^^OTM. I now kinda regret I didn't dig into Tim's catalogue earlier and more thoroughly

I get what al is saying above about "Come & Get Me" being "least outwardly dazzling" (tho obv this is a relative statement) but "Come & Get Me" is just so striking and memorable to me, so perfectly really. It's not just the way the song pivots on that weird spaced out ambient section early on (though that's great) but also the fact that the beat that comes in at that point actually feels like a place you have to journey to arrive at, a "shit just got real" moment that'd sound really weird just going straight into it from the top. And what a beat - paranoid as fuck, the interplay between the bullet-kick bass riffs and the eerie synth chords such a perfect encapsulation of raw aggression and deceptive poise, the simultaneous depiction of the grace of being at the top and what it took to get there and stay there. Not to mention the minor modulations between each element, the way Tim adjusts the levels constantly to evoke the sense of constantly traveling further into Jay's paranoia.

Wah this thing that didn't even exist a year ago won't let me stream every single song in recorded history. What a piece of shit!!!!

James Ferraro Boyz (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 14:18 (twelve years ago) link

actually it exists like a 3 years now, and it's always been a problem

It's like whiney takes pride in not wikipediaing how long Spotify has been in the uk, which i know is like a year or three. Pedantry is def not gonna help u win this argument, just saying.

43. Aaliyah featuring Missy Elliott and Timbaland - "Hot Like Fire
(Timbaland's Groove Remix)" (284 points, 10 voters)
combined votes for the remix and the original version
from One In A Million, 1996
#31 R&B/Hip-Hop (charted 1997)

Maybe it's just the giant red hummers in the video, but I think of
the remix version of this song that was released as a single as
Timbaland's quintessential "jeep beat," just a massive summer jam that
should be more of a seasonal radio staple than it is. Fun fact: a
total of five songs with the word "hot" in the title received votes in
this poll.

SO happy 4 Page Letter and Make It Hot made it. I thought they'd end up totally undervalued.

42. Jay-Z - "Dirt Off Your Shoulder" (312 points, 9 voters)
from The Black Album, 2003
#5 Hot 100, #3 R&B/Hip-Hop (charted 2004)

All I'll say here is this is the first song on the list I really
feel doesn't belong here.
(some dude)

I daresay this is the last indisputably great moment from both these guys; sure, they each had a handful of standouts later in their respective games, but in my heart this is pinnacle. Jay is in late peak form; more an instrument than a voice, he fills the entire song with his belligerent, methodical, near monotone that gives solidity and constancy to a crazy quilt of hyperactive metronome, egg shaker accents, near-preset drums, an array of bold face sound effects and that relentless five note hook repeated twice: once for the shoulders, then again but faster for the hips, punctuated with a single farting bass note. And you want proof of lasting power? Almost half a decade later, Obama may not have been able to put Jay on the stage to help his election but when he got that dirt off his shoulders, we knew what he meant. (forks)

Embedded into the song name.

i mean in ilx preferences

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 14:49 (twelve years ago) link

kinda proves what i suspected that ppl would vote purely on the basis of songs rather than with an eye to what timbo did on it. (not saying you shouldnt ever do this but in terms of the question...)

didnt realise 'call me' was so beloved, never been a big deal to me

r|t|c, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 14:51 (twelve years ago) link

dirt off your shoulder is one simple riff and timbo probably could have put it together in five minutes, but it sounds so (for lack of a better word) dirty.

hardcore oatmeal (Jordan), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 14:51 (twelve years ago) link

xpost Me neither, it's nice though.

eh I liked it then and like it now. It remains a B+ track.

bitch if you voted for b+ shit i don't know what to say.

Tim F, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 14:52 (twelve years ago) link

all those "hot like fire" remixes are dope

"she's a bitch" is such a banger. i love vibing to the outro.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 September 2011 14:53 (twelve years ago) link

I didn't vote for it at all. It's a decent single.

Anakin Ska Walker (AKA Skarth Vader) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 14:54 (twelve years ago) link

xpost to Tim

Anakin Ska Walker (AKA Skarth Vader) (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 14:54 (twelve years ago) link

we've had to talk about "dirt off your shoulder" too much lately

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 13 September 2011 14:54 (twelve years ago) link

45 she's a bitch seems... like a bit of a novelty on DRW? Same with Hot Boyz, imo. Like I love them both but they might have fit in better on other records (or a greatest hits! does missy have one? would seem essential.) instead of hanging with whole jams of hot boys, redman, em with missy basically on the chorus. i love missy on her own, but that record was all about how well tim and missy bounced off others and she's a bitch seems like a novelty in the middle of that.

Ravaging Rick Rude (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 13 September 2011 14:55 (twelve years ago) link

ah, i was late getting my blurbs in. Edited in my thoughts for "dirt off my shoulder"; hope you don't mind al.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 14:57 (twelve years ago) link

haha i wonder how many blurbs will say "is this the last great Timbaland production?"

Tim F, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 14:58 (twelve years ago) link

I kinda feel like people coming to early Timbaland productions retrospectively would find it easier to just skim and then adopt received wisdom (which is basically reaping for singles and being ignorant of the rest).

This is probably true for most production "auteurs" but Timbaland is the first I was following from nearly the start in real time so it's more jarring seeing people act like Future Sex Love Sounds is the first great Timbaland album.

Tim F, Monday, 20 October 2014 10:00 (nine years ago) link

yeah...i remember my brother getting Supa Dupa Fly and Welcome To Our World and before there was any real hype about Timbaland being the driving force of all that stuff it just bowled me over how different and alive everything sounded

some dude, Monday, 20 October 2014 13:11 (nine years ago) link

the grizzled vet of the nineties squints at the youngster and growls "we suffered magoo so that you could have your goddam justink timbershake why in my day we clamored for a Playa album and that was the way we liked it"

Steve 'n' Seagulls and Flock of Van Dammes (forksclovetofu), Monday, 20 October 2014 13:48 (nine years ago) link

five months pass...

It's really annoying that the only Timbaland albums available on streaming services are the Shock Value ones.

Even more annoying that they're mostly packed with forgettable collaborations with people who shouldn't be on a Timbaland album. Tim, give Magoo a call!
