Did you order the limited edition with the DVD or single disc? I think the single disc isn't actually out until December.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 8 November 2010 02:29 (thirteen years ago) link

Hmmm, I think the single disc, but I just checked the site and they now have it updated to say the single-disc version gets released this Tuesday, the 9th. So hopefully I'll have it before the end of the week. Just getting antsy after reading all the solid reviews.

The little DVD was actually quite nice. 45 minute "making of the album" documentary, with short interviews and Q&As with each of the members. Was really helpful for me since this is the record where I got on board.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 8 November 2010 02:34 (thirteen years ago) link

I opted out of that, simply because those bonus DVDs just end up piling up around me completely unwatched.

If it had in any way increased the cost I would have been right with ya.

There's a new Rush single? Oh.

Oh!

Ha, Nate, your list of stuff you haven't heard looks like my top 20 list for the year.

Now playing: Atheist, Jupiter. Okay, I love Atheist's first three albums (yes, even Elements). And the promo MP3s were so low-quality that I fucking bought this one. But I don't know if I can get behind it. It doesn't sound like Atheist to me. Granted, there's only two original members still in the band (vocalist/guitarist Kelly Shaefer and drummer Steve Flynn), but the two new guitarists are playing all these Dillinger Escape Plan riffs, and Shaefer's vocals sound like Chad Gray from Mudvayne. Granted, the cover art is awesome - it's a painting of a lion and a bear wrestling inside a snow globe. But I don't know if that'll salvage it. At least it's got a dynamic mix, and isn't all brick-walled to shit like most current metal. That's something.

that's not funny. (unperson), Monday, 8 November 2010 19:09 (thirteen years ago) link

frankly, this description makes it sound like it's an album of the year contender to me

I wasn't too excited about hearing it, but yeah, technical death metal with tasteful production is definitely a rarity these days.

A. Begrand, Monday, 8 November 2010 20:23 (thirteen years ago) link

I wouldn't call it "tasteful" - it's still Jason Suecof mixing - but it's unclipped, and every instrument gets its own space.

that's not funny. (unperson), Monday, 8 November 2010 20:29 (thirteen years ago) link

so tonight i was helping a classmate with an assignment in the computer lab and noticed her updating a blog between tasks. not to be creepy but i go home and find said blog--the major topics are starting a pornogrind band and sexual fantasies involving varg vikernes.

just had to share with folks who would know what the fuck i was talking about.

I have to listen to a whole Crimson Glory boxed set today.

that's not funny. (unperson), Tuesday, 9 November 2010 14:07 (thirteen years ago) link

I used to like Crimson Glory. Or, at least, I bought three of their albums, and didn't mind hearing them.

This morning I'm enjoying the recent best-of from Entwine, although I haven't gotten to the dubious-sounding second disc of "stripped" versions yet.

Also, did I mention this German band Agrypnie? If so, did I mention that their new album is awesome, compositionally expansive black metal?

glenn mcdonald, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 14:22 (thirteen years ago) link

The Entwine alternate versions aren't terrible, but neither do I really see any need for them to exist. Probably I think the same thing about the compilation, period. Entwine albums are pretty consistent, and there aren't that many of them. Start anywhere.

glenn mcdonald, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 16:04 (thirteen years ago) link

I still enjoy Crimson Glory very much. Their first two albums, anyway.

I tried to finagle a review copy of the box set, but to no avail.

A. Begrand, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 18:27 (thirteen years ago) link

So I'm not supposed to reveal any details about the new Crowbar, but I will say that sobriety has not affected Kirk Windstein's ability to lay down some truly devastating sludge.

DESCRIPTION:
============
"MeteorCity was one of the main driving forces behind the stoner rock craze of the late 90’s / early 00’s. The debut release for the label, “Welcome to MeteorCity”, was released (and very quickly went out of print) way back in 1998! Now, 12 years later, MeteorCity is once again a key player in the resurgence and revitalization of the stoner rock/doom/sludge genres! In celebration of this, MeteorCity has put together this gorgeous 2CD megacompilation featuring one song by each band that has been released by MeteorCity "Mach 2" so far. "Mach 2" = since StonerRock.com took the helm of MeteorCity in 2007."

"MeteorCity “Mach 1” released debut albums and/or very early recordings by Unida, Nebula, Dozer, The Atomic Bitchwax, The Hidden Hand, Goatsnake, Eternal Elysium, Spirit Caravan, Solace and many, many others! MeteorCity “Mach 2” has, in their first three years, released debut and/or new albums by heavy-hitters such as Black Pyramid, Snail, Nightstalker, Elder, Farflung, Flood, Freedom Hawk, SardoniS, Village of Dead Roads and Let the Night Roar, amongst many others. "

"MeteorCity’s twelve years of passionate and innovative releases have kicked off the careers of many of today’s most prominent stoner/doom artists and have solidified MeteorCity’s reputation as the very best heavy rock record label in the universe!"

Ah, I'm very pleased to report that I enjoyed the new Cradle of Filth on first listen, which puts this one way ahead of the last one in my world. They seem to have remembered that energy and intensity are different from volume and speed!

glenn mcdonald, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 21:18 (thirteen years ago) link

And good songwriting, I hope. The last couple felt so lazy at times.

A. Begrand, Tuesday, 9 November 2010 22:39 (thirteen years ago) link

I gave the Cradle an 8 in my decibel review, but they bumped it down to a 7, which didn't surprise me at all.

Now that the fucking Financial Times has weighed in on the Salome album, I feel like I should ignore it on principle. But I've gotta write about it for AMG, so eventually that'll happen. In the meantime, though, I reviewed the second album by Mexican trad-metallers Voltax at BurningAmbulance.com today.

Children of Technology album on Hell's Headbangers is pretty sweet. I am kind of a sucker for d-beat/metal hybrid bands, though.

wow, had no idea salome were getting this kind of press. (and lol @ financial times.)

good for them. like the album but I haven't formulated much of an opinion beyond that.

Anyone digging the new Black Anvil, "Triumvirate?"

The riffage at the end of the first track, "What Is Life If Not Now!" is my favorite metal moment this year.

Has nobody talked about Deathspell Omega yet? Really?

This can only be because we don't comment on leaks then, right? Because otherwise, top 10 this year.

ia! ia! Cartman fthagn! (aldo), Wednesday, 10 November 2010 22:36 (thirteen years ago) link

I reviewed it for AMG this very day. I don't like it as much as its two predecessors (too fast 'n' blasty w/o the weirdness that made them what they are - or, apparently, were) but yeah, it's plenty solid. I still think Spektr are my favorite of the French weirdo-BM acts.

haha so Danzig was supposed to play in town tonight at a club called the cabooze but apparently threw some sort of fit because the stage was not large enough to hold his awesomeness or whatever and cancelled the show at the last minute. a buddy of mine just sent me a photo of the cabooze response, which was to change the marquee to read FUCK DANZIG in big illuminated letters

Not enough room for his cat litter pyro.

Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Thursday, 11 November 2010 11:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Funny. I finally "acquired" the new Danzig album this evening. And I actually enjoyed quite a few tunes on it. Will be seeing him next Tuesday as I assume the Roseland is big enough--I've seen him play there twice before. He hasn't been very good live since the early 90s though :(

Nate Carson, Thursday, 11 November 2010 11:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Ten bucks says someone's going to leave Danzig a bunch of cat litter backstage as though it was part of his rider. Where was the interview where the journalist kept trying to get him to talk about that photo, and he was just desperate to dodge it? That was cracking me up.

so last night i was thinking 'i wonder if theres such a thing as free improv metal' and i found painkiller. this shit's pretty tite, anyone got any more suggestions?

die fokken achewood (diamonddave85), Thursday, 11 November 2010 19:18 (thirteen years ago) link

You should also listen to Last Exit (pre-Painkiller) and you might like Yakuza (thrash w/saxophone) and Ehnahre (weird, atonal death metal w/some horns on the new record).

that's not funny. (unperson), Thursday, 11 November 2010 19:30 (thirteen years ago) link

gorguts, obscura is very much the opposite of improv but the wild, dissonant playing on the record might do the trick anyway.

original bgm, Thursday, 11 November 2010 21:50 (thirteen years ago) link

ehnahre sounds good. will be checking them out.

original bgm, Thursday, 11 November 2010 21:50 (thirteen years ago) link

Something else that definitely fits into this category would be John Zorn's band Moonchild (vocals by Mike Patton, bass by Trevor Dunn, drums by Joey Baron, sax by Zorn sometimes, guitar by Marc Ribot sometimes). Five CDs: Moonchild, Astronome, Six Litanies for Heliogabalus, The Crucible and Ipsissimus. Every bit as intense as Painkiller but more composed - a crushingly heavy mix of hardcore and skronk-jazz. Ipsissimus just came out at the end of September and it's fucking phenomenal. This band is totally being slept on, not only by headbangers who used to worship Naked City and Painkiller but by the Patton cult, too, it seems.

that's not funny. (unperson), Thursday, 11 November 2010 22:44 (thirteen years ago) link
