Graduation > 808s > College Dropout > Late Registration
But that makes it seem like I dislike Late Reigstration way more than I actually do.

I almost hate to say this because I hate when people act like music's quality (especially in rap) is linked to its subject matter, but for me it feels like there's this big divide between CD and LR, where pretty much every song has a distinct topic or narrative and fills a different niche, and Graduation and 808s (and, from what I can tell so far, probably Dark Twisted Fantasy) feel more like song after song of Kanye the superstar talking about life as Kanye the superstar without a lot of strong concepts to kind of distinguish one rant from the next. obv the early stuff is very much driven by his life and his personality, too, but I kinda miss when he made songs about shit, y'know?

Never said "Stronger" was his best single btw.

or Graduation > CD > 808s > LR
But I voted the other one.
Late Registration > College Dropout > Graduation > 808s

Er, almost.
Late Registration is his masterpiece if he'll ever have one

basically College Dropout is a DQ because I've only ever heard the singles (and, while I like them, they have never enticed me into getting the album) but I resolutely stand by the order of the other three

Kanye's last album, 2008's 808s and Heartbreak, was heavy on the Auto-Tune and stark synths, but relatively light on grandiose ideas. It was a necessary detour that expanded his emotional palette; a bloodletting after a harsh breakup and the passing of his mother that manifests itself in Twisted Fantasy's harshest lows.
Gah. This is pissing me off. 808s was a substantial narrowing of his emotional pallete.
― based lord sotosyn (The Reverend), Monday, 22 November 2010 06:45 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah i thought the same thing -- in fact, kanye's whole existence and popularity and transcendence was PREDICATED on him coming into rap with a wider "emotional palette" than every other rapper

been thinking about my dark twisted fenessey ever since.. j0rd's? dn
i mean, i guess you could argue that 808s added "i hate the shit out of my ex-girlfriend, what a bitch" to his emotional palette, thus widening it... but that would be a poorly worded sentence

it does feel like pfork "had" to give this a 10.0 though...when are we ever going to see another music event as big as this?
