I love how much good music is coming out of this project! Esp. since it initially seemed like it was going to be a one-off thing.

i still don't know how i slept so much on the switch up on "strobe lights"

J0rdan S., Monday, 9 May 2011 04:59 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah the last minute of that is exquisite

diddy's obsession with sade is amaaaaazing.

One of the moments I remember feeling happiest last year was lying on a banana lounge at some "beach bar" in Nice (and paying through the nose for the privilege, as you do), getting drunk on beer in the afternoon, Sade's Best Of playing on loop over the stereo. I like to think Diddy had a similar experience that inspired some of this.

Tim F, Monday, 9 May 2011 18:12 (thirteen years ago) link

this fucking album

i like sade too, so do lots of people, she had one of the best-selling albums of 2010 for fuck's sake! don't get why diddy's obsession is amazing? it just kinda puts him in the company of millions of sade fans. unless we're talking in comparison to other hip-hop artists in 2010-11, in which case he's clearly quite vocal about his love.

whenever we talk about diddy we're definitely comparing him to every other american citizen

"i'm not sure why you guys are so caught up on biggie and tupac's death? it just kinda puts them in the company of billions of dead people."

Big Boi loves Kate Bush which is always remarked upon but unlike Diddy vis a vis Sade he hasn't made direct reference to it in 3 separate tracks.

haha holy shit @ Soho "Hot Music" 'diddy remix' of hello good morning

TTDeej (D-40), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 03:09 (thirteen years ago) link

hearing T.I. rap over "Hot Music" is some kind of weird mash-up of my circa '04 music obsessions

TTDeej (D-40), Tuesday, 10 May 2011 03:10 (thirteen years ago) link

except for how the verse is terrible

this fucking album

otm

the greatest compliment i can pay this album is that it manages to elevate a straight grocery bag verse from justin timberlake into something transcendent

J0rdan S., Saturday, 14 May 2011 04:11 (thirteen years ago) link

lol i skip "shades" and "angels" and end the album at "change" and it's perfect

the greatest compliment i can pay this album is that it manages to elevate a straight grocery bag verse from justin timberlake into something transcendent

that verse is so amazing. i mean a huge part of it is the humour though, timberlake sounds like he's taking the piss out of grocery bags because we all know grocery bags are terrible, right? and the song's entire persona is this superstar who's kind of awkward on a human level

lex pretend, Saturday, 14 May 2011 07:57 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean every JT grocery bag just makes me burst out laughing

lex pretend, Saturday, 14 May 2011 07:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Yes but I don't think he's laughing.

Tim F, Saturday, 14 May 2011 07:59 (thirteen years ago) link

i think he's being intentionally ridiculous

lex pretend, Saturday, 14 May 2011 08:04 (thirteen years ago) link

like i don't think even JT thinks "we can press rewind, press rewind...VHS" is a properly great line (but it's still amazing)

lex pretend, Saturday, 14 May 2011 08:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Well I don't think he thinks it's artistry, but I think he's taking the piss out of grocery bagging either.

Somewhere in between: I think he recognises that grocery bagging is just ridiculous enough that he too can play that game.

Tim F, Saturday, 14 May 2011 08:08 (thirteen years ago) link

don't think he's taking... I mean.

Tim F, Saturday, 14 May 2011 08:09 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i'd agree w/that

lex pretend, Saturday, 14 May 2011 08:10 (thirteen years ago) link

I do agree (or at least I think this is what you're getting at) that there's a difference there which means that you don't feel like he's trying to pass off grocery bagging as great rapping, which then makes it easier to love for its ridiculousness.

Tim F, Saturday, 14 May 2011 08:12 (thirteen years ago) link

three weeks pass...

minor thing but do y'all read the lyric "I hate that you love me / so much, boy" as "I hate so much that you love me" or "I hate that you love me so much"

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:20 (thirteen years ago) link

the latter but kinda both

the smoke cloud of pure hatred (lex pretend), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 17:22 (thirteen years ago) link

no the former! look at the title of the song - it's clearly meant to be a little of the latter too as well tho

positive rapper (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 8 June 2011 19:59 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah I think it's both.

Tim F, Wednesday, 8 June 2011 21:05 (thirteen years ago) link

mostly former
