i <3 u, ilxor

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 9 December 2010 01:56 (thirteen years ago) link

ez you want the wildildlife put back up then?

Probably not going to vote for and I doubt anyone else would. Just had it on my list of heavy stuff I liked this year.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 9 December 2010 01:57 (thirteen years ago) link

There's nothing "arrogant" about my veto -- Swans are postpunk. Punk is not metal(or what is meant by heavy rock here), and postpunk isn't metal, even if there is metal crossover with both, and even if there is some heaviness involved.

Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Thursday, 9 December 2010 01:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Swans were postpunk in 1985, when being postpunk was still a concern. In 2010, they're Swans. No qualification necessary.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:00 (thirteen years ago) link

everything in this poll is post-punk -- punk happened in the '70s, this is 2010

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:01 (thirteen years ago) link

Okay, if someone is going to nominate the Ozzy album, I'm going to one up it and nominate a far better album by a rock survivor:

Rob Zombie - Hellbilly Deluxe 2

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:01 (thirteen years ago) link

Then we can have a Swans year-end poll and they will win.

Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:01 (thirteen years ago) link

zzzzzzzz

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:02 (thirteen years ago) link

Zombi was nominated last year

Bjorn Cyborg (van smack), Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:02 (thirteen years ago) link

and look at the complaints it got (and marnie stern the year before)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:04 (thirteen years ago) link

More stuff that should be DQ'd (Even if I nominated it) according to the nebulous criteria of the day:

Across Tundras - Old World Wanderer - sorry, Crazy Horse isn't metal
Boris & Ian Astbury - BXI - ha ha ha you kid, right?
Celestiial - Where Life Springs Eternal - a rough night in the woods isn't heavy, dude.
Danzig - Deth Red Sabaoth - cat litter is not credible
Killing Joke - Absolute Dissent - Goth
Ratt - Infestation - glam
Torche - Songs for Singles - I like Helmet too, but no
U.S. Christmas/Minsk/Harvestman - Hawkwind Triad - Various Artists, automatic disqualification
Wino - Adrift - Wino is metal, this is not
Wolf People - Steeple - Wolf in the name - automatic veto
Yakuza - Of Seismic Consequence - jazz-skronk

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:05 (thirteen years ago) link

Zombi wasn't just nominated, it placed pretty damn high. Marnie didn't place, did it?

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Wolf in the name - automatic veto

I guess I should be thankful Wolves in the Throne Room didn't have an album this out this year.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:08 (thirteen years ago) link

There goes my Wolf Parade dream

Bjorn Cyborg (van smack), Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:09 (thirteen years ago) link

. Marnie didn't place, did it?

it did

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:10 (thirteen years ago) link

This is ILM. If you want to administer a purist sort of poll, take it elsewhere. No malice intended, but that's just the way it be. Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" was just voted the #3 song of the century here. You think that would happen anywhere else? Unlikely. It's kind of why I love this place.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:11 (thirteen years ago) link

Marnie Stern - 41 in 2008. Zombi - 12 in 2009. Swans - DQ'd in 2010.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:14 (thirteen years ago) link

and so is marnies 2010 album

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:15 (thirteen years ago) link

i assume noone wants a tracks poll?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:17 (thirteen years ago) link

if i ever needed one shining example of why i don't like being on poll threads, now i've got one. i have actual children who fight about stupid shit. i come here to relax.

and i like all you guys. you know, for the most part.

try and have some fun, people! you might like it.

scott seward, Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:18 (thirteen years ago) link

you think this is bad scott, go look at the car crash of the alltime poll.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:19 (thirteen years ago) link

For the record, the year-end poll J0rdan and I will be running very soon will only have two qualifications. The songs/albums you nominate will have to have been released someplace in the world for the first time in 2010, but no longer than a year or two ago anywhere else in the world. Also, songs/albums leaked ahead of a 2011 release are ineligible.

That's it. Simple and easy. No fuss, no muss.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:21 (thirteen years ago) link

and a non-specialist poll.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:23 (thirteen years ago) link

True, but why don't you give the people who actually wish to participate in your genre poll some credit? Vetoing nominations arbitrarily is about the most "fuck you people" thing I can think of (at least in the realm of online polling).

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:24 (thirteen years ago) link

As Jeff already stated the metal poll started because lots of album that were really good were not getting into the big poll due to the fact that it was a big general poll. Nothing against that, they're great polls, but this poll was to cover niche stuff. Yes some things cross over but as much as i love metal mags like terrorizer covering swans, it doesn't feel right them being in this poll. It's not just me but others too. Including several people who love Swans. We all know the Swans album will place high in the poll you're doing (i assume musically has decided not to do it this year?).

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Than axe Joke too. They're even more post-punk than Swans.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 9 December 2010 02:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Than=then. Rarely screw it up that way round.

ugh sorry that's supposed to be:

Acid Witch - Stoned

I want a tracks poll! (Viceroy), Thursday, 9 December 2010 07:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, consider me a vetyo for Killing Joke too then. I love them, but they're more post-punk than Swans are. Having Dave Grohl play on an album doesn't automatically qualify you.

progspeed you! black metallers (aldo), Thursday, 9 December 2010 07:59 (thirteen years ago) link

That makes three vetoes (though mine should've been enough).

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 9 December 2010 08:01 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't really care about the veto thing one way or another but KJ are quite clearly metal related, highly influential STYLISTICALLY on other metal bands and have recently been featured on the cover of Terrorizer and Metal Hammer; Swans fit into a more folk rock/Americana bracket at the moment.

It's not for me to say but I guess SunnO))) were allowed not because they were as heavy as fuck but because they were as metal as fuck. I don't want to point out the obvious but their whole thing was based round playing drop tuned Melvins and Earth riffs at horrific volumes while dressed as monks. And then taking the aesthetic and applying it to black metal and taking on the lead singer of Mayhem as an auxilliary member. If this isn't metal, I literally don't know what is.

If Swans are in this poll I will vote them really high; if they aren't I won't but they don't feel as good a fit to me.

Anyway: Cephalic Carnage 'Misled By Certainty'
Blood Of The Black Owl 'A Banishing Ritual (Into White)'
Encoffination 'Ritual Ascension Beyond Flesh'
Cultus Sabbati 'Garden Of Forking Ways' (might be next year)
Dragged Into Sunlight '
Bongripper 'Santa Worshiping Doom'
Melechesh 'The Epigenisis'
White Hills 'White Hills'
White Hills & GNOD 'White Hills Drop Out With Gnod'
White Hills 'Stolen Stars Are Left For No One'
Kellermensch 'Kellermensch'
Solace 'AD'
Black Tusk 'Taste The Sin'
Suma 'Ashes'
My Uncle The Wolf 'Flush'
Ramesses 'Take The Curse'
Sloath 'S/T'
Shining 'Blackjazz'
Gnaw Their Tongues ’L Arrivee De La Terne Mort Triomphante'
Adrift For Days 'The Lunar Maria'

If it's any consolation, or adds any clarification I don't think Man's Gin or Scott Kelley's albums should be here either.

Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Thursday, 9 December 2010 10:22 (thirteen years ago) link

That should be: Dragged Into Sunlight 'Hatred For Mankind'

Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Thursday, 9 December 2010 10:24 (thirteen years ago) link

looking fwd to the main poll a lot more this year.

"let's eliminate a few albums before polling b/c they will already place in the main poll, thus, they are getting their recognition, no need to poll them in the metal poll, too" = bullshit

"god i really want these results to be UNPREDICTABLE..... do you guys think this really popular album should be voted on head-to-head with these less popular albums? i mean, wouldn't it be BORING if some people who dont live on ilx day and night submitted ballots and voted for the more popular album, and then it did better than these obscure albums i really like?? VETO" is reaaaally nagl, and total bullshit

fellow metalheadz, have not had immense pleasure of hearding beloved Swans' artifakt yet, but has come to general attention that it beink preemptively vetoed for not sufficiently metallurgic beink. if such troo, would beink a grave disservice and injustice allowed bloom manifold in prezent midst. such kalamitous, precedent-givink event must not beink given chance to spread like kansurs. so, with such mindink, still must beink insistink Swans allowed proper placink on glorious post-kapitalist/post-racialist listink, alone on general principle. in opinion humble, ALL metal-friendly musik must beink allowed prosperous placink on polls! do not forget, comrades, in Soviet Russia Swans vetoink YOU!!! pleaze to not let such come to pass on treasured, free-thinking massage bored. thanking most profusely you in advance.

Yeah, corny indie fuX0rs typically vouch for Killing Joke and Swans all the time. Bring that pic back out when someone shows up and nominates Death Cab For Cutie.

Horseback was given a ltd vinyl only release in the UK 2009, the main release on relapse in the usa was 2010. but if people want to veto it then fine.

"Horseback was given a ltd vinyl only release in the UK 2009, the main release on relapse in the usa was 2010. but if people want to veto it then fine."

it originally came out on Utech Records in the summer of 2009. Then Relapse re-released it. But hardly anyone heard it until it was on Relapse. Because Utech doesn't send free downloads to lazy metal writers. But I'm glad that Relapse gave it a wider audience. Its a great record.

and you can still buy the original cd package from Utech. even though it was limited to 500.
