Nick Mirov (nick), Monday, 24 May 2004 03:43 (twenty years ago) link

For some reason, I can only think of Beatles songs that do have a few more words, but anyway...

You Know My Name (Look Up My Number)

billstevejim, Monday, 24 May 2004 03:46 (twenty years ago) link

That's got other words in but.

Oh all right, Revolution 9 too then.

Pack Yr Romantic Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Monday, 24 May 2004 03:48 (twenty years ago) link

?? I don't think the word "Revolution" ever appears in that song.

(George Harrison didn't write "I Got My Mind Set On You".)

There are several Smog songs that just repeat a line or two, but the only one (I think) which repeats the title over and over again is "Bored Bayou".

Was this a cover of Lothar & the Hand People's "S&V" ??

lovebug starski, Monday, 24 May 2004 09:17 (twenty years ago) link

Chemical Brothers, "It Doesn't Matter" - this, of course, is a sample of Lothar & the Hand People's "It Doesn't Matter"!

Lothar and the Hand People!!

I have one track of theirs on a compilation I bought ages ago - its called 'Standing On The Moon' and its blumming brilliant - a long, hypnotic, monologue with a dirge-chorus (err...I realise I'm not selling this very well).. is 'It Doesn't Matter' similar? Would you recommend the rest of this band's output?

hobart paving (hobart paving), Monday, 24 May 2004 10:19 (twenty years ago) link

Sly & the Family Stone's "Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey" comes pretty close.

Joseph McCombs, Monday, 24 May 2004 11:32 (twenty years ago) link

"Standing On the Moon" is actually called "Space Hymn", well it is on the album I have. To be honest, I don't think Lothar & the Hand People were that good, their use of electronics isn't very interesting. United States of America, Silver Apples and even Fifty Foot Hose are all better.

Dadaismus (Dada), Monday, 24 May 2004 11:45 (twenty years ago) link

ween - the hiv song

i interpret it as their "song with a message".

I'm guessing there might be a few Blues Explosion songs that fall into this bucket.

'Sing' by Travis has always seemed like one of these type songs.

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Monday, 24 May 2004 13:57 (twenty years ago) link

"Here Comes a Headache" by Hypnolovewheel.

I think, anyway.

"Life's So Short" repeats the title over and over, but ends with "Life's so short - so don't waste it!"

Punk Rock Love - Magnetic Fields

___ (___), Monday, 24 May 2004 14:37 (twenty years ago) link

ah Barima you know 'Sing' has full verses and everything. i did include it on my old 'i hate songs where the chorus is just the title of the song repeated' thread although that theory was somewhat thwarted by The Ramones amongst other people

jesus christ already I'll say it again.

We Did It Again by the Soft Machine totally owns.

"Life's So Short" repeats the title over and over, but ends with "Life's so short - so don't waste it!"

Yeah, I know. The song's really over by the time he says that, though-- it's more like a send-off than anything else.

Daft Punk's "Musique" is another example, right?

And yeah, "We Did It Again" is the clear winner for this thread, although I may be thinking of the Bongwater version when I say that.

Frankie Laine - Rawhide

I really don't think most dance music should be allowed, there's too many songs that are just one thing repeated. After all...it's time for the percolator

I keep wanting to say "What You Do To Me" by Teenage Fanclub, but that has one other line too. It's still a damn sight nearer than "World Shut Your Mouth" - that's not even the only lyrics to the chorus...

"house of jealous lovers" comes pretty close

You have to remember that the full title is "House of Jealous Lovers (SHAKE DOOOOOOOOWN)" which means it definitely counts.

Nomeansno, "Joy"
Butthole Surfers, "Hay" (tho not "Hey")
Judas Priest's "Defenders Of The Faith" counts, if you pretend it's actually called "(We're All) Defenders Of the Faith"

Sly & the Family Stone's "Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey" comes pretty close.

Except that the inversion is the whole point of the song!

But what about "Wipe Out"?

"She Was a Visitor"-Robert Ashley
Oh, sorry, that's not a "song."

Well, in that case how about the version by Minimal Man.

Its not the title, but Aphex Twin's Come to Daddy just goes I WANT YOUR SOUL over and over. Thats oddly all I can think of, for some reason one line songs dont pop into my head, even though when I read others already listed I go "oh yeah that one". Weird.

Morrissey almost does with Dagenham Dave:

Dagenham Dave Dagenham Dave Dagenham Dave
Dagenham Dave Dagenham Dagenham
Dagenham Dave Dagenham Dave Daegnahm Dave
Dagenham Dave Dagenham Dagenham Dave
Dagenham Dave Dagenham Dave
Oh Dave Oh Dagenham
Dagenham Dagenham Dave
Dagenham Dave Dagenham Dave
Oh Dave Oh Dave Oh Dave Oh Dave

I've always wondered what that lyric looked like written down. And now I know.

Seven Ways To Love - Cola Boy feat Janie Lee
I Can't Take The Power - Offshore
Injected With A Poison - Praga Khan
Get Ready For This - 2 Unlimited

The top 40 in 1991-3 seemed to be comprised almost entirely of songs with only one line sung over and over. This was partly due to the attempted European unification of the UK charts by pilled-up Belgian techno-heads.

'Injected With A Poison' features more than just the title - maybe you're thinking of Digital Orgasm's 'Running Out Of Time'?. i was going to say 2 Unlimited but there are a lot of 'YEAHs!' 'I Can't Take The Power' is a good one tho.

Of course, Running Out Of Time! That's exactly what I was thinking of. Injected With A Poison said "we don't need this anymore".

On the ITV Chart Show they were "Digital O" because orgasms are kind of rude.
