I like the Ray Cash album.
Remix of "Bumpin My Music" with Pimp C, Project Pat and T.I. kills,
esp. T.I.'s verse:

"They criticized Too $hort cuz he rapped slow
Me for sellin blow and eazy e for bein hardcore,
Besides, critics didn't live it, they clueless
They followin yo lead when they bumpin your music."

and what (ooo), Thursday, 8 June 2006 15:03 (eighteen years ago) link

I think Rick Rock did a good portion of it, I didn't get production credits when they sent the CD though.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 8 June 2006 15:06 (eighteen years ago) link

Rockwilder did some too apparently.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 8 June 2006 15:07 (eighteen years ago) link

But I do think that making yr. album impossible to listen to in one sitting--which I think is pretty much guaranteed with 18 track, 80-minute monsters like King--makes it harder to be assigned "classic" status.

but one thing i like about king is that i've gone back after the initial listen-throughs (when all the obvious classics jumped out and kind of made it hard to appreciate the lesser pleasures) and found the album cuts. this is facilitated by ipod shuffle listening. so my repeat plays have shifted from "what you know" and "king back" and "get it" to "stand up guy" and "told you so" and "you know who." king is kind of an exception and in general i'm all for concision, but if you can make a solid 80-minute album, it's ok by me.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 8 June 2006 15:13 (eighteen years ago) link

you know who wasnt an obvious classic???

and what (ooo), Thursday, 8 June 2006 15:47 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah what is Ray Cash's release date now? I'm kinda checking for that.

"Stand Up Guy" and "You Know Who" are definitely my favorites right now.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Thursday, 8 June 2006 15:50 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm really into "Bankhead" and "I'm Straight."

max (maxreax), Thursday, 8 June 2006 15:51 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah i got burnt out on stand up guy on the leak (the actual leak not the drama mixtape). i kinda wish that one joint off the psc tape & the longest yard soundtrack was on king, thats maybe my fav ti sex rap ever

Amazon sez June 27 for RC

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 8 June 2006 15:57 (eighteen years ago) link

i did a snap music remix of whoomp there it is last night

and what (ooo), Thursday, 8 June 2006 16:07 (eighteen years ago) link

you know who wasnt an obvious classic???

i just kinda slept on the back end of the album the first few times through. which is a danger of long discs, but remediable with a little shuffling.

I know you’re all sick to death of talking about rap album lengths, but if The Massacre had been half as long I’d have loved it a lot more. I mean, the record’s 90% great, but TOO MUCH TO ABSORB AT ONCE WHY NOT SAVE SOME HITS FOR NEXT TIME OR FOR SOUNDTRACKS YE SAAVY MARKET GENIUS GANGSTAS

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 8 June 2006 19:39 (eighteen years ago) link

the massacre was trash

and what (ooo), Thursday, 8 June 2006 19:47 (eighteen years ago) link

It's going to take time. Right now, the majority rules. If everybody talk about black, and somebody come out saying blue, of course they going to alienate it for a minute. But the more people you get talking about blue, people going to realize that it's a scale, and they can pick a side. It's going to be power on both sides, and eventually, hopefully, the consciousness will come back around.

Rakim (pds37), Thursday, 8 June 2006 21:42 (eighteen years ago) link

the massacre was consulted lyrically by death metal writers "It's elementary, your life is but a dream, u know row row your boat ya blood forms a stream. " that shitll open ya eyes, literally

Sticking to specific records (new ones):

*The Very Best of DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince* (Jive/Legacy) >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Lupe Fiasco *Touch the Sky Hosted By DJ E Nyce* (Mixunit.com)

(I just verified this. It's true.)

lemme take back everything posItive i said about the massacre – listened to it this morning for the first time in months and it just seems like a waste of time all around now

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 19 June 2006 12:46 (seventeen years ago) link

New Shawnna album is great, way better than her first one. I kind of wish there were more club burners, just because the ones on the album are so great, but the slow meditative ones are really good (notable exception is the awful track w Bobby Valentino).

Also, ILM should be prepared for the fact that one song samples the NEW RADICALS. I am not even joking.

go ahead and rip me a new one but i like the DMC solo album just fine

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 19:57 (seventeen years ago) link

What's the call on the Suga Free? Took me a while, but it's growing on me--esp. "So Fly," specifically, the line "I keep my nails done, I speak well, I'm watching my cholesterol/Live on a body of water, enjoy drinking alcohol."

max (maxreax), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 20:39 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah, I didn't even know the Shawnna album was out next week until like today. I like the Field Mob album, especially "Blacker The Berry" and the Zone 4 productions, "At The Park" and "Bend Over Baby." between those albums and the compilation a few months ago, I'm kinda surprised that DTP is shaping up to be a pretty consistent label lately.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 20:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Suga Free is good as always, but without DJ Quik it might be his worst one.

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 20:46 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, well maybe he shouldn't have stolen DJ Quik's beat and sold it to 4-Tay.

It's not Street Gospel but I think it's almost as good as New Testament.

Anyone else heard Nas' "Where Y'all At" or Luda's "War With God"? The Luda song sounds like some old laid back Geto Boys/UGK type vibe. He sounds pissed.

The sample on the Nas song sounds waaaay familiar, but I can't place it. I'm not even sure whether I know it from the original or another rap song (I'm thinking the latter). Both of these are pretty hot.

the hook on "Where Y'all At" is sampled from "Made You Look," if that's what you mean.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Thursday, 29 June 2006 19:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Not the hook, that was pretty obvious. I meant the beat.

I like the Nas track, the new AZ track is incredible too. Haven't heard Luda yet. I think hearing him sound serious could be refreshing at this point though.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 29 June 2006 19:20 (seventeen years ago) link

Haven't heard Luda yet. I think hearing him sound serious could be refreshing at this point though.

It defenitiely is. What's the new AZ track?

It's Rodney, poised and rational! (R. J. Greene), Thursday, 29 June 2006 19:24 (seventeen years ago) link

Its called "The Format" and I believe its a Premier beat (if not its a good imitation). Gorgeous production at any rate.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 29 June 2006 19:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Thanks man!

It's Rodney, poised and rational! (R. J. Greene), Thursday, 29 June 2006 19:48 (seventeen years ago) link

That AZ track is fucking great; he's aged better than Nas, I think.

max (maxreax), Thursday, 29 June 2006 20:34 (seventeen years ago) link

"where y'all at" is nice! i'd pretty much given up on nas, but i'm assuming this is like made you look, the song that's going to get me all excited to go out and get the record, only to be disappointed....

M@tt He1geson, Rendolent Ding-Dong (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 29 June 2006 20:37 (seventeen years ago) link

yeah the format is great. i still check for every single az track that appears. i love last five years az shit more than his supposed classic shit. i love transcribing whole verses and marveling at how it all comes together and is about perfect as possible. he's on a whole other level than just about anyone.

Who's Luda going at in "War With God"? T.I.? I thought they settled.

max (maxreax), Thursday, 29 June 2006 20:46 (seventeen years ago) link

sorta okay, kinda stilted and like he can't pick which nas mode he wants to be in, mixing up worldweary nas teacher nas untouchable gliding over the track nas. az track kills it if you wanna compare them.

YOUNG AND GIFTED, MY TONGUE'S PROLIFIC
IN THE BEACH BUNGALOW'S HOW I BRUNG IN CHRISTMAS
WITH THE STREET'S I'MA FLOW, FROM THE HUNGRIEST DISTRICTS
SWISS KICKS, CRISP WHEN I COME TO THEM PICNICS
PLAY IT SLOW, PAPERCHASE, STACK AND LAY LOW
RANGE ROVE, TINTED ALL BLACK, THE SAME OL
PSYCHIC MIND, RIGHTEOUS RHYMES
THEN TURN THE NEW LEAF ON MY LIFE OF CRIME
NO CONCERNS WITH NEW BEEF, WHO'S AS NICE AS I'M
IT'S CONFIRMED FROM A FEW FEET, I'M STILL A SNIPER BLIND
BUILT MY FAME, SPILT MY PAIN
POLITICKIN DAILY, STILL TRYNA MILK THE GAME
IT'S OBVIOUS THAT I'M REAL, RAP SKILLS REMAIN
I TOOK SOME CHANGE AND I'M STILL THE SAME

Yeah I was really feeling "City of Gods" off the last one, the one with that extended Rakim quote and the disco d beat.

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 29 June 2006 20:53 (seventeen years ago) link

"The Come Up" was good too but not as good as "The Format"

deej.. (deej..), Thursday, 29 June 2006 20:57 (seventeen years ago) link

Why can't he just be Nas? It seems rediculous to say he has to choose a certain facet of his personality for each song and stick with it.
