just wait til they play a juggalo gathering and you need to go

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 20:18 (thirteen years ago) link

it's like a bearable version of SALEM

Indolence Mission (DJP), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 20:19 (thirteen years ago) link

this mcguire album is actually quite good. there will probably be some kind of karmic retribution against me for saying this but it almost has a hejira/mingus joni type ambience. a chillwave explosions in the sky is probably a better analogy but it's been a really good cold winter afternoon listen.

skip, Tuesday, 21 December 2010 21:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Something about the drifting dreamy mood of it reminded me a lot of Popol Vuh.

O Permaban (NickB), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 21:31 (thirteen years ago) link

Plus, that Rangers album is Salem/Antwoord for The Wire set

No idea what that means, but I've been enjoying the Rangers album. How many lists did it appear on? One or two at most?

Position Position, Tuesday, 21 December 2010 21:37 (thirteen years ago) link

i listened to the rangers album and was distinctly unimpressed, and i'm usually predisposed to digging that sort of thing

elizabeth pisstake club (electricsound), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 21:54 (thirteen years ago) link

i find die antwoord tolerable because 1. their 'irony' is actually supposed to be funny+entertaining rather than just a lazy curtain to hide behind and 2. they are pretty catchy and fun

which fucking mcguire album am i supposed to listen to? dude came out with like three this year? thinking thats not a good sign...

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 21 December 2010 22:03 (thirteen years ago) link

I only know of two, the new one in question here and a reissue that was a compilation of some older stuff (and really great, fwiw).

The one on Mego called 'Living With Yourself'. Haven't actually heard any of the others. xp

O Permaban (NickB), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 22:09 (thirteen years ago) link

it took me til just now to figure out that oOoOO is a completely different band from OOIOO

some dude, Tuesday, 21 December 2010 22:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Although I am relived his name is actually his name and not WHOA RECONTEXTUALIZING ish like "Hype Williams" or "Phillip Seymour Hoffman" or "Dale Earnhart Jr Jr"

"Hype Williams" as a name really annoys me.

just wanna second the love for deej's year-end list, it's great

k3vin k., Wednesday, 22 December 2010 15:37 (thirteen years ago) link

it's all hip-hop/rap though!

like, if someone puts out a year-end list that's 100% "in my world of white guitar ppl" we all lose our shit

deej's list is similarly zzzzzzzz, right?

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 15:46 (thirteen years ago) link

Well, deej's is a rap list for a rap blog. I would hope his full list would be, like rawse, deeper than rap.

Real curious to see how u guys react (if at all) to my list. It's pretty whineycentric.

mmmm... yung hummus (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 15:51 (thirteen years ago) link

i for one am excited to see yr list

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 15:52 (thirteen years ago) link

obv that is like an anti-compliment but whatevs

ilxor I would be honored if you did an ilxor-style data dump on my list, even if just over email

mmmm... yung hummus (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 16:00 (thirteen years ago) link

i have no problem with an all white guitar rock list if its awesome. and doesn't count out black guitar rock (if there is any that is worth hearing). and it doesn't put the suburbs and my lame homo fishstick fantasy at #1 and #2

irish xmas caek, get that marzipan inta ya (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 16:02 (thirteen years ago) link

where is your list whiney?

i am mostly interested, as and when i make my list, as to whether anyone discovers new stuff they love through it, rather than nitpicking over what's at #8 vs #9, which is broadly interchangeable anyway.

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 16:07 (thirteen years ago) link

Cuz it ain't ready!

mmmm... yung hummus (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 16:07 (thirteen years ago) link

it's also not the end of the year yet!

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 16:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Yep, records that are getting fucked on ppls lists because they're poppin out to early

- jazmine sullivan
- ciara
- r. kelly

(- keri hilson: not likely to be on anyone's list, not even mine, but doesn't deserve to be ignored either)

If it isn't actually good enough to appear on anyone's best-of-the-year list, why does its release date matter?

if more than a few random ilxors and geoff barrow stans had heard of anika, that might help a bit

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 16:18 (thirteen years ago) link

that r. kelly shit is all over my list, it's really good!

At least Diddy is sure to wind up on my list next December.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 16:19 (thirteen years ago) link

geoff barrow is involved? colour me excited.

irish xmas caek, get that marzipan inta ya (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 16:19 (thirteen years ago) link

i haven't heard it yet, but i understand it's basically BEAK> (Barrow's new-ish band) with a Nico-sounding female singer, with usual Barrow production, dub/kraut/post-punk influence, bit of '60s girl group stuff, oh and it's released on Stones Throw -- one of the few labels I'll buy pretty much whatever they put out and it's almost always worthwhile

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 16:38 (thirteen years ago) link

speaking of Stones Throw, is no one else following the Madlib CD series on Stones Throw this year??? not one mention anyplace. i mean it's a Madlib 11-12 CD series of archive/vault stuff + mixes, i understand it's a niche product, but any critic listening to a couple hundred plus albums in a year needs to find room for stuff like this

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 16:40 (thirteen years ago) link

If it isn't actually good enough to appear on anyone's best-of-the-year list, why does its release date matter?

some individual trax are strong enough to appear on people's lists, and generally it's worth a mention in general round-ups

i'm amazed that a geoff barrow project went so under-the-radar! want to check that out

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 16:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Anika is in our Top 20 but to be fair the album got so badly mishandled that it's getting "released" again at the end of January.

Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 16:46 (thirteen years ago) link

the madlib (2, 3 and 5 i think) i heard was nice but come on, i couldn't keep up with dude back when he wasn't releasing at least (!) one thing a month, dunno how i could this year.

i'm sure i'm not the first to say this but i would not have predicted the emergence of "did it on em" as the consensus nicki minaj track on these list. in retrospect it kind of makes sense, but really?
