"Rock The Bells" also comically low

i personally like these things more when the emphasis is on singles over album tracks but "Gimme The Loot" is pretty unfuckwithable

Gimme The Loot is still p much the most shocking thing hiphop has done

Surprised at 'Paid In Full' being so low, it's always had an aura of untouchable genius about it (possibly cos of the Coldcut remix, ironically enough)
― Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 12:47 (thirteen years ago) link
Speaking of that, did the votes for "Paid in Full" include the ones for the Coldcut remix? Or did no one vote for that?
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 12:48 (thirteen years ago) link
Paid in Full too low (though not one of my two Eric B & Rakim picks so there you go)
― Strictly vote-splitting (DL), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 12:50 (thirteen years ago) link
I thought I had 'The Show' as my number #1, but I was obviously mistaken lol It was definitely either that or 'Shook Ones Part II' I think.
― pandemic, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 12:55 (thirteen years ago) link
Rakim definitely will suffer from vote-splitting -- i voted for "I Know You Got Soul" but it could've been any nymber of other songs and i'm never totally clear on where the consensus lies with his big singles
― Shippie_Ipley_Dope (some dude), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 13:04 (thirteen years ago) link
71 my ass. 7 minutes of madness should be #1. im biased.
― Bert Macklin, F.B.I. (thebingo), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 13:11 (thirteen years ago) link
I always thought Follow The Leader was the one rated the highest.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 13:25 (thirteen years ago) link
I saw Rakim live a few weeks ago. Was surprised that he opted for the Coldcut mix of "Paid In Full", given that Eric B hated it. He encored with an acapella "Follow The Leader", which was just stunning.
― mike t-diva, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 13:45 (thirteen years ago) link
if he cared what Eric thinks wouldn't he still be with Eric?
― Shippie_Ipley_Dope (some dude), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 13:56 (thirteen years ago) link
I just assumed that they'd have been on the same page Coldcut-wise, back in the day. Maybe they were. Maybe he's changed.
― mike t-diva, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 14:14 (thirteen years ago) link
The legacy of "Return of the Crooklyn Dodgers" was probably hurt by it only appearing on a soundtrack album--but IMO it has the best Premier beat, a great Chubb Rock verse, solid OC verse, and Jeru's greatest verse.
― President Keyes, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 14:20 (thirteen years ago) link
The Show and Paid in Full placing way too low imho

Wasn't my vote for Eric B & Rakim (Juice) or Coldcut (More Beats + Pieces) although I voted for the album. Talking of which, aren't all these laughably low placings actually down to simple old fashioned vote splitting rather than voter imbecility? Just a thought...
― PG Harpy (Doran), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 15:36 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah vote splitting is gonna hurt ppl w/ lotsa good singles I think
― no serenade no fire brigade just a trypophobia (Edward III), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 15:46 (thirteen years ago) link
So happy Jesus the Pimp made it--one of my original noms I wasn't sure would get any support.
Not a wack song so far. If we keep this up this might be the ILX poll GOAT. (Though a hoy hoy saying "i've genuinely just checked the top 100 and LOL" at the top makes me nervous.)
― Parenthetical Grillz, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 15:58 (thirteen years ago) link
Also, it's impossible to say whether or not something's too low until the rest of the list goes up. "The Show" and "Rock the Bells" are classics, but there's still plenty of classics out there.
(And it's not like poll results ever really make sense anyway.)
― Parenthetical Grillz, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 16:01 (thirteen years ago) link
I guess high placings for crossover singles like '99 Problems', 'Hip Hop' (Dead Prez), 'Get Yr Freak On' and some arguably 'cheese' platters like 'Push It', 'Jump Around' and 'It Takes Two' may be on the cards.
FWIW I like all of the above songs and voted for all of them bar House Of Pain and Salt n'Peppa.
― PG Harpy (Doran), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 16:34 (thirteen years ago) link

my experience of rap was changed forever when I saw "rock box" on a video jukebox at an amusement park in NJ in '84, kinda crazy to think there are *4 years* between that and straight outta compton, in 4 years that shit went from the most groundbreakingest of shit to sounding old + tired #hiphoplife
