Triptych is a shoe-in for No. 1 next year.

I had L&C in fourth place so couldn't have artificially propelled them to no.1 even if I'd had some sort of psychic knowledge of the points totals - a lucky escape for democracy

Indie used to mean "independent" as in independent label, and was quickly adopted by critics and fans to mean a certain brand of alternative rock that didn't fit into punk or post-punk or MOR. But this was back in the stone-age and things have moved on and stuff that uses all those indie tropes is now released on huge labels while plenty of commercial pop comes out on so-called independents. There's no rule, and there shouldn't be a rule because music doesn't conform to the same parameters as it did in 1986. As far as I see it, "indie" has now become lazy, derogatory shorthand for "music made by white people".

like metal and hip hop, indie is a culture. maybe that's another way to spin your closing statement.

imo, indie is best described in terms of its audience. the genre evolves to reflect the shifting interests of the indie audience. this is why emeralds and sun araw seem at least as "indie" to me as they do psyche. they put out records on labels that indie people follow, they get tipped in indie blogs, and they draw an audience that's strongly interested in other sorts of indie-identified music.

i think for example of phantom tollbooth, an instrumental prog band from the late 80s. they were at the time considered an indie band while univers zero were not. why not? well, phantom tollbooth put out records on homestad, not just an independent label, but perhaps the defining american "indie" label of the era. they attracted an audience that were at least as interested in other indie bands like sonic youth and live skull as they were in textbook prog. they were written up in indie-oriented publications and given featured placement in indie-oriented shops. i mean, they were prog, no argument there, but they were also indie. indie overlaps with everything, or at least has the potential to do so.

i'm satisfied with this anthropological definition of the genre, but i can see why others might not be.

Now to spend the rest of the year investigating the vast majority of albums on this poll that I've never heard at all. Looking forward to next year when I will vote for their follow-up (lesser) albums.

Kind of surprised about the low placings for Mount Kimbie and Gonjasufi. Wasn't into them all that much myself, but thought they had more of a following here?

Consensus was that the Mount Kimbie wasn't that great, I think (I considered voting for it but didn't). Not sure about Gonjasufi.

Gonjasufi did terribly - only got about two votes. People I respect like it but I never got around to hearing it.

Btw "Sex Intelligent"+remix are the best songs on Love King anyone who feels differently can jump off a fucking cliff. :P

'panties to the side' is the only thing ruining the flow of the album imo

this is why i love the love king and why it deserves such high placement, imo. i fw all these tracks. it's got it's ups and downs, but there's nothing i'd straight up cut from the album. though i voted for "yamaha" and do honestly love that song, i only did so because i knew it was the ILX pick. personally, i prefer "sex intelligent", "FILA", "abyss", "turnt out", and even (i admit it) "panties to the side".

LJ- Listen to Baduizm and Mama's Gun. They are more trad* than the New Emrykah records but maybe even better.

*Trad in the same way that The-Dream is trad. Understanding the box to really be able to think outside it sorta thing.

I couldn't get on board with Badu till Worldwide Underground - that was the path to New Amerykah Part 1 for me.

Yeah thanks to the poll organisers, good list on the whole, definitely need to listen to the Agalloch record (probably a few other thigs too). L&C was a real shock #2, quite liked it but haven't played it in a while so I'll remedy that then I guess.

I dont look at ILM very much, I missed this poll completely (and tbh dont often vote in polls), but yay at least it was repped! My fave album of last year. Technically it barely scraped in, its rest of world release is officially this month.

My top ten was very hivemindful this year - Yelawolf, Diddy, VW, Taylor, The-Dream, Glasser, L&C, E-40 - only things that didn't place were Hot Toddy and Jacka & Laroo.
