it's officially the worst album of all time. Check.
― hot and brothered (Eric H.), Monday, 26 March 2012 18:35 (twelve years ago) link
had the coda on "I Don't Give A" been the intro, it might have saved the song
"I'm A Sinner" sounds like it actually has quantizing issues, like they couldn't get the components of the loop to match up correctly; it's still the third-best song I've heard on this album
― THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Monday, 26 March 2012 18:35 (twelve years ago) link
"Love Spent" starts with a banjo, that's a good sign
haha and once that goes away the song gets much much much better
― THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Monday, 26 March 2012 18:40 (twelve years ago) link
did she just say "Frankly, if my name was Benjamin/We wouldn't be in the mess we're in"
oh Madonna
― THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Monday, 26 March 2012 18:41 (twelve years ago) link
"I want you to hold me like you hold your money/Hold me 'til there's nothing left"
this is still the third- or fourth-best song on the album

okay what the fuck, "Falling Free" just started and why do I like the ballads so much??
Lyrically, it's still kind of inane but at least she sounds like she has a personality and the melody does more than just sit on one note for entire verses
― THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Monday, 26 March 2012 18:49 (twelve years ago) link

this really surprises me b/c i think even more than the underwritten songs, lyrical clunkers and uninspiring producers, madonna's terrible terrible delivery is what sinks the album - someone with a semblance of character could've rescued even the inane songs but she sounds bored and rigid and characterless for the most part, and this is especially the case where she's required to sound emotional (the ballads) or carefree (the bubblegum)
― lex pretend, Monday, 26 March 2012 18:52 (twelve years ago) link
I'm with lex re her voice. It's as if this is what happens to billions spent on voice lessons and locution: after fifteen years the warranty runs out and she forgot to keep the receipt.
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 March 2012 18:55 (twelve years ago) link
I completely agree that Madonna's delivery is terrible right up until the last two songs on the main album; "Beautiful Killer" is also much less irritating than the lion's share of the album.
haha oh my god "I Fucked Up" on the other hand is absolutely the terrible flat affect horseshit delivery you are calling out
― THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Monday, 26 March 2012 18:56 (twelve years ago) link
i've just realised dan hasn't got to "bday song" yet
*anticipates*
― lex pretend, Monday, 26 March 2012 18:58 (twelve years ago) link
(i agree that for some reason "beautiful killer" does work v well)
"I Fucked Up" should have been double-time the whole song, it wouldn't come across quite so lifelessly

"Bday Song" is my favorite.
― Exile in lolville (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 26 March 2012 18:59 (twelve years ago) link
seriously though, she has zero awareness and zero people around her who give a shit if "I Fucked Up" in this form was allowed to go out the door

― THIS TRADE SERVES ZERO FOOTBALL PURPOSE (DJP), Monday, 26 March 2012 19:01 (twelve years ago) link
I am too bemused to make a judgement about this
the vocals thing is particularly sad because her voice was so crazy good at elevating her (already classic) material - could anyone have done 'open your heart' or 'into the groove' or 'burning up' or 'crazy for you' as well as her? her 80's voice is one of pop's most underrated instruments. And I don't think there's any excuse to what it's become other than sheer laziness (which is SO NOT A GOOD LOOK on you madge).
― prolego, Monday, 26 March 2012 19:02 (twelve years ago) link
hahahaha seriously what was that, though
