I had about 10 LL singles on my first draft, can’t remember how many I cut it down to
Likewise.

Its all good, Pillbox; there's a few songs that made it that I'd given up on, so I won't stress too much over HOTP.
Gave a good amount of points to "Made You Look"; would love to see that place...

This list is killer so far.. I have high expectations for top 25.

Would be amazed if Push It didn't place
this more of a club/dance song to me, is there even rapping on it?
There's some rapping in it, though less than in other Salt-n-Pepa singles. But "Push It" is electro, and old-school electro is quite obviously part of hip hop, so it certainly deserves to be in the top 100.
50-25 looks pretty awesome, the only tunes among those I don't care about are Eminem and Beastie Boys. Was surprised to see how low "I Got 5 on It" and "California Love" placed, I thought the former was a lock for the top 20 and the latter for the top 10. "California Love" is certainly one of those tunes I never get bored of, no matter how ubiquitous it is. Does anyone know why they put the inferior remix on All on Eyez on Me instead of the original version?
I'd be shocked if "Who Am I? (What's My Name?)" and "Drop It Like It's Hot" didn't make it to the top 100, so Snoop must have two singles in the top 25. As much as I love Wu-Tang, I do hope they won't win this poll as well, that'd be boring. Especially since their best single ("I Can't Go to Sleep") placed so low.
― Tuomas, Friday, 10 June 2011 07:09 (thirteen years ago) link
'Triumph' is their best though I don't think it'll win. 'Protect Ya Neck' might. I'd be surprised if either doesn't place.
― Ismael Klata, Friday, 10 June 2011 07:36 (thirteen years ago) link
triumph blows imo

so few actual good verses
― flopson, Friday, 10 June 2011 09:07 (thirteen years ago) link
I've always wondered about "Protect Ya Neck": it sounds so much like a Muggs beat that it can't be a coincidence... I know RZA collaborated with Muggs later on, but has he ever mentioned how much his initial sound owed to him?
― Tuomas, Friday, 10 June 2011 09:09 (thirteen years ago) link
"Triumph" is pretty great, but I agree that not all of the verses are that good... Though Deck's, GZA's & Masta Killah's are ones for the ages.
― Tuomas, Friday, 10 June 2011 09:11 (thirteen years ago) link
I am pulling my pollmaster card with the 5 way tie, as 2 of the records are wack as hell and one of them isn't even hip-hop (rmde ilm)
I'm guessing the record in question is 'I Luv U' which is a shame because I was rather looking forward to the explosion of butthurt that would be provoked by that placing in the top 20.
― Matt DC, Friday, 10 June 2011 09:31 (thirteen years ago) link
My guess is that the wack record is something by Dizzee Rascal and the non-hip hop tune is "Rapture".
― Tuomas, Friday, 10 June 2011 09:32 (thirteen years ago) link
even the inspectah deck verse is whatever to me now, used to love it tho
― flopson, Friday, 10 June 2011 09:35 (thirteen years ago) link
ha it isn't dizzee or blondie.

Isn't the problem with Rapture, not that it doesn't contain rapping but the exact opposite - that it contains the worst rapping ever committed to tape?
Top Five prediction (unranked): The Message - Tunes Splits The Atom - C.R.E.A.M. - T.R.O.Y. - Regulate - The Only Rhyme That Bites

I didn't mention "G Thang" because it's a Dr. Dre song, not Snoop song. Obviously that one'll be in the top 20 too. Not sure about "Gin & Juice" though... In Finland at least, "Who am I?" was clearly the biggest hit from Doggystyle, and it's the tune from his debut that still gets played the most. Maybe it's different in the US, though?
― Tuomas, Friday, 10 June 2011 11:24 (thirteen years ago) link
What the heck are your second and sixth predictions, I've never even heard of those?
― Tuomas, Friday, 10 June 2011 11:26 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah Doggystyle singles are definitely perceived differently in the US than in Finland

hope Mama Said Knock You Out and It Was A Good Day made it. slim chances for New Jacks Hustler unfortunately.

xxp MC Tunes, no-mark Mancunian baggy MC who rapped (badly) over samples of Stone Roses and 808 State records- I think Doran is, in the vernacular, "having a laugh".

Is that the highest Outkast then? Wouldn't rule out Ms Jackson appearing but probably not with Bombs Over Baghdad so low.
― Matt DC, Friday, 10 June 2011 11:46 (thirteen years ago) link
Doran should be happy we at least got a song where a rapper refers to his "bum"
― some dude, Friday, 10 June 2011 11:48 (thirteen years ago) link
Wouldn't it be fun if "Hey Ya" placed? Then we could have a really great argument about what's hip hop and what's not.

Sorry Tuomas. It's wishful thinking. My actual prediction is The Message - Bring Forth The Guillotine - T.R.O.Y. - C.R.E.A.M. - 20 Seconds To Comply - Regulate
