Well, in '88 NWA had "Fucking with me cuz I'm a teenager/ with a little bit of gold and a pager" but I'm sure there were earlier ones.

Q-Tip rhymed "teenager" and "pager" on some Tribe Called Quest song, but that was definitely after '88.

could Jethro Tull's "J-TULL.COM" album have been any more analogous?

donut bitch (donut), Monday, 3 March 2003 02:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

Pagers didn't blow up until '86 or so, I think.

How many ".com" albums and songs are there anyway? There's r. kelly's tp-2.com and craig david had a track I think, and trick daddy's thug.com and what else?

Just to throw some more data points out there... Warren Zevon's Transverse City (1989) has got all sorts of references to "the network" but doesn't namecheck the Internet specifically.

Earliest cell phone song I know of is Roger McGuinn's "Car Phone" from 1991

"parents just don't understand" by jazzy jeff & fresh prince mentions a car phone and that's from '89

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 3 March 2003 06:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

"Me and all the rich got mobile 'phones" - Happy Mondays 1990, but there must be earlier UK ones.

Internet Curtains by Denim!

suzy (suzy), Monday, 3 March 2003 12:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

On a vaguely related note, the AMG has a rich list of song titles with the word 'Internet' in them, including "Internet MCs," "Internet is Gay," "Internet Loser," "Internet Pygmy," "Eaten by the Internet," "Amor de Internet," "Internet is Just Bad Pot," "Chica del Internet," "Internet Critic (Interlude)," "Internet Relay Chat with the Central Intelligence Agency," "Bloody Internet" and the ineffable "Internetejakulator."

didn't pete townshend write a concept alb abt the (idea of) the internet?

i don't know when though

mark s (mark s), Monday, 3 March 2003 16:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

'Internet Curtains' by Denim, b-side to 'It Fell Off The Back Of A Lorry', circa 1996.

A hit in the fact that it got nearer to the top 40 than any other Denim release.

"www I'm the shit dot-com" - Chubb Rock, Prince Paul Presents "A Prince Among Thieves" (1999)

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 3 March 2003 18:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

you forgot Chubb's brilliant removal of a "w": listen again and you'll see that he only uses 2 'w's.

(yes, I'm a sad, sad man)

oops (Oops), Monday, 3 March 2003 18:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

oh I didn't forget, I was just trying to cover for him...

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 3 March 2003 18:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

no need to cover for him, it was 'brilliant'. Seriously though, a third 'w' would ruin his flow.

twelve years pass...

came across toy-box's ultra-cheesy www.girl today and asked myself this very question. my first thought was, "i bet ilx has a thread on this subject". was not disappointed

the first instance i can think of is Mousse T's 'Horny' - the lyrical version from '98 (i think) but surely there was something a lot earlier than that - a hip hop track from '93/'94 perhaps?

I suspect there must be one older than Poe's "Hello" (first released late '95, became a hit on U.S. genre charts in late '96). The web was enough of a thing in 1995 for The Simpsons to make jokes about the internet containing nerds and porn. But that wouldn't transfer well to serious music :)

The unusual thing is that Poe's line, "like a disconnected modem", makes total sense. Most other lyricists seem amiably clueless about the technology or the lingo, e.g.

I tried to call you
But I can't find the telephone
I sent a message through the internet
But it rejected
(sic)

Cut Mousse T some slack, it's not his first language. Could there be an equally silly line on a hit in '95 or earlier?

(not a hit, perhaps not, uh, quality, but extant)

remember hearing this circa 1998 and finding it hilarious, if only because of the crowbarring of www., but neglecting to finish with a suffix.
