Can anyone comment on how this might compare to the AC/DC covers album? That's like the ONLY RHP/Kozelek thing I never owned.

Oh goody goody goody! Someone brought this thread back!!!! I am very happy because I've been meaning to do it for several days now.
What I wanted to say about it was it seemed to grow on me more as I continued to play it, but it still seems like after the first 3 or 4 tracks, it lacks something.
I decided in response to order the AC/DC covers album, just to see what would happen. Might as well own the ONLY CD I don't have of him, right?

Actually I agree, although it was the very first time I've ever felt attracted to him though I'd seen him once before live a few years back and honestly even though I heard RHP's very first album when it came out I've never felt a thing for him before so go figure. All of a sudden he seemed very attractive that night.
Well you see I believed the very last bus of the night was leaving to take me back home and I was very drunk at this gig. And mostly the only thing that had happened was the lead singer of Low was singing the songs. And at one point some folks in the audience yelled out for Mark to sing more, but he demured. I just didn't get the feeling anything was going to happen, and that bus was going to leave, the last bus...but I couldn't find the right bus stop in the end and so I took a cab anyway which cost me a fortune but what a luxury and then later on, only because of the "INTERNET" I found out that he had done my very *FAVOURITE* RHP song "Make Like Paper" at the gig and I mean...man...normally I wouldn't have even had money for a cab, it just so happened that that night I did. Weird shit. Never mind.
Wow this AC/DC cover of "You Want Blood" is really flipping my wig (some will say Husker Du style *limp wri*st" but not me.)
What is this song on now this is gorgeous - wait let me check the CD case: "Riff Raff" that's it.
Yeah, this AC/DC covers album is definitely better than the Modest Mouse covers album.

Honestly.
the last Sun Kil Moon was sooo fucking amazing' I mean just so unreal that if he chickened out and decided to do a half-arsed response to it, out of fear he'd never surpass it, I'm not surprised. Maybe he will come back round to wanting to do an album of his own songs. Give it time. Kate Bush has proved that with some artists, all we need to do is give it time (a LOT of time).

Now I don't feel so bad I missed him playing "Make Like Paper". I feel so lucky that he is coming back on his own, without the guy from Low.

I took my future wife to the show. It was about a week away from christmas and Koz came out alone and sang christmas songs for a bit...everyone was sitting on the floor and he started playing little drummer boy...it made my gf at the time cry..i knew then i must marry her.

I saw him and I was...disappointed. I think it just wasn't a good night for him, for whatever reason. The audience sensed it.

There was one point where he asked the audience how his physique was coming along, heheh. I wanted to yell out about his hair length, but I'm too polite. He's still pretty good at the on stage banter, though. Reading and communicating with an audience has never been a problem for him. One guy next to me yelled out for Free Bird - I said "oh for god's sake" and laughed.
During the interview he did on the radio (KEXP) prior to the gig he mentioned that he saw Morrissey & Bob Dylan as being exceptional lyricists. I thought that was kindof cool. I bet if you go to KEXP's website you can probably still listen to the interview somewhere. It was good.

none of this behavior is new. I won't see him solo again, I don't think. Too many diminishing returns. I've seen Eitzel sink lower but not as often. In fact I don't think I've seen more than one good Koz solo set (and that was actually a SKM show with Phil, someone else, and a string section). But RHP back in the day was something else.

― Kiptok, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 22:21 (fourteen years ago) link
It was a little more polished, and it lacked some of the raw intensity of GOTGH. But April is also a v., v. good disc.

The new one starts off really well but ultimately I think it might be... bad? Kozelek sounds so petty and cranky.

admiral fells promises or is there some other new one? I didn't care for most of that album actually, it was pretty dull.

After the masterful "Ghosts Of The Great Highway" (Daniel's comment above OTM) it's been diminishing returns for each release. I didn't even bother with the last one, maybe I'll see if Spotify has it.
― Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 15 May 2012 00:47 (twelve years ago) link
April is a very nice album; not as good as Ghosts but it reminded me a lot of Ocean Beach (only not quite as good) and Songs for a Blue Guitar...really more like an RHP album. Admiral Fells just didn't stick with me at all.
heard the new one and it's somewhere in the middle. I like the band songs but some of the solo tracks kind of blow by me. But it has some funny stuff for once; Kozelek can be a funny guy and it shows, at least in the song titles (moderately talented middle aged man.... not much rhymes with everything's perfect all of the time). The song for richard collopy, who was a guitar maker in SF, is pretty touching.
