I agree the new Darkstar album is terrible. They made the wrong aesthetic choice, especially after "Aidy's Girl Is a Computer" is amazing.
You don't like Untrue? That's a classic to me.

the irony is that i don't much like burial or darkstar or james blake either. or "dubstep" much. but there's music within the orbit of dubstep, that i wouldn't necessarily call dubstep myself, that's some of the best music being made atm. ikonika, guido, girl unit, jam city, julio bashmore, optimum, subeena, joker, ramadanman, untold, deep teknologi, altered natives...

Ive seen facebook status updates like "bumping this new j Cole definitely just made my top 10 of the year" and I'm just like furious at everything
Big Sean, too. I know legitimate rap fans, who know a lot about the history of the genre, grew up with it, who anticipate and wait on new Big Sean verses.
That's serious MOR shit, I don't get it. It's like blog payola rap
Also wasn't eminem's 09 album his comeback, the one with the pills relapse, not this new one?

It's Damian not Damien Marley, and I'll defend it on the '10 poll campaigning thread. I think there's maybe one good song each on the Eminem and Kid Kudi albums, but otherwise I agree so far.

im mad that its a corny commercial & that its shilling for mountain dew of all things. yeesh
― lyrics is weak ... like clock radio similes (deej), Friday, 24 December 2010 01:33 (thirteen years ago) link
i don't really want to get into this, but how is it worse to shill for mountain dew than vodka
― J0rdan S., Friday, 24 December 2010 01:34 (thirteen years ago) link
if yr gonna DROP KNOWLEDGE & be all I AM THE PROPHET RAPPER then shilling for sugar water directly linked to the rise in obesity that incidently disproportionately affects poor ppl & POC? ehhh
it just undercuts the entire message

let those barely successful rappers that have turned down endorsement deals cast the first stone
t/s: encouraging people to buy $1 beverages vs encouraging people to buy $89 pairs of jeans
― J0rdan S., Friday, 24 December 2010 01:36 (thirteen years ago) link
& anyway comparing him to chuck d is nonsense -- he's not the dude from the coup
― J0rdan S., Friday, 24 December 2010 01:37 (thirteen years ago) link
ehh. its corny to me. it contradicts his image. if he hadnt set himself up as some sort of mystical everyman prophet here to save rap then maybe i wouldnt be all 'wtf' -- i expect, like, wiz khalifa to do mountain dew commercials. q-tip, even. at least when nike used mos def it didnt seem like such a blatant pandering maneuver
― lyrics is weak ... like clock radio similes (deej), Friday, 24 December 2010 01:38 (thirteen years ago) link
who is trying to convince ppl to buy 89 dollar jeans? who cares? waste money however you wantdo u want me to bring out diabetes statistics

if mos def starts shilling jeans, i would be like "what the fuck???"
its how you set yourself up that matters w/ endorsements. if jacka gets into a gap commercial with common ill be like, 'fuck this'
― lyrics is weak ... like clock radio similes (deej), Friday, 24 December 2010 01:41 (thirteen years ago) link
it's one thing to criticize him for undercutting a persona (legit) it's another to single him out for being detrimental to his community, cuz then you're bordering on the arguments ppl made against jeezy/clipse/cam'ron circa 2005
― J0rdan S., Friday, 24 December 2010 01:41 (thirteen years ago) link
anyway i think you're overselling his image -- the dude's always been kicking around w/ diddy & the like -- obv part of his selling point was like "the conscious gangster!" or w/e but he's not krs or something
― J0rdan S., Friday, 24 December 2010 01:42 (thirteen years ago) link
Can't we separate rappers from their endorsement deals? I don't give a fuck what a rapper does outside the booth, as long as it's not beat up Rihanna.
― rihanna rennavated my dick (rennavate), Friday, 24 December 2010 01:43 (thirteen years ago) link
hes overselling his image & so are his fanshes like the savior of real rap & hes making really goofy & poorly staged commercialsi wouldnt even be mad if it was at least well done.
& no this isnt the same as getting mad at jeezy or clipse, although um there are legit criticisms to be made of those artists & particularly the way they are received, but jeezy never pretends to be anything more than he is -- there's no JAY ELECHAUNUKAH type mystical propheticism to his shit -- he brings exactly as advertised. if he started shilling for mountain dew it would be weird too!
50 cent managed to do this kind of endorsement right, btw
