HOW DOES IT HAPPEN SO QUICKLY?

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 15 February 2004 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

How does what happen so quickly?

Alexxiss, Sunday, 15 February 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

If Slipknot had only released an EP containing the first six tracks from their Roadrunner debut, and then broken up, they'd have secured themselves a place in rock history alongside the Sex Pistols as one of the greatest tear-your-face-off bands ever. They could even have put out a full-length with those six tracks, and then maybe the first seven or eight tracks from Iowa as Side Two. That would be a slightly diminished achievement, but still pretty goddamn great. But both their albums sag badly in the stretch, and I'm not looking forward to their "ambitious" third one much at all.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Sunday, 15 February 2004 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I have agree with that. The first half of Slipknot's proper debut is occasionally brilliant, despite all the hubbub. I really have no love for their image, however, which is what's mostly kept me from buying it.

Slipknot career trajectory = Machine Head + 6 years.

Phil OTM about first 6 tracks from Slipknot's debut. Those tracks are the reason why I don't bash them automatically like I do almost all other nu-metal bands. I never liked their ruber mask gimmick/image though, and their fans are really annoying.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 06:12 (twenty-two years ago)

eh, "rubber" mask not "ruber".

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 06:18 (twenty-two years ago)

All you "haters" just hate Slipknot because you all know that Slipknot is fuckin good and you guys can't stand that. You refuse to be a part of something so pure and so good that you hate it. Maybe instead of hating Slipknot, you should be hating yourselves for having narrow-minds and not opening up to something truly great.

Mike Garcia, Tuesday, 9 March 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Like I stated before, Slipknot is great. I actually went to see them play at the Universal Amphitheater on May 11th and they were so awesome. The new songs are very good. I like them. And the new masks are even better in person. SLIPKNOT RULES...

Or maybe....just maybe....we can see Slipknot for the wildly derivative, thoroughly unoriginal and quite depressingly juvenile stack of crap that it is. The only thing "truly great" about Slipknot is the amount of precious time you're wasting listening to them.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 15 May 2004 03:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh is that right? Sounds like you're one of those narrow-minded people that just go along with all the other incompetent people that say things like "Slipknot this and Slipknot that". So how can you say that I'm wasting my time listening to them when you probably haven't heard much from them in the first place. To me, you're just a waste of a life for being so goddamn narrow-minded.

Mike Garcia, Saturday, 15 May 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Because I'm 36 and know better.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 15 May 2004 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

alex remember when you railed against closed minded old people who hated punk when you were a kid?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 15 May 2004 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

true. jess, but at least punk was something genuinely new at the time.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 15 May 2004 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

b-but you were eight in 1976?!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 15 May 2004 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

9, actually. And listening to Kiss at the time (to whom Slipknot owe a thing or two anyway).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 15 May 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Overzealous fans calling other people narrow-minded: classic or dud?

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 16 May 2004 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

classic

Not really. It had been around for quite some time. I mean, not as punk, but if you listen to some garage tunes, it sounds very similar, no? So it wasn't like it came out of the blue. Secondly I don't see *new* as an inherently good thing. Why does it have to be new to be good?

A couple of years ago when Slipknot played Roseland just before Subliminal Verses came out, I went backstage to visit Corey (vocalist). I'd interviewed him for Alternative Press and told him stories about the porn magazine I was editing at the time. So I got to the dressing room door and asked one of the guys who came out to tell him that "Phil from High Society is here." He came out a minute later laughing and said, "Dude, my wife is in there! You should have seen the look she gave me!"

I'm a total Slipknot apologist. Their lyrics and appproach are dopey dogshit, but you can't deny that they do more with "sound" than any other metal band outside of Strapping Young Lad. Christ, there's fucking NINE of them, and itdoesn't sound like a goddamn mess. Also, they bring it live.

This isn't to say that you need more than one record to get their "deal." Their new live record is pretty righteous in that you can actually hear all three drummers on it, so it's a lot heavier than their overprocessed studio albums.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Saturday, 5 November 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Cool - maybe I'll pick it up. I no longer own Iowa, and never bought Subliminal Verses because the idea of a Slipknot power ballad made me retch. But the price is right for the double live disc - $16.99 at my local place.

"We aren't hiding behind these masks, we're actually revealing more to you than you might think. The mask I wear brings out all the shit inside me that I hate. Plus it hurts like hell, which helps my intensity." "If you feel like talking, you talk, if you don't, you don't" “So many people are like, 'Gimmick, gimmick, gimmick!', Fuck you! You don't know what we're about! Our motto has always been, 'Music First.' Even if the masks and the coveralls weren't there, the music would still be good." - Corey
