oh yeah also as far as jonas bros singles go "burnin up" >>>>>>>>>>>> "lovebug"

n/as (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 7 May 2011 03:36 (thirteen years ago) link

how was the one jonas w/ the long hair the lead singer

n/as (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 7 May 2011 03:37 (thirteen years ago) link

I prefer "White Houses" too but I guess it doesn't have quite the same universalist sweep as "A Thousand Miles".

Tim F, Saturday, 7 May 2011 03:51 (thirteen years ago) link

Somewhat inevitably, with lyrics like "My first time: hard to explain. Rush of blood, and a little bit of pain..."

Tim F, Saturday, 7 May 2011 03:55 (thirteen years ago) link

thats another 1 where im like, well, those both kinda suck

geeks, dweebs, nerds & lames (D-40), Saturday, 7 May 2011 04:05 (thirteen years ago) link

not to be defensive, but i am curious what exactly this means -- in comparison to the other lists i've done for other genres, in comparison to what your personal top 50 would be, etc.?

― ORIGINAL DUDE (some dude), Saturday, May 7, 2011 1:29 AM (2 hours ago) Bookmark

No complains in terms of broadness. And, yes it is al precisely what I would call pop. I would just have picked different songs, even from the same artists. So yes, very few of these would be in my own top 50.

Some tracks that would be on my list (aside from some that people have mentioned already)

Nelly Furtado - Maneater
Kylie - I Believe In You, Giving You Up
Beyonce - Crazy In Love

At least one Sugababes track, at least one Girls Aloud track can't decide now.

daavid, Saturday, 7 May 2011 04:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh and Jordin Sparks - No Air

daavid, Saturday, 7 May 2011 04:46 (thirteen years ago) link

stacir orrico - more to life

OMG yes!

"more to life" is okay but c'mon if you're gonna give orrico a place there's no way it can't be "stuck" (which is SO AMAZING)

lex pretend, Saturday, 7 May 2011 06:49 (thirteen years ago) link

"Stuck" seems clunky to me, I see how it's supposed to work but I don't think it does. "More To Life" has that whole bittersweet anthemism going.

Tim F, Saturday, 7 May 2011 06:54 (thirteen years ago) link

i kind of feel "more to life" is a bit trite and i'm not interested in the xtianity of it all - "stuck" pretty much exactly captures that high school crush feel that's the linchpin of the genre

different singles by the same artists i'd have picked instead -

kelly clarkson - "behind these hazel eyes" and "never again"
xtina aguilera - "can't hold us down" and "ain't no other man" (i do really like "fighter" and "beautiful" though)
avril lavigne - "i'm with you"
ashlee simpson - "boyfriend"!!!!!! or "little miss obsessive". though those aside it's just struck me that all my favourite ashlee cuts are deep tracks ("love me for me", "coming back for more", "i am me" etc)
and it wasn't a single but "don't talk" by vanessa hudgens is so far above the rest of her discography - i think i've repped it here before but anyone with even vague #cassiefanclub predilections needs to hear it asap

lex pretend, Saturday, 7 May 2011 06:57 (thirteen years ago) link

i might vote for "come clean" here. hilary had several total classics in that decade, "beat of my heart" and "wake up" are amazing too

lex pretend, Saturday, 7 May 2011 06:59 (thirteen years ago) link

Fergalicious is outstanding - probably the best thing Will.i.am has ever done. Never really liked Glamorous until the Space Cowboy remix.

Top ten from the list:

1. Toxic
2. Fergalicious
3. Untouched
4. Pop
5. La Tortura
6. Bad Romance
7. Sk8er Boi
8. Hot 'n' Cold
9. London Bridge
10. La La

I LOVE BELARUS (ShariVari), Saturday, 7 May 2011 07:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Voted for "He Loves You Not" because it's the perfect blend time of that early Max Martin early 00s sound (with the dramatic stabs etc) and lyrical content/performance of a song. The girls in Dream encapsulate the required aggressive and possessive teenage girl voice brilliantly with the right mix of confidence, anger and sexuality.

"Love At First Sight" is just pop's take on all those Stardust/Modjo style one hit wonders and that's a sound I'll never tire of it, so it was a close call.

SOMEWHERE WE WENT WRONG
WE WERE ONCE SO STRONG

uberweiss, Saturday, 7 May 2011 07:59 (thirteen years ago) link

the verses on "Promiscuous" are some of the dumbest lyrics and most awkward vocal performances ever, it's just a mess.

ORIGINAL DUDE (some dude), Saturday, 7 May 2011 11:01 (thirteen years ago) link

by "not a strong list" I simply meant that not many songs here move me. where's Justin for a start (the older one)? and (thought I'm not sure about her status on ilm) Lily Allen?

gospodin simmel, Saturday, 7 May 2011 11:07 (thirteen years ago) link

Justin and later N Sync were on the R&B lists

ORIGINAL DUDE (some dude), Saturday, 7 May 2011 11:10 (thirteen years ago) link

and Lily Allen's status on ilm is good, her status with me personally is very very bad

ORIGINAL DUDE (some dude), Saturday, 7 May 2011 11:11 (thirteen years ago) link

fair enough

gospodin simmel, Saturday, 7 May 2011 11:56 (thirteen years ago) link

the lack of t.A.T.u. is quite worrying

uberweiss, Saturday, 7 May 2011 12:32 (thirteen years ago) link

the whole tatu thing kind of passed me by somehow, i heard their only US hit maybe twice

ORIGINAL DUDE (some dude), Saturday, 7 May 2011 13:40 (thirteen years ago) link

Someday" is the only other big '00s one though

This was summer '99!

I don't see this as "going against the canon" quite as much as a few odd selections which have been mostly hated on, such as "La La" or Paris Hilton..

Voted Kylie obv.

billstevejim, Saturday, 7 May 2011 15:02 (thirteen years ago) link

PS What canon? Not enough time has passed..

billstevejim, Saturday, 7 May 2011 15:02 (thirteen years ago) link

I think what I dislike most about "Toxic" is that it's so hugely adored when it's actually not even in her 20 best songs.

billstevejim, Saturday, 7 May 2011 15:05 (thirteen years ago) link

well i just hate Britney and don't think she has 20 listenable songs so

some dude, Saturday, 7 May 2011 15:07 (thirteen years ago) link

exactly!

billstevejim, Saturday, 7 May 2011 15:13 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah needs "All the Things She Said"

Also:
JoJo - "Leave (Get Out)" and "Too Little Too Late"
City High - "What Would You Do"
3LW - "No More" and "Playas Gon Play"
The Fray - "Over My Head (Cable Car)"
VV Brown - "Shark in the Water"
Rooney - "Blueside"
Jimmy Eat World - "The Middle"
SoulDecision - "Faded" and "Ooh It's Kinda Crazy"
Daniel Bedingfield - "If You're Not the One"
Macy Gray - "I Try"
Shaggy - "It Wasn't Me"
Avril Lavigne - "I'm With You"
Sonique - "It Feels So Good"
S Club 7 - "Never Had a Dream Come True"
Michelle Branch - "Everywhere"

Oh, and I'm voting for Demi.

p.s. Al, are we on the same page re: Hot Chelle Rae's "Tonight Tonight"? SO AWESOME

love you like a frat kid loves Cake (Tape Store), Saturday, 7 May 2011 16:14 (thirteen years ago) link

jimmy eat world was on the rock list, tho "the middle" is better than whichever song al put on there (i forget)

can't believe i forgot "over my head", that would be in the top 10 of my list -- also good look on city high

& you know where i stand on rooney

n/as (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 7 May 2011 16:16 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, basically early 00s TRL >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Sara Bareilles

love you like a frat kid loves Cake (Tape Store), Saturday, 7 May 2011 16:17 (thirteen years ago) link

"love song" is one of my least favorite songs of the decade tbh

n/as (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 7 May 2011 16:20 (thirteen years ago) link

gee gee gee gee baby baby baby

uberweiss, Saturday, 7 May 2011 16:33 (thirteen years ago) link

^ Greatest of them all.

abcfsk, Saturday, 7 May 2011 16:37 (thirteen years ago) link

where is the limp bizkit?? no "rollin" or "my way"?

can't tell if k3v is kidding or what

i definitely like "Too Little Too Late," "Over My Head" and "I'm With You" enough that they could've made the list.

some dude, Saturday, 7 May 2011 16:59 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm serious - i thought you liked some of their singles? i like those songs

i'm looking at limp bizkit's wiki page and i'm shocked at how less popular they were than i thought. they never went platinum? "rollin" topped out at 65, "my way" at 75, and "nookie" at 80? why is my perception of their popularity so distorted?

because of trl/mtv?

n/as (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 7 May 2011 17:06 (thirteen years ago) link

oh the riaa certifications are for the singles, not the albums

xp yeah that's what i think too

yeah they were doing baseball numbers with album sales but i can't believe they never had a top 40 hit

it's awesome that some of you like "Over My Head"! i played the shit out of that in my car during 2006

markers, Saturday, 7 May 2011 17:46 (thirteen years ago) link

over my head is great

johnny crunch, Saturday, 7 May 2011 17:59 (thirteen years ago) link

this is kind of shocking to me too

TTDeej (D-40), Saturday, 7 May 2011 18:32 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i mean they were all over mtv/the box, namedropped in "the real slim shady", etc

guess they're more of an 'albums artist', lol

yes and i cant think of anyone more worthy of a "50 best pop singles of the 00's" list than the durst

billstevejim, Saturday, 7 May 2011 19:03 (thirteen years ago) link

yes let's focus on the artistry of hilary duff

limp bizkit had some dope singles fuiud

if my day just keeps going this way i just might break something tonight \(^o^)/

markers, Saturday, 7 May 2011 19:14 (thirteen years ago) link

some dope guilty pleasure singles, yes.. all of which were released between 98 and 99

billstevejim, Saturday, 7 May 2011 19:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Limp Bizkit had MTV and rock radio sewn up, but never really got top 40 burn iirc.
