The "I Got The Power" guitars are pretty much the definition of sampled guitars. Ha ha. In fact, didn't they just sample a singer and stick a model in the video? Or was that Black Box?

Let's be fair and admit 'Being boiled' is closer to modern electronic genres than to pop or rock. If we're going to veto this one we might as well veto kraftwerk.

Love action on the other hand... well, yes that one is perhaps closer to synth-pop.

Moka, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 21:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Where does Gary Numan fit into this debate?

rhythm fixated member (chap), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 21:46 (thirteen years ago) link

What I'd really like to know is where does Xenakis and Stockhausen fit into this debate?

Moka, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 21:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Yes to "Being Boiled" which slots nicely alongside Cabaret Voltaire, The Normal, Kraftwerk, etc.

No to "Love Action" even though it's an incredible song.

I say a yay on Xenakis and Stockhausen because they probably won't make it into the top 100 anyway (but deserve to).

Captain Ahab, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 23:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Come to think off it they'd probably fare better on the ALBUMS poll though... I also doubt they have a chance at breaking the top 100 but still...

?? ive never claimed to be a 'techno expert' altho i prob know a lot more stuff (altho more chi house related) than u realize, its just that this is a huge gigantic genre & i dunno a "ROCK MUSIC" nominations poll would seem equally daunting 2 me. i mean, we have fukkin four tet nominated and no one yet mentioned the percolator

when i think classics of 'techno electronic ambient' i think of max tundra but not any derrick may!!

the agony of bungled zings

tbh i am w/ deej on this, reading the nominations so far has really dampened my enthusiasm for the thing

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 01:56 (thirteen years ago) link

basically my issue is the pointless eclecticism

like maybe if we had a conversation about how "the bells" stacks up to "the percolator" or source direct to photek or "mushrooms" vs "in the trees" or whatever we'd be able to do some meaningful inquiry, get at what makes a genre tick and dissect it's conventions and values

fuck, we could even indulge ilm's pathetic boner for poptimism and do "energy flash" vs "sandstorms"

but instead we're descending into the dank anus of record-collector nerdery, and in the end we're going to get kluster next to kompakt next to kenny dixon jr and we'll pat ourselves on the back at a list only slightly less lame than the one in "losing my edge"

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:04 (thirteen years ago) link

lol'n p hard @ "meaningful inquiry"

swagula (Lamp), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:09 (thirteen years ago) link

can't we do this after the poll?

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:22 (thirteen years ago) link

i would like to point out that the notion of an ilm poll results thread ending with every clapping each other on the back and saying, "good show, everyone" is pure fantasy considering poll results threads have likely led to destroyed friendships, uncalled-for epithets, and murders yet to be solved.

seandalai, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 11:21 (thirteen years ago) link

sorry deej i was just playing

as i said in the other thread, considering how popular these nomination threads have been how come the rolling dance threads and related are such barren waste lands lately? is it just a sad fact of ilm that mindless listing and cataloguing is always gonna win out over actual meaningful discussion? i guess i know the answer to that but still, surely it's just as much effort to make these polls (which for the record i've never participated in and don't intend to) and vote in them as it is to i dunno post in the techno/house of the past thread about the hi hats in "forever monna" or whatever?

lao gan ma (r1o natsume), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 12:05 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't want to spoil ya'lls fun anyway, i'm just honestly interested as to why so few of the dance music experts in this thread don't express their love of the music elsewhere

lao gan ma (r1o natsume), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 12:07 (thirteen years ago) link

Me, personally? Because a couple of years ago, when I first turned up on dance threads asking questions that were taken to be stupid, I was told by a couple of the denizens within "OMG, if *she* starts getting into dance music, I'm getting out of it" - which can kind of put you off a bit.

Also because a lot of the things I'm interested in tend to be historically focused rather than sifting through the sea of newness to find stuff I'd like. With regards to new stuff, I'd rather read people who know their stuff than me shooting my mouth off and probably being told I'm wrong. I read the general thread, I certainly listen to the YouTubes but I don't think I have the knowledge to go much further unless a very specific thing is being discussed.

out of ash i rise w/my red hair and eat vegetables like air (Karen D. Tregaskin), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 12:19 (thirteen years ago) link

My presence here is v. dilettantish - I'm far from an expert on dance and my electronic tastes are to a large extent offshoots of my love for disco and Krautrock. I can talk Italo/early house/IDM/Hyperdub/beardo ok but I had never heard The Percolator until deej's rant above.

I agree there's a lower barrier to entry on a poll thread than on a Rolling Dance one, which probably works well for outsiders like me who come to learn and annoys insiders who are capable of arguing about hi hats and coffee pots. Depending on how this all works out I may or may not vote in the poll, it's not so important to me. In the metal poll (also characterised by subgenre territorialism and true/false oppositions) I didn't feel qualified to nominate or vote but I enjoyed the results rundown a great deal, heard a lot of new music and came away feeling I'd learned something. I'm hoping for similar outcomes here.

seandalai, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 13:20 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm kinda like Kate: these days I don't really follow new trends in dance/electronic music quite as actively as I did in the 90s, so I don't feel like I have much to contribute to the on-going "bobbins" threads. As for the "bobbins of the past" thread, it seems to be focused mostly on the sort of stuff I'm not very familiar with. My biggest love in electronic music is (pretty much) German non-minimal techno/house/dance of the 90s, but that isn't discussed much on ILM. I even started a thread about it, but it wasn't a success:

A Youtube/discussion thread for non-minimal German techno/rave/house/trance of the 90s (and beyond)

pretty much what Seandalai said, though my areas of semi-expertise are different. Looking forward to seeing how the chips fall, arbitrarily as they may.

lolling that ppl are bitching about "The Percolator" not being nominated while failing to nominate it

PS, I nominate:

Cajmere - The Percolator

and by "Heavens!" i mean WATERFALLS OF BIDDY (HI DERE), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 13:30 (thirteen years ago) link

like, obviously the way to solve the problem of the wrong songs being nominated is to NOMINATE THE SONGS YOU THINK ARE THE RIGHT ONES, otherwise you're just being a dick

and by "Heavens!" i mean WATERFALLS OF BIDDY (HI DERE), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 13:30 (thirteen years ago) link

I suspect this will be waaay more divisive than the metal poll. What ever your preferred metal sub-genre, there's still a sense of everyone pulling in the same direction for a common cause and aesthetic. Not so with dance, inter-scene rivally can be very fucking snarky. Part of the fun I guess.

rhythm fixated member (chap), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 13:31 (thirteen years ago) link

happy hardcore = the hair metal of electronic?

nah, but only because I like happy hardcore

I hate both :)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 13:34 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm not an expert in any sense, but I enjoy the genre (the poppy end, as with just about every other genre basically) and hope the tracks rundown will be a great way to hear more good stuff. No interest in debating hi-hats*, thanks. And it's hardly mindless listing - the rundown threads are great, whenever an actual discussion manages to break out among the bitching.

I'm also aware that the more people pitch in, the better any poll is going to be - so here I am.

* not actually true

I already nominated this!

Also, I wish this had been called a dance music poll. Because I'm getting quite irate that most of the electronic music I love doesn't seem to be eligible any more (I mean, are people going to be mad if I nominate Raymond Scott and Louis & Bebe Barron? WTF?)

I foresee a splinter "electronic music you can't dance to" poll, to complement the "dance music with live drums" one.
