fancy is the one where i just find dream's fantasy about this materialistic woman kind of dumb, but i might be being unfair. if it were written by a chick about herself i might like it more. also, though, it would probably be better.

i haven't listened to it in ages so i will now

horseshoe, Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:01 (twelve years ago) link

I don't really listen to the-dream for the lyrics

dayo, Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:01 (twelve years ago) link

the production on that is so epic xp

D-40, Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:01 (twelve years ago) link

except for 'florida university' why because f. u.

dayo, Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:01 (twelve years ago) link

what do the LvMs bring sonically though - hey, terius knows how to trigger a gunshot sound?

idk i've always taken these almost like the-dream & tricky's take on industrial music

i mean it's sort of an obvious trick -- cold & punishing beats frame a song where a dude's life has become sad -- but i think it works

J0rdan S., Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:02 (twelve years ago) link

"fancy" is just o_O in every way

J0rdan S., Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:02 (twelve years ago) link

'fancy' is this 6 minute concentration of energies that never really finds a release, it's awesome

dayo, Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:02 (twelve years ago) link

yeah...i am dumb about talking about the music part of music so i talk about lyrics but i don't mean just lyrics, i just don't have the language to talk about the sound part. but i really love some of his lyrics.

i don't agree w/ that at all!!

J0rdan S., Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:03 (twelve years ago) link

yah fancy is more swirling wide screen cinematic grandeur

D-40, Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:04 (twelve years ago) link

the thing i basically love about his sound is the "everything is happening inside a bouncy castle" feel. sometimes the lyrics are so dumb they take me out of the song, and i'm afraid "fancy" is one of those.

horseshoe, Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:04 (twelve years ago) link

haha well I almost never listen to the lyrics unless they jump out at me. I'm also an eng/lit major type fwiw.

I would totally write a freud style sublimation of energies essay about fancy if I was still into masturbating into music publications

dayo, Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:04 (twelve years ago) link

wait yeah what would u call the last 30 seconds of not a "release"

frogsb (k3vin k.), Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:05 (twelve years ago) link

i think that part of me is also forgiving about it because i am broke & fantasize pretty readily / can understand why ppl fantasize about how much money would change their lives when working a shitty job, and i guess at some level i wish a the-dream would swoop in & hook me up w/ private jet rides

but not terius specifically

D-40, Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:05 (twelve years ago) link

this song is soooooooooooooo long you guys

horseshoe, Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:05 (twelve years ago) link

'right side of my brain' is the release

prolego, Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:05 (twelve years ago) link

i know, it's weird, i like a lot of songs about materialism, but i just don't vibe with the particular fantasy in fancy

horseshoe, Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:06 (twelve years ago) link

the last 30 secs get so close to being an eruption but it never quite gets unhinged - it's like at the moment he's about to go for the nuclear option he realizes that it's better to go for a 'honey attracts flies' approach and gearshifts into the absolute melting lushness of 'right side of my brain'

dayo, Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:07 (twelve years ago) link

first of all, you could argue that the payoff is the end of "right side of my brain", which means that it just takes really long to get to

BUT

i think the part in "fancy" before the rap where the instrumental is really swelling up and the-dream starts scatting (lol) and there's the screwed vocal ("all we do is, we spend this money") is a great & sorta subtle climax, then it all drops out for his rap so there's a tension release -- idk that part was always pretty epic to me

J0rdan S., Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:08 (twelve years ago) link

like my fav. part about the last 30 secs is the way those deep drums come in w/ like 10 seconds left while there are all these like 2-3 synth runs in the background - but his voice still remains measured, control, and the last line is "but even when I used to rock polos I was fancy..." and that's a capitulation, not a sign of victory

dayo, Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:09 (twelve years ago) link

the swooping strings are the release imo, yeah, the part w/ the double-time rap

D-40, Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:09 (twelve years ago) link

2-3 second synth runs, that should say

dayo, Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:09 (twelve years ago) link

'right side of my brain' is the comedown, not the release

dayo, Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:10 (twelve years ago) link

just realized this listening back the other night but i love how "fancy" evokes a sound that i think is sorta stereotypical of, like, a parisisan square? jazzy woodwinds & whatever,.

no!! "right side of my brain" is tense as hell. that's where the "explosive release" is. the last minute of that song is the heaviest part of the album.

the release is mr. yeah/kelly's 12 play, where he is back to fucking

J0rdan S., Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:11 (twelve years ago) link

get outta here grady

J0rdan S., Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:12 (twelve years ago) link

er, the comedown is mr. yeah etc

J0rdan S., Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:12 (twelve years ago) link

cant decide if im more frustrated by rong opinions here or in the politics thread

D-40, Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:12 (twelve years ago) link

probably here

this is weird to me, but i think it's because i would prefer an album of mr. yeahs + kelly's 12-play to what love v. money actually is.

horseshoe, Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:14 (twelve years ago) link

lol. okay just looking at the lyrics, 'fancy' is a 6 minute long epic where the-dream is just about to capitulate to this girl and just about to devote himself to her, before he pulls out (lol) at the very last second and takes a step back in 'right side of my brain'

dayo, Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:15 (twelve years ago) link

yeah for me the release has always been in parts - starts with the screwed vocal, then the rap, then finally when the drums come in

frogsb (k3vin k.), Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:15 (twelve years ago) link

can't believe I interrupted my catching up with TSJ to argue these points

^^otm, "mr yeah" is the comedown which is why i do not consider it part of the suite

i know, that one is the best!

horseshoe, Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:18 (twelve years ago) link

& just for the record i tend to get overly critical about this stuff, i mean LvM was my favorite album of 2009

frogsb (k3vin k.), Sunday, 4 September 2011 20:19 (twelve years ago) link

mr. yeah is a victory lap btw, not a comedown

hmmm yeah
