I've only heard a little Black Mountain, and I've never seen them live,
so I would put them Oneida>Dead Meadow>Black Mountain.
It's true that Dead Meadow's albums leave a lot to be desired, but I think they are pretty hot live. I don't get all the comparisons to Blue Cheer with Black Mountain, at all. I don't think they sound anywhere near as unhinged as anything on OutsideInside or Vincebus Eruptom. Zeppelin seems like a much more apt comparison.

Trip Maker (Sean Witzman), Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:10 (nineteen years ago) link

i agree. they don't sound think they sound like blue cheer but the comparison did make me buy it.

stirmonster, Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Weird - I never thought of Pink Mountaintops as Krautrock. I love that album though. Is the lead singer of Black Mountain the same Canned Heat-sounding guy that sings on the Pink Mountaintops album?

Chuckling at the Tomkat's Marquee (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:25 (nineteen years ago) link

"black mountain">"secret wars">"shivering king and others"

don't know other oneida albums. "secret wars" is good but a bit too indulgent for my tastes to make for habitual listening. "black mountatin" is completely fat-free, just a really good rock album. the first dead meadow album is too sludgy for me to get that into.

rank&file, Thursday, 3 February 2005 18:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Indulgence is my habitual thing.

Oneida>Dead Meadow>Black Mountain

yep, ben, PM and BM are two sides of the same Steven McBean coin. the assembled coterie is different, but the nucleus is the same.

dead meadow sucks

i love this black mountain record though - psyched to hear the split with Destroyer!!

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Thursday, 3 February 2005 23:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, I was there. I don't remember much about the show, except that Destroyer didn't play enough songs off Streethawk: A Seduction.

Both Pink Mountaintops and Black Mountaina are great live. Don't miss them.

Also of note: the awesome drummer/keyboard player for Black Mountain plays keyboards for Pink Mountaintops.

i've been piss drunk all day...and this motherfucking album helped me through it.

just loaded onto my iPod thingie. what about pink mountaintops? my record store clerk friend isn't keen on it, and he really likes black mountain - is he crazy?

Wait, are we talking Vincebus Eruptus Blue Cheer? Outsideinside Blue Cheer? Oh! Pleasant Hope Blue Cheer?

the band more or less changed their sound every album in the initial years, ya know.

donut christ (donut), Friday, 4 February 2005 03:15 (nineteen years ago) link

indeed-y i do! yeah man, if ya want to send it to toxicconvert at gmail dot com that'd rock!

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Friday, 4 February 2005 04:07 (nineteen years ago) link

do they not have mp3s on their label website? (JetJaguwar?)

donut christ (donut), Friday, 4 February 2005 04:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Jagjaguwar, actually. MP3s here: http://www.jagjaguwar.com/mp3/index.htm

My sideburns just grew an two inches listening to this album.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Friday, 4 February 2005 04:35 (nineteen years ago) link

"just grew two inches..." rather.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Friday, 4 February 2005 04:35 (nineteen years ago) link

haha.. yup, this sounds like Outsideinside-lite. Me like.

donut christ (donut), Friday, 4 February 2005 04:52 (nineteen years ago) link

oh yeah, man, these are great. Thanks for the link Dave.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 4 February 2005 05:03 (nineteen years ago) link

It should be noted that the album is far from monolithic-sounding, so those MP3s are not totally indicative of Black Mountain.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Friday, 4 February 2005 05:54 (nineteen years ago) link

the only song i really don't like is that first one, really. sounds like a Kings of Leon / Make*Up mash-up

Roger Fidelity (Roger Fidelity), Friday, 4 February 2005 05:58 (nineteen years ago) link

Stirmonster, both the Observer (not the useless OMM) and the Sunday Times raved about it in January, quite accurately too and deranged (un)style mag GFN did a piece on them in their first issue. It isn't officially out for a couple of weeks, so the kiddies press won't notice it until then, if ever.

snotty moore, Friday, 4 February 2005 12:13 (nineteen years ago) link

all my emails got bounced back to me. wtf. if soulseek is working i have it. formerlypoopsmcgee

stirmonster, Friday, 4 February 2005 15:02 (nineteen years ago) link

so, is the final track on this supposed to be a bunch of static?? Or did I just get a corrupted file?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 5 February 2005 00:18 (nineteen years ago) link

"so, is the final track on this supposed to be a bunch of static?? Or did I just get a corrupted file?"

The latter.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Saturday, 5 February 2005 02:52 (nineteen years ago) link

the 'untitled' track, you mean? it was static for me.

derrick (derrick), Saturday, 5 February 2005 05:09 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah i gots me the static too.

Big Baby Bingo (Chris V), Saturday, 5 February 2005 13:45 (nineteen years ago) link

ah ok ... I see what's going on here. Last track "Untitled" is apparently some kind of 'multimedia' deal. I guess I'll just have to wait until I pick up the CD proper to watch it. ( which, uh, in case anyone from Jagjaguwar tracks their referrer logs back from Dave's link -- I will buy it!! and I will proselytize and shout from the mountaintops and proclaim its greatness to all of my dirtbag stoner friends)

Anyway, yeah this album in incredible. Well, maybe *incredible* is a tad too strong, but it's still pretty damn great. They "get" it. Always so encouraging to encounter a new band who gets it. The drummer is real solid. This album makes me want to have sex. I listened to it twice last night walking around the city. I don't so much hear the Led Zep comparisons though. The album is kinda front-loaded to make you think it's gonna be a Pageian riff-o-rama, but it's pretty subtle, dreamy in places. the Head East comparison was pretty funny though. And not all that inaccurate! I thought Head East had a girl singer too for the longest time. Then I finally picked up a copy of Flat As a Pancake and looked at the picture on the back of the dudes eating lunch, and I was like "where is the girl??"

Can't wait to see 'em live.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 5 February 2005 21:17 (nineteen years ago) link

So this is good, is it? (Now I like me Dead Meadow but I've only heard the live album -- they're friendly fellers, though, met 'em in London.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 5 February 2005 21:22 (nineteen years ago) link

they're a new band, i guess, but they've all been percolating around Vancouver for a good 4 years, at least.

i'll probably pick this up, you know. it is good.

derrick (derrick), Sunday, 6 February 2005 08:12 (nineteen years ago) link

oh, and they're playing with kinski next month, as well as oneida(who i've never heard). i think i'll go. i really like 'set us free'.

derrick (derrick), Sunday, 6 February 2005 09:04 (nineteen years ago) link

Is it me or does "No Hits" borrow heavily from Giorgio Moroder's "Chase" from the Midnight Express soundtrack? It might even be a sample.

Mark (MarkR), Sunday, 6 February 2005 16:44 (nineteen years ago) link

zep/blue cheer camaro '70s sludge rock my ass, on their albums these guys sound like a friggin shoegaze band. they sound anemic and amorphous, they don't rock, and neither did pink mountaintops. jeez.

Cool to see this thread revived and to find out there's a new album and tour - I just threw this (2005 rekkid) on the turntable last night on a whim and really enjoyed it - glad I didn't get rid of it, cause a bunch of my friends really slag that release...

(Does Lightning Dust have new stuff out? And man, the new album is all watermarked and shit… Which means I have to be careful when I rip it to listen on my mp3 player).

Lightning Dust just has the one album that came out in the spring. And probably that'll be it for a while since BM has the ol' new album thing happening.

Dr. Superman, Thursday, 27 September 2007 21:35 (sixteen years ago) link

wow, what an influential place. they counted john cage, willem de kooning, and buckminster fuller among their faculty, spawned the black mountain poets, staged the first-ever "happenings" (in the THIRTIES)...

...wait, we are talking about black mountain college, right?

Lawrence the Looter, Friday, 28 September 2007 01:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Sabbath meets… some '70s prog with a chick singer that I can't think of off the top of my head.

I eat cannibals, Friday, 28 September 2007 20:42 (sixteen years ago) link

some of their tunes remind me of a more psychedelic version of songs by songs: ohia or electric magnolia co. which is weird, because i don't really like either of those groups. mostly on the songs with male/female harmonizing, like 'voices'

6335, Friday, 28 September 2007 21:12 (sixteen years ago) link

they were great on friday. their new stuff definitely has a sabbath vibe to some of it. 'druganaut' ruled, i wished they would have played the extended version and then extended that out to 15 minutes. cave mountain singers were pretty good, too

6335, Monday, 1 October 2007 06:39 (sixteen years ago) link

three weeks pass...

Pretty good last night. That chick is more a warbler live, and she looks lost when the rest of the band's rockin' without her.

Still, pretty fucking good. We did get the 15 minute Druganaut, and a pretty sweet version of Don't Run Our Hearts Around.

Live, the Cream Clapton tone of the guitar comes through a lot more, and there's more emphasis on the moog, which I like.

I eat cannibals, Wednesday, 24 October 2007 17:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Fantastic performance in Nottingham last Thursday in advance of their appearance at ATP; they really blew me away. They had no new product to push, save for a tour-only 12" containing two tracks that won't be on the new album (plus a voucher giving you a password for downloads of the same tracks). There's also a free download of "Tyrant" from the new album on their website.

So they got some of their gear stolen while they were on tour and now a bunch of local bands here are holding a benefit gig for them. Gotta wonder why Black Mountain don't just play a benefit concert for themselves!
