Hey, Mike-t. If you only counted the number ones, what would it look like? (Just as this was what the BBC were doing)

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 24 January 2005 14:01 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm a little surprised by the lack of Madness in this poll, considering how well the 80s did in general.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 24 January 2005 14:14 (nineteen years ago) link

"House of Fun" ony, qualified there iirc...

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 24 January 2005 14:15 (nineteen years ago) link

i forgot it, but it's probably not my favourite song of theirs

Stevem On X (blueski), Monday, 24 January 2005 14:18 (nineteen years ago) link

I got sick second half of last week and consequently nowhere near a computer, so I didn't vote in the end. Quite a few songs between #51 and #100 would have been a few places higher if I had. And 'Knowing Me Knowing You' would have made it too. Oh well.

Madness had loads of top ten hits but only one number one, I think.

Hey, Mike-t. If you only counted the number ones, what would it look like? (Just as this was what the BBC were doing)

Oh, fairly boring I'm afraid:

1. Good Vibrations (3)

2. Ghost Town, Billie Jean, Wuthering Heights, Always On My Mind, Dancing Queen, Atomic, Uptown Top Ranking, Band Of Gold, Don't Look Back In Anger (2)

11. I Feel Love, The Model, Into The Groove, I Heard It Through The Grapevine, Can't Get You Out Of My Head, Paint It Black, Under Pressure, Come On Eileen, Ticket To Ride, Tears Of A Clown, It's Over, I Feel Fine, Paperback Writer, Telegram Sam, Maggie May, My Sweet Lord, Pure Shores, Name Of The Game, Yes Sir I Can Boogie, I Feel For You, Dub Be Good To Me, Setting Sun, Born To Make You Happy, Rock Me Amadeus, Super Trouper, Glad All Over, The Final Countdown, Unchained Melody (Gareth Gates) (1)

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Monday, 24 January 2005 16:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Incidentally: to avoid tactical voting, I voted first. My distinctly boomer-ish top 5:

1. Name Of The Game - Abba (#103)
2. You've Lost That Loving Feeling - Righteous Brothers (#109)
3. Good Vibrations - Beach Boys (#1)
4. Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel (#56)
5. Band Of Gold - Freda Payne (#22)

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Monday, 24 January 2005 16:43 (nineteen years ago) link

The oldest song to poll a vote:
472. You Belong To Me - Jo Stafford (16/01/53) 16 points, 1 vote
(This was the second ever Number One).
The next oldest:
250. Secret Love - Doris Day (16/04/54) 69 points, 2 votes

Whoo! There I was thinking I was a boring consensualist (my top four - in the top five) but I voted for both of these.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 24 January 2005 17:19 (nineteen years ago) link

Where did Great Balls Of Fire finish? I thought that would be the best '50s one, but I don't see it in the top 200, shamefully!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 24 January 2005 19:01 (nineteen years ago) link

great poll. rah.

gspm (gspm), Monday, 24 January 2005 19:09 (nineteen years ago) link

"Great Balls Of Fire" scored 52 points with 2 votes, and placed at #294.

Tell you what... here's the whole final scoreboard. Note that I haven't bothered re-arranging tied positions below the Top 200, so positions beyond that are approximate only.

Unchained Melody (Gareth Gates) (1)

Right. Who did this?

Bumfluff, Monday, 24 January 2005 21:33 (nineteen years ago) link

I'd like to know which three others voted for Amen Corner, "(If Paradise Is) Half As Nice."

I placed it at #23. I LOVE IT!

This poll is super. Except that I funked it up. Look at these five amazing tracks I passed over by doing it quick so as not to spend all evening on the thing:

I Feel Love - Donna Summer
Sound Of The Underground - Girls Aloud
Voodoo Chile - Jimi Hendrix Experience
I Heard It Through The Grapevine - Marvin Gaye
Ticket To Ride - The Beatles

I still would have kept Do You Really Like It?, mind.

Acme 2, Monday, 24 January 2005 22:36 (nineteen years ago) link

That was great!

Unchained Melody (Gareth Gates) (1)

I'll own up. It's the only single I've ever bought two copies of, the first I ever bought on the day of release, and if you are mean about it I will mope and look crushed at you.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:35 (nineteen years ago) link

Thanks for doing this awesome thing, mike.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:40 (nineteen years ago) link

you should meet my best friend, Greg. She loves Gareth as well, and I've been mean about him to her for years now. She finally admitted Will was better when he released "Leave Right Now". you can mope and look crushed together!

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:41 (nineteen years ago) link

I wanna play 'Sentimental' really loudly and sulk like Young G again now but my roommate would probably take the piss. (He is drunk and wandering around wearing a big coat over his boxers).

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 24 January 2005 23:58 (nineteen years ago) link

I am quite shocked that I'm the only one with love for 'Use It Up, Wear It Out'. And who's the other lovely soul that plumped for 'Glad All Over'?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 01:16 (nineteen years ago) link

"Great Balls Of Fire" scored 52 points with 2 votes, and placed at #294.

One of them being mine...

Also, I thought I voted for Moon River, but maybe it got chopped to make way for..err... The New Seekers.

Nice to see Fern Kinney in the top 200. Just.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 17:49 (nineteen years ago) link

hmm...

Mike, did my vote get to you? Would have come from "Ian"??

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 18:06 (nineteen years ago) link

I voted for Fern Kinney. I'm surprised it wasn't higher, to be honest.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 18:35 (nineteen years ago) link

I did...but it seems my votes got lost in the ether. I think I gave it about 25 points - would have put it quite a bit higher.

I amazed at the songs I apparently overlooked, too, but as it turns out that didn't matter.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 25 January 2005 18:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Hobart: You know what? I was wondering about this when I got back to my usual home PC on Monday evening and saw your e-mail in my Inbox. (Over the weekend, I was picking up late e-mails via webmail.)

Hmm, don't remember this one, I thought.

Then I checked through it very rapidly, and decided it was familiar after all.

Except, looking again, I've realised that it slipped through the net - not having shown up on my webmail for some reason. (Or maybe I just missed it.)

Many apologies for that... and I do assure you that everyone else's e-mails WERE counted.

So... feeding Hobart's votes in, let's do an update. Back in a bit.
