Very few people at Harvard knew who The Prodigy were back in the early 90s, let alone Leftfield. People were still stuck on Erasure and Duran Duran (specifically "Stop!" and "Rio", two songs I have come to loathe like you wouldn't believe due to forced exposure).

new examples of fillers ?
some of those coldplay bootlegs, junior jack 'e samba', and, odd but true, at manchester's fashionable 'chips...'last month ; 'a little respect' by erasure.
anyone else ?

Linus Loves new single "The Terrace" is the biggest filler I've heard lately, fucking mental 80s french loop, followed by a long piano breakdown and then the loop just comes in again. I'd imagine it'll be fucking huge.

Killers -- for some reason, Bowie's "Fashion" stands out as a request that not only cleared the floor, but caused the customers to carry a "no dance" grudge for the next few songs...which made me play more shit I wanted to hear, which killed any fun I was having that night.
Surprises -- for some reason, both "Shiny Happy People" and the 12" remix of "Sussudio" did much better than I thought they ever would. Could just be a middle of Michigan thing, however.

Hahaha, it was already topping every european dancechart back then, so that wasn't too difficult. From a UK perspective I also predicted Junior Senior pretty early, but that was also dead easy since it was already getting lots of airplay here.

suprise fillers: i had a nice books/r.ashley mix going that went over pretty well. casiotone for the painfully alone "baby it's you" (DFA Colette mix) with some bird sounds run through G4 and delayed/live roto-tracked during the intro pling plong part brought the house down.

Killers - Most of what people at dance parties request
So true!
From my own experience, and in the wrong context some of these would probably be killers.
Fillers:Hall & Oates - Out of TouchMr Flagio - Take a ChanceDebbie Jacobs - Don't You Want my LovePatrick Cowley - MenergyColonal Abrams - TrappedDavina - Don't You Want ItCajmere Feat. Dajae - Brighter Days (Underground Goodies Mix)
Killers:Peekay - Up In The Air feat Phily. I once got the best reaction of the night playing this track, and was convinced I'd discovered the most underrated garage banger of all time. Next time I played it I completely misjudged the mood of the after party I was playing at, completely cleared the room and decided it was the worst track of all time.

As much as it pains me to say these 'hip hop' segment filled the dancefloor on my recent trip to a club in pto vallarta, as you can see people in mexico don't really know or care much about the genre:

I always keep Robyn on my iPod, cause when I go to a private party and my iPod becomes the source of music, sooner or later a girl will walk up to it and either put Robyn on or ask 'why is there no Robyn on here?'

'Call Me Al' used to get people dancing a couple of years ago, not sure about now though for some reason. Old nineties pop/rap/r'n'b - 'Return Of The Mac', 'Creep', 'NEver Gonna Get It', 'California Love', 'Keep Their Heads Ringing' etc always gets people my age on the dancefloor.

If you live in Latin America there seems like there has been one or two Pitbull fillers every year for the past 10 years or so. Dude is a fucking party franchise in here it's getting ridonculous. This summer it's 'Como yo le doy' and 'Fun'. Last summer we had 'El Taxi' which was an annoying remake of 'Murder She Wrote', before that it was 'Timber' 'Dont stop the party' 'sube las manos pa arriba'...

One Dance and Work I've mostly hear them played for warming up. They're floor killers if played even in remix form when people are already in the floor... They could work on a more sexy, mellow kind of dancefloor but good luck finding one.

The best songs have enormous variations in tempo, beat and dynamics. Which makes, for instance, "Supper's Ready" useless for dancing.― Geir Hongro, Thursday, 16 August 2007 12:59 (8 years ago) Permalink

So I usually host parties at my house and since many people from different backgrounds and age gaps turn up every now and then I try to keep it mixed and take request to place in line. I guess my selections make 70% of the playlist and the others have been added as requested. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but here's a collection of highlights of the last 5+ reunions.
These are not all necessarily dancefloor fillers - I wasn't sure where to post - they mostly work for cocktail parties I guess but there's drinking and dancing going on - I'll keep updating as more parties ensue.
