c'mon guys are we still mad about pomplamoose, they're just havin' fun and makin' music and OH GOD I HATE THEM SO MUCH.

Are these guys Mormon?
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 3 June 2011 22:12 (twelve years ago) link
oh i see.. nobody mentioned them so they didn't turn up in search.. glad they've been dealt with. my friend also mentions he prefers the Karmin version to the Chris Brown original. Not sure how to deal with that.
― Kerm, Friday, 3 June 2011 22:13 (twelve years ago) link
karmin help put pomplamoose in perspective, cuz they're just plain bad. awkward, devoid of charm, unpleasant sounding. helps you realize that the moose are at least good at what they do, perhaps very good. which makes it harder to hate them, which only makes me hate them all the more, and god please just make it stop

in the early days of this thread i was trying to articulate why i was cool with pomplamoose/enjoyed their original songs, and i appreciate the kind of "contextualizing of the vitriol" you did up there, contenderizer. i thought i'd take another whack at it.
i think for me personally there are a couple of things at play. the first is just that i have a pretty limited musical sensibility; i don't have anywhere NEAR the prior listening experience of most ilm folx, in breadth or in depth, so when i heard something kind of light and pleasant with vague cat power-y vocals, i didn't hear "derivative" or "falls short of X, Y, and Z" like many people on this thread did. at the same time, and i think this was even more important, i never saw the fabled Hyundai commercial until well after the fact, and whenever they'd start talking in their videos i'd turn it off, so the worst parts of their schtick didn't register for me at all.
also, though, i think ilx generally has it out for a certain kind of tweeness that i'm surrounded by a lot in other online communities, particular tumblr. it's this childlike, lacy, femme, pastel aesthetic where people take pictures of cupcakes sitting on doilies and girls in floral dresses standing in the grass. the etsy-seller aesthetic, i guess. we had a thread decrying it a couple of months ago, but since a lot of people i know (partic. women involved in online activism) really embrace and enjoy it, it doesn't bother me. and it surprised me how violently repulsed people were to it in both this thread and that other one i mentioned!
but i think you hit upon the real reason i'm okay with pomplamoose, contenderizer, which is that i have a massive crush on steve burns from blues clues. clearly this is all just sublimated sexual desire.
― truf bob-omb (reddening), Friday, 3 June 2011 22:34 (twelve years ago) link
I'm thinking that without the visuals (muppet dude, frozen stare girl) the Moose wouldn't be anything other than a million other indie bands over the years. God help me, but girl Moose occasionally sings a bit like Annette Peacock, and I'm sitting in a concrete bunker to protect me from responses to that, but it's really true (has been nagging at me a while, trying to figure out who she sounds sort of like).
Doesn't change the fact that watching them is really, really painful... The girl in Karmin keeps her eyes closed most of the time, and that makes all the difference.
Osmonds were Mormon too, but didn't stop them from making some of the best heavy rock in history, so that's not an excuse.

also this reminds me that steve burns went on to do a mild twee album with the flaming lips called "songs for dustmites":

Jesus, don't drag Steve Burns into this. He was a genius, and the "Magenta Gets Glasses" episode is the ultimate in non-sublimated sexual desire. The bit where he looks at the "centerfold" in the eye doctor's waiting room with Miranda is one of the great moments in television...

Contenderizer, thanks for such a well-articulated reply. I have my grumpy-old-man-prematurely moments to be sure, but I like cute things. I like home-knit scarves and cupcakes and things that sweet people make by hand. I love kitties and kindness and hugging and being good to people. The thing is, this is NOT that. It feels like these people are co-opting elements of that culture to a creepy degree, but when it comes down to it they're just shilling. Shilling themselves, shilling Hyundais, whatever the fuck. They seem incapable of NOT being muggingly hammy and sales-pitchy. You hit it on the head with this: "i don't want to be sold, don't need whatever it is they're shilling." They're so goddamned enamored with their own perceived cuteness and quirkiness (hence my initial quoting of Jon's point about her being told how special and cute she was a few too many times throughout her young life), and that whole self-consciously quirky/cutesy thing ALWAYS grates on me as one of the most insincere modes of being one can exist in. And coupled with the whole corporate shilling angle, it just gets real nasty.
― Clarke B., Friday, 3 June 2011 23:41 (twelve years ago) link
that's not quite it, is it? because actual sesame street shilling has a different flavor to it:
