Yeah, love this album too. Really dig how expressive Q is, even most of his adlibs feel like the pitch and aesthetic has been just so carefully considered. And the production is sick pretty much top to bottom.

The two albums strike me as both good and quite similar.

god it feels like every rap thread i go in contains deej telling someone they're rong or their opinion is weird for enjoying rapper x or preferring album y

i also preferred habits & contradictions slightly, setbacks took a few listens to settle while H&C was pretty immediate

thats completely backwards though. sorry for telling you you're wrong but ... H&C is a much less immediate record

they're both good obv

but whatever makes you feel better about sleeping on the 1st one & justifying it in retrospect

but if you want to discuss the contents of the record, joints like 'kamikaze' and 'fantasy' have much more traditional pop sounds to them than pretty much anything on this record, which goes in a much more oblique / abstract direction, IMHO

thats not saying one is better than the other inherently, i just happened to prefer the former approach personally, although I like both records. I do have trouble understanding how you can hear the weirder approach of this record as being a step towards 'immediacy' though, or i'm at least going to need you guys to explain more clearly what you mean by that term b/c i think its kind of self-evident how the two records split along these lines

i dunno what in particular, but it definitely has that "non-mainstream rapper makes begrudging and half-assed attempt at mainstream song" vibe that always has put me off, even if the particulars might be a bit different, and the hook falls stupid flat.

the song w/ jhene on the new one is way better imo

I listened to his record and was unimpressed with it last year, dog. Didn't even know he was BNMed either. You don't have to second-guess everything.

ok so on our original point, 'immediate' means, 'i liked it more right away', but isnt an intrinsic quality of the actual music, but i'm saying that it was more immediate in the pop sense, and that's something i value while you tend to value perhaps a more abstract approach from this partic. artist

schoolboy q just kind of drones, jhene sounds uninvested, and it's really small-sounding, fades into the background easily

"Kamikaze" and (especially) "Fantasy" are def. my favourite tracks on Setbacks.

"Fantasy" is pretty much perfect, esp. that bit where the beat gets all muted and fuzzy like you're listening from inside the womb.

I immediately loved both Setbacks and Habits & Contradictions

this album really isn't all that

mostly i don't get why everyone is falling all over themselves to talk about how good the production is... i think some of the beats are really corny

if not corny than at least just kinda off-putting... sorta like the danny brown record except without the implicit acknowledgement that some of the beats are supposed to piss you off

like H&C much more than setbacks, probably because of the production...

i feel like the production is more ear-catching on H&C and schoolboy q stretches himself vocally a lot more too - the songs have a lot more unexpected twists and tangents that keep you interested and the beats are pretty incredible.

How popular is he? I really like him but I feel like he ain't talked about as much as A$AP Rocky or anyone from the mumble crew.

new album out today--it felt like there was a weird lack of hype for this one, idk why.

gave it a full listen this morning. feels low-stakes and fragmented compared to Blank Face. some good moments and cool production but weirdly unambitious. some grating hooks, too.

yeah, i figured from the pre-released tracks that it wouldn't be as ambitious or eclectic as blank face, but whatever, every artist reserves the right to make minor works every once in a while.

I don't think he's charming enough to coast through bang average material or something. what a disappointment :(

yeah, this is pretty listless, with a couple exceptions (5200, Numb Numb Juice, maybe the Cudi collab).

yeah, blank face is still his career best imo, and is more sonically ambitious, but he’s rapping at a very high level here
