Zep one would be nice cuz of the different 'eras'

I'm looking forward to that one, already thinking about artwork for the reveal.

Mr. Patrick Batman (WmC), Saturday, 18 June 2011 20:07 (twelve years ago) link

I'd've said Bowie, Prince or the jazz dudes would be best for that

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 18 June 2011 20:08 (twelve years ago) link

For comparing eras that is. The Stones too.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 18 June 2011 20:09 (twelve years ago) link

I mean this is one rock band where fans get uber excited over individual songs

Kind of ironic considering AC/DC is one out of very few acts refusing to give fans access to their hits/single tracks. Absolute no, no to all kinds of digital sales/streaming, and no "Best Of"/"Greatest Hits" consisting of original studio versions yet either.

as the person who started this thread i would like to state for the record that this thread is specifically about organized polls with e-mailed ballots and big results reveal threads -- i have no problem in principle with the automated poll threads we already have and in fact would encourage people to just use those instead

i really fail to grasp why one of these irks you so much and the other doesn't. is it the use of OMG ALL CAPS BIG POLL RESULTS REVEAL THREAD TITLE IN ALL CAPS that bothers you?

i love the smell of facepalm in the morning (ledge), Saturday, 18 June 2011 22:54 (twelve years ago) link

i think it was cuz the complainer can't automatically "Hide Polls" for the non-automated polls

why i am an anarcho-sandwich artist (Neanderthal), Saturday, 18 June 2011 22:55 (twelve years ago) link

which means he'll have to scroll, which is hella difficult and annoying amirite

why i am an anarcho-sandwich artist (Neanderthal), Saturday, 18 June 2011 22:55 (twelve years ago) link

that is a fair point i guess not although would be suprised if many people use that option, seems kinda sledgehammer. anyway so make the organised email poll threads normal (fake) poll threads maybe idk.

i love the smell of facepalm in the morning (ledge), Saturday, 18 June 2011 22:57 (twelve years ago) link

personally I've never once participates in one of the manual polls but I really enjoy reading them. and on the rare occasion I don't know anything about the artist in question or don't care, I had the dudes at my laptop factory install this fancy 'trackpad' thing where I can actually move away from the thread in question

why i am an anarcho-sandwich artist (Neanderthal), Saturday, 18 June 2011 23:01 (twelve years ago) link

would vote in:
beatles, dylan, bowie, gbv, jay-z, coltrane, miles, neil, prince, stones, the dan

vu is one of my favorite groups but not enough songs to make a poll interesting, imo. same w/stevie and a bunch of others. neptunes and timbaland would be ehhhhh... i could throw a top 10 together but top 22?

blank, Saturday, 18 June 2011 23:09 (twelve years ago) link

i'm not saying that stevie et al don't have a lot of good songs, i'm saying that it's boring to poll an artist when everyone agrees that EVERY song an artist has done is indisputable awesome.

blank, Saturday, 18 June 2011 23:10 (twelve years ago) link

I'd been toying with doing a Suede poll to tie-in with the reissues, but nbs beat me to it with the blur one. I'd've thought a dozen would be a big enough ballot for them, and no need to run down the top 100 either - 20 or 30 will be fine. Depends on the band and especially level of participation though.

Ismael Klata, Saturday, 18 June 2011 23:13 (twelve years ago) link

I think it would be legit to adjust the numbers for a smaller discography. Personally I wouldn't have a problem having a 30-spot ballot for VU. xxpost

Where did the notion of a 22-entry ballot come from, anyway?

Mr. Patrick Batman (WmC), Saturday, 18 June 2011 23:15 (twelve years ago) link

i would have no problem finding 30 vu songs to vote for, just seems like it would be lacking in 'surprises' or anything. a vu + members solo careers etc would be dope, though

blank, Saturday, 18 June 2011 23:21 (twelve years ago) link

from the disgusting savage who started this vile trend of horrifying polls iirc xp

iatee, Saturday, 18 June 2011 23:24 (twelve years ago) link

shouldn't be done until after the lou reed/metallica joint is out and has a chance to dominate the poll

i already otm'd this post but i will point to it again as an encapsulation of my feelings: what artist, if any, is worth doing an ILM tracks poll?

obviously i can't stop people from doing these polls and wouldn't if i could, but given the copycat tendency of the board where every 'new' thread format tends to beget variations for every britpop and indie band in existence, i dunno i figure it can't hurt to initiate a conversation about this latest trend as it begins to take off and look at whether we wanna pump the brakes or figure out the best way to go about it or what artists to focus on. that's why i made this thread suggesting artists as well as asking the question of whether we should do these at all.

some dude, Saturday, 18 June 2011 23:42 (twelve years ago) link

I think it was a valid question, and, indeed, the point of it was to highlight the need to restrict the bands chosen to the ones that fit one or more profiles....

Like, the Boo Radleys failed because there's not enough potential voters.

Oasis failed because who cares?

Mark G, Saturday, 18 June 2011 23:57 (twelve years ago) link

if we did Oasis I'd reg 300 socks to make "Wibbling Rivalry" the winner

why i am an anarcho-sandwich artist (Neanderthal), Sunday, 19 June 2011 00:00 (twelve years ago) link

for all i know the Boo Radleys might have a good number of voters -- the automated poll for one of their albums last year got almost 40 votes. it just seems weird that for years and years there were only organized polls for like, whole years and decades and genres, and now that the focus is narrowing we're going straight to REALLY narrow subjects.

also i mean some bands like Oasis could have a billion fans and be around for a hundred more years but any poll of their discog would just be the obvious picks from their first 2 albums. subjects ideally shouldn't have just one consensus peak period.

i must be crazy but wasn't there already a Fall tracks poll (no pavement jokes)?

blank, Sunday, 19 June 2011 00:08 (twelve years ago) link

VU due to the randomness that might ensue. Morbid curiosity

kkern, Sunday, 19 June 2011 02:26 (twelve years ago) link

I might pass on voting if a VU poll was opened up to solo careers as well. All I've heard is Berlin, The Blue Mask and Life in Exile After Abdication. Actually I'd probably vote but leave out solo albums.

Mr. Patrick Batman (WmC), Sunday, 19 June 2011 02:38 (twelve years ago) link

The Fall. Yes Sir. T'would be madness of the best kind.

Hinklepicker, Sunday, 19 June 2011 02:38 (twelve years ago) link

Every Beatles song has already been polled at least once, and in most cases probably 4 or 5 times by now...

The Pavement vs Smashing Pumpkins thread went over well, so I think an SP poll would probably get lots of voter interest.. Out of the artists who were arbitrarily nom'd Wu-Tang is the only one I would participate in.. I would be interested to see results from GBV or YLT polls since I'd like to become better acquainted with their enormous catalogs.

I know one Manic Street Preachers song and it's kinda ok I guess.

billstevejim, Sunday, 19 June 2011 07:31 (twelve years ago) link

I know zero songs by The Boo Radleys.

Stardust poll IMO.

guys plz plz plz do a Radiohead poll or maybe VU

The extended reveal of ballot/email polls brings a whole nother social dynamic and depth to the discussion that radio button polls can't touch. The difference between a laundry-room quickie and an all-night tantric mind-melt. Even the Beatles, who have been polled to death, will probably bring some fresh discussion to the board.

Mr. Patrick Batman (WmC), Sunday, 19 June 2011 15:51 (twelve years ago) link

yeah a new Beatles poll is definitely U+K

Shouldn't you be thumbing through MC Tunes ballots?

Ismael Klata, Sunday, 19 June 2011 16:38 (twelve years ago) link

Doesn't seem to be any ABBA option here. An ABBA poll might have been interesting.

E-mail polls could hasten the death of radio button polls on ilm. Wishful thinking, perhaps.

xxxp

can't believe the number of ballots for the Tunes poll. Gonna be some interesting results.
