so far my fave albums by women this year would be pj harvey and britney. but i will definitely check out the new beyonce too when it comes out. i couldn't really listen to that last tegan & sara clip up there. didn't sound so good to me. they are no veruca salt.

scott seward, Thursday, 19 May 2011 20:27 (thirteen years ago) link

still can't get over that tune yards stuff i was listening to the other night. ouch. kinda captivating in a trainwreck kinda way though. i'm being nice and not going on that thread. aren't i nice? people seem to like it. she had, like, 300 people at the flywheel last week or whenever! that place never sells out for anything.

scott seward, Thursday, 19 May 2011 20:32 (thirteen years ago) link

i was actually looking fwd to tune-yards because people whose taste i trust recommended her to me but it's SO SO BAD

that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Thursday, 19 May 2011 20:33 (thirteen years ago) link

you should check out the katy b album, scott (i can't remember if you liked "katy on a mission" or not)

that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Thursday, 19 May 2011 20:34 (thirteen years ago) link

I dunno how I feel about tune-yards - seems like there will be something interesting happening immediately followed by something unforgiveable in the stuff I've heard.

man there have REALLY been a lot of twin-girl acts over the years haven't there? I smell a poll

finger-wagging is never a good look when it comes to aesthetics.

i realize that these arguments about privilege or whatever seem to be rolling right off your back, but saying "u should be talking about the AESTHETICS" is a privileged position! talking about the aesthetics of this means you are able to listen to it with a degree of dispassion, which is not always going to be possible when you're listening to something that literally invokes a feeling of dread/anger/fear in you. i don't want to go into a whole "this is the list of people in my life who have been sexually assaulted," but that list is longer than it has any fucking right to be, and in a society where that list is allowed to get so long, cool new music that makes a point to be unapologetically rapey can fucking withstand some condemnation from the people who are most likely to be assaulted.

scott seward, Thursday, 19 May 2011 21:06 (thirteen years ago) link

they switched management, farted around for a bit, then split to pursue solo projects

I HAVE ISSUES (DJP), Thursday, 19 May 2011 21:07 (thirteen years ago) link

excitebikable boy (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 19 May 2011 21:09 (thirteen years ago) link

wasn't it their therapist that got tATu together in the first place...?

excitebikable boy (Drugs A. Money), Thursday, 19 May 2011 21:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Ivan Shapovalov and his friend/business partner Alexander Voitinskyi developed plans to create a musical project in Russia. With this idea in mind, Shapovalov and Voitinskyi organized auditions in Moscow in early 1999 for teenage female vocalists. By the end of auditioning, the partners narrowed their search down to ten girls, including ex-members of the group Neposedi, Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova. Both girls stood out among the others, especially because of their appearance and vocal experience, but the producers decided to start with 14 year-old Katina, who sang "It Must Have Been Love" by Roxette. Katina began recording demos, including "Yugoslavia", a song about NATO bombing of Yugoslavia.[5][6] After the demos were cut, Shapovalov insisted that another girl be added to the project. Thus, in late 1999, 14 year old Volkova was added to the group.

lex, why are you so obsessed with xl's label head? he made a pretty good deal aka did his job

i'm not obsessed? he's a pretty revered figure in the industry though, xl often (rightly) held up as an ideal sort of label, but it's to the extent that it seems lots of critical faculties shut down whenever it does something. and if we're holding anyone up to scrutiny for giving tyler's lyrics a free pass, surely he should be as well as any critics, given his reputation (ie not like any old major label head just out to make profit, he and his label trade on their ethical rep quite a bit)
