I never posted my ballots, was out of town last week. Anyway i did this fast and could be better but they are ok. (btw picked Audio 2 as best song and Illmatic as best album -- all others are UNRANKED)
Biggest mistake: i should have taken It Was Written by Nas off and replaced it w/something else after I decided not to have multiples by one artist on the list...also that spot could have gone to SLICK RICK who i fucking forgot and i'm still pissed.

yeah man, honestly, when i was a kid there was this period where we basically listened to Swass by Mix-A-Lot ALL the time...you know how sometimes things get really popular at your particular school for no apparent reason? well for whatever reason pre-baby got back Mix-A-Lot like ruled my school, everyone loved the shit out of Sir.
He also should get more credit for keeping electro non-sample beats alive during that era

I also see that I have two Geto Boys albums on there, which i didn't mean to do, but that's not really bad as they are both total classics...I do like It Was Written but there's way better stuff I left off.

shit would probably cut Tical by Method Man too, though I feel that album is hella dusted and weird and underrated

Incarcerated Scarfaces - completely forgot about that song. Good lists btw.
Why so much love for Philadelphia Freeway? iirc it kind of washed over me, although admittedly its been a while since I listened.

i was surprised that there were 4 voters for this, i thought i'd probably be the only one! it's obv not perfect or anything but it's got classic singles, the pinnacle of Just Blaze and perhaps the whole post-Blueprint Roc sound, and obv if you're a Freeway stan like i am it's his best record.

9. Masta Ace – Born To Roll

Hey random question, I didn't recognize this song title, played the video and ... I know I've heard this beat and chorus hundreds of times, but with a different rapper? Not just a different track using the same sample, but a complete remake/homage/West Coast version with exactly the same chorus. I remember hearing it on the radio as a kid in Sacramento ('95-'96 seems right), but I'm thinking a kind of nasally, animated, not otherwise known iirc, almost B-Real sounding dude? Can't seem to find anything supporting this idea online though. You're from the Bay, right, Spottie? Am I just crazy/remembering it wrong?

Re: Masta Ace – Born To Roll
Grew up in Salinas, about 2 hours south. This track you speak of sounds kinda familiar but nothing else coming to mind, I honestly think this might be the only version. Born To Roll completely crossed over into the bay scene due to that beat, which has a very distinct west coast slap to it. I knew the track around 94-95, it was pretty prominent up and down the west coast. I had no idea Masta Ace was an east coast dude until years later. Sittin On Chrome is such a weird album for that reason, a mixture of west-coast melodic slaps and east coast boom bap.

Probably not much help, its still very possible that this other track exists that you're thinking of.

Also, for the record, as far as bass-lines go:
Born To Roll > (bigger than) Hip Hop

it's kind of an amazing record, like someone so associated with golden age NYC stuff did a super west coast record all of a sudden

too many arrows there imo
Agree with all of this. Ive always kind of lumped Disposable Arts & LHS together as equals, but its been a while since I listened to either.
