firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 21:29 (eighteen years ago) link

Very nice - pic of birds on front of slideover cardboard thing, decent booklet, good Arthur photo. Only weirdness--inner tray completely blank, even though visible bcz of 2CD box. (This refers to Euro vers. on Rough Trade--Yank box may be diff.)

Stylus review.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 21:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Nice font on the cover too, for those who care about that sort of thing.

Ian Scuffing (Ian Scuffing), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 21:54 (eighteen years ago) link

All the images are from AR's archive material that directly relate to the music compiled on the album. Thank my buddy Steven Miglio for putting it all together. He came up with the font. We left the inner tray card blank as we all agreed we thought we had said enough.
Thanks for all the positive comments. I am dearly chuffed.

hi steve,

don't answer this if it puts you in a bad position, but what happened with the 24-24 rights? I came across that bootleg you mentioned upthread a few years ago, I thought it was an original and nearly wet my pants.

btw, first thought is another masterful job.

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 13:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Is First Thought going to end up on iTunes eventually? The rest of the Audika CDs are at the moment.

Brakhage (brakhage), Monday, 24 April 2006 18:03 (eighteen years ago) link

I'll just join the chorus here - First Thought is really fantastic. Picked it up this weekend and am very happy!

TRG (TRG), Monday, 24 April 2006 18:28 (eighteen years ago) link

brakhage, you can get it at bleep or at emusic.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Monday, 24 April 2006 20:05 (eighteen years ago) link

I forgot about Bleep, thanks - checking it out, I love it based on the previews

Brakhage (brakhage), Monday, 24 April 2006 22:11 (eighteen years ago) link

It will be on i Tunes shortly, maybe by tomorrow.

Steve Knutson, Tuesday, 25 April 2006 01:34 (eighteen years ago) link

It's cool, I dedided I wanted the physical CD anyway. Excellent job! (Unfortunately one of the CDs is defective so the last couple tracks are unplayable - these things happen, I'll see about getting another copy.) Glad you're getting exposure through all the digital-download shops.

I note that the Springfield project is listed in the 'more by Arthur' bit in the liner notes … can't wait for that.

Brakhage (brakhage), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 15:30 (eighteen years ago) link

This is the best thing I've bought all year. Thanks for putting so much time into this project.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:48 (eighteen years ago) link

gorgeous.

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 6 May 2006 00:02 (eighteen years ago) link

Is the Soul Jazz "The World of Arthur Russell" comp supposed to come with liner notes?

I just got the 3xLP in the mail but there were no liner notes and that doesn't seem right for a Soul Jazz release...

Ok I've been on an Arthur listening jag since this thread revival and now I've tears in my eyes. I'll love you forever Arthur.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Wednesday, 23 August 2006 22:38 (seventeen years ago) link

what do people think of the dfa mix of "springfield"?

rmd (dj gauge transformation), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 03:04 (seventeen years ago) link

We just got this in at the station I dj for, and I gotta say that I might prefer the Arthur orginal. It feels more funky. Regardless, the entire release is another sweeping victory.

matt2 (matt2), Wednesday, 6 September 2006 13:19 (seventeen years ago) link

i haven't heard the original, i've only caught the mix on beats in space. i can't wait 'til the release gets uhh... released, i really want to hear the original, and the corn stuff too, it all looks great. steve knutson, you are doing the lord's work.

rmd (dj gauge transformation), Thursday, 7 September 2006 02:03 (seventeen years ago) link

steve, when does the springfield mix get released commercially?

mr. brojangles (sanskrit), Thursday, 7 September 2006 02:47 (seventeen years ago) link

dfa remix surprisingly unoffensive

PARTYMAN (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 7 September 2006 05:13 (seventeen years ago) link

SPRINGFIELD will be released on CD next week on 9/12.
I'll also have it out on double 12" vinyl no later than 9/26. Different cover art on each configuration. The CD has one extra track, a previously unreleased version of Hiding Your Present From You from CORN. The DFA are my peeps, so I'm really happy with what thet came up with. Just so you all know, I gave them almost FIVE HOURS of tracking, and they put the whole thing together, which is mighty. All the sounds and production are from Arthur. On the remix the DFA overdubs are really minimal, and I begged them to do more. Anyway, I'm really proud of it, and I hope people will like the whole album.

Steve Knutson (steven Knutson), Friday, 8 September 2006 20:01 (seventeen years ago) link

steve, is this coming out in the UK next week too?

jed_ (jed), Friday, 8 September 2006 21:45 (seventeen years ago) link

NO UK release. U.S. & Japan only.

Soul Jazz shop in London will have copies the week after next, and of course on-line via almost everybody.

Steve Knutson (steven Knutson), Friday, 8 September 2006 21:51 (seventeen years ago) link

thank you.

theghostrobot (theghostrobot), Saturday, 9 September 2006 06:10 (seventeen years ago) link

i'm not feelin the beats on it. the vibe seems less arthur russell and more some kind of electro version of nervous records - which i guess is historically apropos but for me its martial quality clashes with the moebius quality of the rest of the song -- until it gets to the chorus, and then it seems right for some reason.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Saturday, 9 September 2006 11:49 (seventeen years ago) link

Steve- is the release date final? Amazon and a few other retailers still list it as 9/26...

Telephonething (Telephonething), Monday, 11 September 2006 09:48 (seventeen years ago) link

CD is out tomorrow 9/12, vinyl on 9/26

Steve Knutson (steven Knutson), Monday, 11 September 2006 12:39 (seventeen years ago) link

I like the DFA remix a lot; I like how it and the other two takes seem faithful to what I loved about listening to the mixes to "Let's Go Swimming" or "Schoolbell/Treehouse" all in a row, in terms of each one giving you a difference glimpse in on the song, with different lyrics and different elements focused on.

It's cool how the two main "Springfield" mixes sort of mirror each other too, in terms of that knotty cello (and voice?) and trombone harmony showing up late in the Arthur mix, and then popping up isolated right off the top of the DFA one (right after the drum-machine intro EQ'd all "Soon"-like). I like how the lyrics on the Arthur mix are the sexy ones, vs. the more toned-down stoic ones about riding a rollercoaster and being Superman who's never been kissed on the DFA one.

Also, hearing Arthur announce the end of the reel halfway through the first mix, combined with the sounds going on around that moment, is quite the psychedelic surprise; I love all those off-mic comments that lurk in the background in his music ("Hit it on the appropriate line!" "Punch in!" "[phone rings]"). (Yes, I am completely smitten.)

Craig Dunsmuir (Craig D.), Friday, 15 September 2006 18:48 (seventeen years ago) link

NIce, nice, nice. Lovin' the love for Arthur Russell. I've contacted you in the past Mr. Knutson about Arthur releases and you've always been very good about getting back. You are indeed doing the work of an angel. I'll be picking-up Springfield sometime this weekend at my local record store... I've got everything else you've released and some other Arthur bits here and there.

Whenever anyone asks me about an underrated or underappreciated artist of the past, without pause I say Arthur Russell.

Randall Weeber (yoyoweb), Saturday, 16 September 2006 01:40 (seventeen years ago) link

That's nice except that fuckin EVERYONE loves him now. Hey Steve! I would like to add my voice to the thankful choir on this, you rule, and thanks for doing it all on vinyl. I hold my copies of "Calling" and "First Thought" v close. Ordering "Springfield" v soon.

Meanwhile Amazon still says it's coming on the 26th and I can't for the life of me find it in a store in LA.

soooo... goood.... cannot.... stop.... playing....

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 18 September 2006 18:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Arthur wanted to be popular, so "fuckin EVERYONE loves him now" is nice to hear, but in reality overstated. I wish it were the case. Great to hear Japan is on point as they do order a TON (at least for my tiny world) of all AR titles from me. Regarding Amazon, I have no idea why they have the date wrong, but I urge you to order it from either Dusty Groove or Forced Exposure. They should have the vinyl also. Vinyl sleeve has a different picture of Arthur than the CD. The two I chose are from a dozen plus images taken by Arthur's father in Iowa. Arthur wanted a bunch of pictures taken of himself in front of various tractors for a short-lived project, The Singing Tractors. It seemed to fit the Springfield music so I went with them. Continued thanks for the positive responses.

Steve Knutson (steven Knutson), Monday, 18 September 2006 19:40 (seventeen years ago) link

It's certainly getting there. I have vague fears of a backlash, hipsters're untrustworthy. He's so good and so special tho, I hope he ends up having the samew kind of moreorless permanent cache as someone like Eno. BUT anyway I got my copy of "First Thought Best Thought" today and God, it's just gorgeous. "Instrumentals Vol 1" is almost kinda my new fav AR thing. That first track alone! And then the developments, ahhh. And thank you lots for making it available on vinyl! Should be getting the "Springfield" dbl12 next week.
