Nate is somewhere deep underground, cackling and stroking a white cat.

I curse myself for not organizing anything alphabetically.

i've done a CD-R that basically amounts to 'the rarest shit on my hard drive' which won't be saying THAT much but is still a good collection. i may post that elsewhere tho - CD-R according to criteria established by Baron Detritus to follow...

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 2 October 2003 08:15 (twenty years ago) link

I SO WANT THAT CD, STEVE.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 2 October 2003 09:19 (twenty years ago) link

Got all my tracks selected and am burning them for my own (deeeeeevious) listening purposes, but when I get home from work I'll put them in order and post the playlist.

I wound up with about 220 chosen, culled down to 172 (128 kbps). A ton of familiar stuff, though the closest there is to an Annoying Canonical Song is Dylan's "Ballad of a Thin Man". I also have Ice Cube's "It Was A Good Day" so no complaints pls

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 2 October 2003 09:42 (twenty years ago) link

I'll get in on this, but it will be next week before I can actually post something. I love trades.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 2 October 2003 11:15 (twenty years ago) link

hmm could be interesting. let me try to put something together.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 2 October 2003 11:33 (twenty years ago) link

Haha, I was trying to decide if "It Was a Good Day" should be on mine, too! Sadly, I figure that it will take me at least a month to decide on 100 songs. There are bands I love that have plenty of great songs, but no stand-out track. This makes my head hurt.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 2 October 2003 14:19 (twenty years ago) link

this is really hard!!

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 2 October 2003 14:23 (twenty years ago) link

THIS IS COOL.

It may take me a day or two or three, but I'm in.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Thursday, 2 October 2003 19:52 (twenty years ago) link

oh wait: AT LEAST 100? damn.

adaml (adaml), Thursday, 2 October 2003 19:56 (twenty years ago) link

I would also love to exchange some cd-rs.

My list is down to 170 songs, which all fit onto one cd-r, and none of the songs are under 128. Woohoo! I think I'll listen to it some and move the tracks around and probably eliminate many before I post it, but I'm hoping the list'll be ready sometime tonight.

Looks like a good mix, stevem. I'd love a copy.

I feel bad, because no matter how hard I try (not very), I keep coming up with multiple tracks by a few of the same artists. Does that alone make me a terrible person?

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Friday, 3 October 2003 01:25 (twenty years ago) link

I've got to rip some CDs and make a few replacements, so gimme a couple of days and I'll e-mail you, LC.

I know I need Neil Young's "Old Man" and Nada Surf's "Blonde on Blonde"

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Friday, 3 October 2003 15:16 (twenty years ago) link

Damn - I forgot the Modern Lovers' "I'm Straight" and Roy Orbison's "In Dreams". Lucky I'd only listed 101 so far.

Two votes for 'Tugboat' in a row!

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 3 October 2003 16:32 (twenty years ago) link

Actually, there's probably fucking loads I forgot. I just wanted to be first.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 3 October 2003 16:37 (twenty years ago) link

I can't believe I've got no Prince or Talking Heads on mine. Glaring.

scott m (mcd), Friday, 3 October 2003 16:39 (twenty years ago) link

Two in a row for Liz Phair's 'Divorce Song' and three over all, so far.

Switching Roy Orbison from 'In Dreams' to 'Only the Lonely' was pretty much the last change I made.

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Friday, 3 October 2003 16:42 (twenty years ago) link

Nate, can you clarify this please:

One song per "billed" artist (use discretion re: "featuring..." appearances or production spots)

Are we allowed to have both Luna and Galaxie 500, both Morrissey and the Smiths?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 3 October 2003 16:49 (twenty years ago) link

George Harrison and the Beatles?

scott m (mcd), Friday, 3 October 2003 16:56 (twenty years ago) link

That's the way they should have billed.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 3 October 2003 17:01 (twenty years ago) link

ha

scott m (mcd), Friday, 3 October 2003 17:02 (twenty years ago) link

It took me way too long to make this list; I really hope I don't have to change any of it now. I think there are significant differences between Galaxie 500 & Luna or John Cale & The Velvet Underground, etc. I avoided using all the different monikers Will Oldham has had over the past few years and just picked one overall song for him, although I can see an argument for using him more than once. Maybe we can just use our own best judgement? please

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Friday, 3 October 2003 17:08 (twenty years ago) link

OK I'm in. Here's a reasonably catholic (small 'c') mix of tunes, limited by what I have on the hard drive, but I'll stand by 'em all as beloved. I tried at the same time, with a few exceptions, to stay away from the too obviously canonical. But I could take these tunes with me into the hereafter and be happy. (Yes, there's a tune or two by bands with overlapping personnel, but I wouldn't say the same band. Sue me.) Presented here alphabetically, though it could use a different sequence (and could get one,) I reckon:

A Certain Ratio--Flight
The Action--In My Dreams (Demo)
Alex Chilton--Bangkok
Alice Cooper--The Ballad of Dwight Fry
All-Night Workers--Why Don't You Smile Now?
Allen Toussaint--Goin' Down
Amy Rigby--Time For Me To Come Down
Apollo Smile--Friends
Art Ensemble of Chicago--Theme de YoYo
Baby Huey--Runnin
Ballin' Jack--Never Let Em Say
Barry and The Remains--Lonely Weekend
Beach Boys--Til I Die (alt mix w/intro)
Big Star--Motel Blues (demo)
Bird Nest Roys--Jaffa Boy
Black Keys--She Said She Said

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Friday, 3 October 2003 21:11 (twenty years ago) link

The thing is, the 100 songs that mean most to me, are probably written by 20-5 bands.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 4 October 2003 16:09 (twenty years ago) link

Well, here's mine, ranging from stuff I've loved since I was 8 to things I discovered two weeks ago. I'm happy with the track listing, but I'm also more proud of the actual sequencing than any normal person should be. "Highway Star" into John Coltrane! It works, damn it! And I managed to keep shit a bit more mixed-up genre-wise than my usual "here are 20 disco songs in a row, gradually shifting into post-punk" routine, even though the flow of the rhythms and general sonic themes stays mostly constant.

Notes:

1) King Geedorah and MF Doom are technically the same MC, but the Geedorah track here doesn't feature him on the mic, just producing. Loophole ahoy!

2) Sorry Matos, but when it came down to Santana vs. Candido for full rights to blow fuckin' MINDS, man with "Jingo", I had to let space decide. Three minutes beats 9+ when I'm trying to cram in as much goodness as possible. (Yet I throw in "Shine on you Crazy Diamond", "Walk On By", "Hidden Shadows", "Marquee Moon" and "The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys"... uh, hey, look over there)

3) Boy there's a lot of covers.

4) There's a few songs/songs-what-sample-them occurrences. I deliberately pointed this out with the "Man Next Door"/"When the Levee Breaks" sequence.

5) TS: Lemmy vs. Mike Watt!

6) The Lou Reed song is from the completely-outta-print cult '80s animated post-apocalyptic rock sci-fi funny animal musical Rock & Rule; and I chose it because he's campy and ridiculous and stupid in this.

7) I didn't include anything by the Sex Pistols because [insert non-stupid explanation here later when I can think of one, because I can't right now]

8) Fair warning - some of these MP3s sound cruddy because they were originally recorded that way: "You Caught Me Smiling" is from that horribly-transferred There's A Riot Goin' On CD; "I'm A Pretender" is LOUD LOUD LOUD LOUD LOUD; there's some weird echoey effect on "Rocker's Dub" (ha ha I kid).

The length requirement seems pretty arbitrarily chosen unless we'll be swapping physical CD-Rs via the mail (which I'd gather is the idea?).

i'm in and would love to trade
It reminds me of the mid 80s trading seriously dodgy live tapes of terrible hardcore punk bands.

I need time though.

And I'm going to make no excuses for the predictable.

Then I realise that the original request was 2004!!!! Fuck!!!!

But it looks like the BIG HOOS is rallying the Troops again?

Problem is I go on holiday next week. So I will be unavailable for a fortnight

^ can't wait to trade and outclass 'Internet Person's' - he's missing some Kevin Keegan though!
