my experience of rap was changed forever when I saw "rock box" on a video jukebox at an amusement park in NJ in '84, kinda crazy to think there are *4 years* between that and straight outta compton, in 4 years that shit went from the most groundbreakingest of shit to sounding old + tired #hiphoplife

CHALLOPS ALERT but I find Run DMC unbearably corny

^^^best two non rae verses on The W. And fucking amazing. Almost enough to make The W's filler disappear.

Love Wu-Tang, love Isaac Hayes, but I've always found this overrated. If I want lachyrmose Ghostface I go for All That I Got Is You. If I want a Walk on By sample I go for Hood Took Me Under.

i LOVE rae's verse in this though. might start a thread called "rappers getting so emotional it kicks them off their flow"

Run DMC were corny. I mean, they wore Adidas without the laces and made a big deal about it. And their cadence was clunky even by 80s standards. BUT they were loveable little scamps.
― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:27 (twelve years ago) link
zach that track is just ghost & rza. no rae.
shit meant RZA not rae
i make this mistake constantly

Challop (?): In 1984, 99 Problems would've been a rap song but in 2004 it was a pop song. Maybe. I don't know. I didn't think about this very long before posting it.

nice little rock-rap run

Was "99 Problems" a big pop hit or something? It only seems to have this weird cult around it on the internet tbh

like I don't remember "99 Problems" being so ubiquitous when The Black Album dropped, it was all about "Dirt On Your Shoulder"
― The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:34 (twelve years ago) link
best black album mashup was "99 problems" with "99 luft balloons." i grew much more accustomed to it than the original.

99 problems was huge over here, so maybe blame britishers. but jay's hardest breaks have always been big here (can i get a >>> hard knock life for example) and add in the dizzee jack, it was bound to happen

I'm just glad "rebel" placed, I kinda feel like that one gets lost in the shuffle of all the great stuff they did at the time
when that thing hit in summer of '87 it was another oh wow game has changed moment, today's results are memory lane up in here

i definitely heard a couple rap stations blasting "99 Problems" the weekend the album dropped. but yeah the stature it has compared to Jay's other singles among critics etc. is ridic.

my turn for challops: "Hypnotize" is my least favorite Biggie single
Hating on run dmc is corny
― lebroner (D-40), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:42 (twelve years ago) link
99 problems is corny
hypnotize is probably my favorite big single after maybe "one more chance" remix
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:43 (twelve years ago) link
i also feel that way about hypnotize
― steady sbobbin (symsymsym), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:43 (twelve years ago) link
Hypnotize is dope but "least favorite biggie single" is like ultimate narc of small diffs right?
― lebroner (D-40), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:43 (twelve years ago) link
"99 problems" is not even in the top 99 jigga songs

mtv sort of tried to turn the vid for 99 problems into a controversy thing by having serious-face kurt loder introduce it as being controversial
didn't work/was not controversial

I had no idea 'I Can't Go To Sleep' was a single. I like it better as part of the album I think, it's a bit too emotional to stand on its own. Payoff is still killer though.
― Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:46 (twelve years ago) link
yeah I love that they had the brass balls to release it as a single tho
― no serenade no fire brigade just a trypophobia (Edward III), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:46 (twelve years ago) link
i don't think alive-biggie ever put out anything that wasn't 100% perfect ('miss u' maybe) so yeah its a case of arguing over some petty difference shit.

not really a correct usage of the term -- but yeah saying it's the weakest of like half a dozen classic songs is not a strong diss
