And now they've got a new album out, "Today Is A Good Day".
"Everything is beautiful, because everything is dying..."
More righteous anger, some metalic riffs in the title track, overall a better album than "Carnival". More of what you'd expect from this lot, and I like it.

But "Eight" is their best in the past 20 years.

Last album, "Between Dog And Wolf" was fantastic - very tribal with a big drum emphasis and hardly any guitars. An EP of new material and a live album are out together this week as "Between Wine And Blood".

The new EP is great too. Maybe a bit closer to the "traditional" NMA sound than the album. I'm amazed that I've been listening to them for close to 30 years now and they're still putting out records that I love on a pretty regular schedule. And still putting on some of the best live shows I've seen. Hope they come back to the U.S. soon; I've had to miss them the last couple of times.

Yay, the first NMA fan other than me in 7 years!
Terribly overlooked, taken for granted or written off, take your pick. Everything they've done is worth hearing. Justin's solo album is crazy good, so atmospheric and powerful.

Ha, yeah, looks like you were talking to yourself for a while there. I'm doing my part to pass the love on to the next generation -- when my three-month-old gets a little fussy at night I sing "225" to him and he puts his head on my shoulder and settles right down.
I just took a look at their discography to see if there's anything I missed over the years (I do have and am a big fan of Justin's album) and I'm going to have to check out Big Guitars in Little Europe. I don't collect all of their live stuff but that one looks like it could be interesting.

Oooo, "Big Guitars" is a cracking acoustic live set! Absolutely top notch, definitely the live album I'd recommend along with "And Nobody Else" as critical.

I just wanna chime in and say that I'm a NMA fan of yore so you are not alone. I just don't have anything to contribute as I haven't listened to anything they've done since...so fucking long ago I dunno. Haven't seen them live since more than two decades and absent-mindedly passed up the chance a couple of years ago on their 2012 North American tour. If there is one album from the last 20 years I should check out what would it be?

I still concur with my 2010 self - "Eight" is their best of their later works, though Justin Sullivan's "Navigating By The Stars" is a wonderful thing unto itself.

Just quickly read a couple of reviews of Navigating by the Stars. Sounds interesting. Definitely will check that out.

I'm so out of the loop with these guys now and with tours in general I just want to share this story - I saw a Joolz cassette of all things in a thrift store not that long ago which surprised me (I'm over on the west coast of Canada so how it got here is anyone's guess) and my thoughts turned to NMA. I remember that I'd seen it mentioned recently that they were going to be playing here so I googled it and it turns out that I'd missed it by about 18 months! As I say, totally out of the loop and rolling my eyes at my own lack of attention to this kind of stuff.

New album, "Winter" just came out and it's more of what you love from NMA. They bring back the guitars and tone down the tribal feeling of "Between Dog And Wolf". This is their 13th album and while some are better than others, each one is chock full of angry folk-rock goodness.

hmm, if this is on Spotify i will have to investigate.

on track 4 of the new one and... really enjoying it. massive gulf between the quality of some of their recent material and the almost complete lack of publicity/press attention. will they ever get a critical reevaluation i wonder...

Probably not. I really dig the new one, too, which continues to merge the brilliant tribal feeling of "Between Dog & Wolf" with their folk-rock sound. Justin's lyrics continue to reflect my view of the world as well. And he revisited his utterly captivating solo album, "Navigating By The Stars", on the track "Conversation"!

Justin Sullivan has a new solo album out, "Surrounded", and while it doesn't reach the tremendous highs of his first solo LP, it's very good.
