do all goons agree that dubstep is fucking boring as shit regardless

patti ayonnaise (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 22:07 (thirteen years ago) link

jeez sorry deej, i looked at a youtube screencap w/ an album cover that said Brand Nubian on it. i don't know what Enter The Dubstep is and am only vaguely aware that dubstep has anything to do with rap. pardon my offensive ignorance!

this is the worst chorus of any rap song this year

i thought that was your beloved Linkin Park album?

some dude, Wednesday, 15 December 2010 22:10 (thirteen years ago) link

haha deej c'mon, you list a bunch of well known albums specifically by title, and then reference a barely-rap compilation obliquely with a youtube and get mad when i don't understand exactly what you're talking about?

some dude, Wednesday, 15 December 2010 22:11 (thirteen years ago) link

i am so sick of this some dude/deej beef

har

some dude, Wednesday, 15 December 2010 22:12 (thirteen years ago) link

whiney otm but the reason enter the dubstep was mentioned in the OP is because ... its a dubstep remix of classic rap & it sounds like shit & is worth some lols. yeesh you dudes are mad critical

*plop*ism rules (deej), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 22:12 (thirteen years ago) link

i actually bought run the road for $1 in a used bin and i think it's pretty cool...but it might be grime not dubstep, or those two things might be the same thing like jungle/drum n' bass

have not heard linkin park, gonna keep it that way

the op was made yesterday iirc & no one paid attention
so i bumped the thread w/ a new line of discussion
i thought i explained this already?

'middlebrow rap' needs a swag cru re-naming to explain this swath of shit that appeals to kids who think the blueprint is the illmatic of the 00s

i don't even know what the exact 'middlebrow rap' we're talking about here is. B.o.B. pop shit? diminishing returns Eminem? over enthusiastic Joell Ortiz fans?

i don't think any rap fans actually dig b.o.b anymore?

*plop*timist (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 22:19 (thirteen years ago) link

this feels like the conversation we (probably) had when the wale/b.o.b/charles hamilton/kid cudi etc xxl cover came out but it doesn't really feel like that's totally a "thing" anymore

*plop*timist (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 22:20 (thirteen years ago) link

altho j. cole is keeping that flame alive

haha i'm not defending B.o.B. at all, he's wack and i mostly like that one song as a shameless Bruno Mars pop song.

some dude, Wednesday, 15 December 2010 22:20 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean, that's all a thing now because a lot of those those guys have had legit pop hits since

argh as if it weren't possible to hate kanye even more it pains me to see "hashtag rap" gain currency and "grocery bag" languish in ilx obscurity, come on whiney

k3vin k., Wednesday, 15 December 2010 22:23 (thirteen years ago) link

BOB & JCole both fit into this ... joell ortiz isnt popular enough ... eminem's record is considered a classic comeback by these dudes. 90% of rap board threads about pitchfork are ppl freaking out that waka outscored eminem

*plop*ism rules (deej), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 22:24 (thirteen years ago) link

kanye has more cultural curren$y than me at the moment at least.

also there's no way i could have called them grocery bags without being all, THERES THIS MESSAGE BOARD I POST ON GUYS or loltastic circa 2003 conflation "influential critical hangout ilx" ish

patti ayonnaise (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 22:25 (thirteen years ago) link

there is literally no excuse to mention ILX in any piece of writing ever, full stop

patti ayonnaise (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 22:25 (thirteen years ago) link

obv this isnt a 'real genre' just a constellation of 'respected rap' that we mostly think is total crap but it hits this trifecta of being MOR-pop, 'lyrically lyrical' & weirdly popular

*plop*ism rules (deej), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 22:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Drake fits in here, obv -- or ppl who think Drake is a legit good rapper

*plop*ism rules (deej), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 22:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Drake is lyrically lollical

yah dude read yr typical MOR rap message board & its dudes who think the best albums of the year are by drake, kid cudi, eminem, jcole. this is what rap is to swag nerds on other mbs

lyrics is weak ... like clock radio similes (deej), Tuesday, 28 December 2010 22:16 (thirteen years ago) link

what are "swag nerds" though? people that nerd out to non-swag-oriented rap?

hann am0n tana (some dude), Tuesday, 28 December 2010 22:19 (thirteen years ago) link

like wouldn't the people on this board geeking out about lil b or soulja boy be swag nerds, not eminem fans?

yeah i guess i'm just being obstinate about how NAGL it is to just randomly swap in "fruity swag" for "rap" in any context
