so what rock songs commercially released as singles do you rate, charlie h

now you're making a reasonable point and i can see what you're coming from. i guess... i guess i would never be making a list like this.

charlie h, Monday, 13 September 2010 05:22 (thirteen years ago) link

where you're coming from

how old are you?

charlie h, Monday, 13 September 2010 05:26 (thirteen years ago) link

listened to all of these on youtube tonight. going with "Mr. Brightside" over "Drops of Jupiter", "Sweetness", "Hard To Explain", "Perfect Situation", "When You Were Young", "Maps"

Dan S, Monday, 13 September 2010 05:28 (thirteen years ago) link

anyway, i mentioned already that i like the strokes and the yeah yeah yeahs. that's enough to sustain my interest in the result of this poll.

charlie h, Monday, 13 September 2010 05:29 (thirteen years ago) link

sorry dude but you can't expect to Kramer in here on a false premise and make ~sweeping proclamations about the state of music~ and then get butthurt over people calling you out

subtle like the g in 'goole' (dayo), Monday, 13 September 2010 05:31 (thirteen years ago) link

i think you are being pedantic. and if your agenda is to "call people out" then i think we have our wires crossed, because mine is to simply comment on music and not make ~inaccurate assumptions about what other people write~. it's also presumptuous to assume i'm "butthurt". but if it gives you a perverse thrill to think you've got a one-up, i'm happy to let you continue thinking that way.

charlie h, Monday, 13 September 2010 05:51 (thirteen years ago) link

i think the lesson here is that it never turns out well to come in a positive thread and be like "all the music being discussed in here is fucking awful"

lesson learned

idk this guy sounds pretty butthurt 2 me

but let butthurts be butthurts, it's all butts under the bridge 2 me

banaka socka flame (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 September 2010 06:04 (thirteen years ago) link

I have long reconciled myself to the fact that Mr Brightside is a good song even without the JLC involvement but I'm voting for Maps.

Thread needs QOTSA involvement really but I dislike 2/3rds of these.

Matt DC, Monday, 13 September 2010 11:14 (thirteen years ago) link

actively dislike almost all of the list. doesn't seem very some dude-y.

that wd be true if it was about yr usual niche interest ilx stuff but this is virtually public domain, the stuff that you've probably heard even if you didn't want to

even the few ppl who have done anything good (soad, the strokes, nerd, white stripes) don't actually have their best songs, w/e

intercrüral (nakhchivan), Monday, 13 September 2010 11:50 (thirteen years ago) link

This isn't really my thread (at all) but I still voted :D

acoleuthic, Monday, 13 September 2010 11:51 (thirteen years ago) link

i wish i wasn't offline all weekend, this thread has been entertaining!

some dude, Monday, 13 September 2010 11:52 (thirteen years ago) link

i may finish and post 51-100 of the list here

some dude, Monday, 13 September 2010 11:54 (thirteen years ago) link

dooo ittt

i will never understand why people like 'helena' more than 'i'm not ok' :(

i do hate that train song

*sets trend* (deej), Monday, 13 September 2010 12:07 (thirteen years ago) link

Maps is p much a perfect song to me but is also the obvious corny indie choice so I guess I will vote with my guilty fondness for that All-American Rejects song

Ship I thought you were a Sonic Youth stan; no "Incinerate"?

jaymc, Monday, 13 September 2010 12:44 (thirteen years ago) link

If you check the piece I specified only songs that have appeared on a Billboard rock chart (SY haven't had a charting single since 1994)

some dude, Monday, 13 September 2010 13:35 (thirteen years ago) link

could have just as easily gone for coldplay, jew, b182, yyys, even u2

2000s were a great decade for rock music. so many monster hooks! what more can you ask for?

max, Monday, 13 September 2010 13:54 (thirteen years ago) link

You better watch your back
Cuz I'm fuckin' up your program
And if your stuck up
You just lucked up
Next in line to get fucked up
Your best bet is to stay away motherfucker
Its just one of those days!!

sort of hard to believe that that was from the 2000s, feels like a whole different world

max, Monday, 13 September 2010 14:00 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i could've sworn that was 99 ish

"Break Stuff" was released as a single in spring 2000 but was from a '99 album fwiw

some dude, Monday, 13 September 2010 14:05 (thirteen years ago) link

I will most likely be the sole Incubus vote. There are plenty of songs by bands represented here that I like better (Weezer, Foo Fighters, White Stripes), but dude mostly picked songs that I didnt' care much about.

hypo ilxa/hermes ban (kkvgz), Monday, 13 September 2010 14:06 (thirteen years ago) link

can't stand MCR but some dude OTM about #'s 2 & 3. Will prolley vote Clocks but let the record show that although now it suffers from permanent exposure, when it first came out, the presence of Chop Suey on the radio was absolutely exhilirating...

my list

clocks
chop suey
maps
hard to explain
mr. brightside
swing swing
send the pain below
word up
the fixer
icky thump*

*the one instance where I really thought that the artist in question put out loads of better singles in the decade, though god bless you for snubbing "Seven Nation Army", which I find insufferable. I still would've chose either "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" or "Hardest Button to Button" instead (and either one would've been my no-contest pick easy...)
