J0rdan S., Tuesday, 10 August 2010 01:47 (thirteen years ago) link

the best fab line in years is from TNIC when he goes "i'm in the car, mellow, fuckin with that la la"

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 10 August 2010 01:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Is it funny that I sort of want to vote for Young Gunz?

Tolaca Luke (admrl), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 01:49 (thirteen years ago) link

I wanna be all devil's advocate but the top two are pretty great imo

Tolaca Luke (admrl), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 01:50 (thirteen years ago) link

hip-hop songs that reference nirvana or kurt cobain

zvookster, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 01:59 (thirteen years ago) link

good looking out on that folder j0rdan. i typed this already but i guess i put it on the wrong thread or something.

zvookster, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:00 (thirteen years ago) link

lex otm about "addictive". great performance, great tune. obv rakim is great on it too, but some of you are paying more attentionto the names involved than the actual song

"mc hammer" (f/ mc hammer) (The Reverend), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:34 (thirteen years ago) link

i thought truth hurts performance was a lil over the top & silly -- its sorta telegraphed by how hugely wide her mouth opens in the video

blap...tremendo (deej), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:35 (thirteen years ago) link

not kidding!!

blap...tremendo (deej), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:36 (thirteen years ago) link

like shes hyper-enunciating/acting the singing

blap...tremendo (deej), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:37 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah her/the song is kinda weird and campy. it works, but it also makes total sense that she was a one hit wonder, have no idea how that approach would work more than once.

dark twisted fanta girl (some dude), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:44 (thirteen years ago) link

agreed

after i reviewed keyshia cole for stylus back in the day i got sent a copy of her follow up album. p unlistenable

blap...tremendo (deej), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:47 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i was just basing my reaction to rakims verse on his name and not on the fact that it fucking slays... great name though

max, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:54 (thirteen years ago) link

it does fucking slay! i didn't deny that

"mc hammer" (f/ mc hammer) (The Reverend), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 03:17 (thirteen years ago) link

oh i didnt notice i was too busy reading his name over and over

max, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 03:25 (thirteen years ago) link

i love the "k" especially, its great

max, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 03:26 (thirteen years ago) link

yeesh. that wasn't even in reference to you, really

"mc hammer" (f/ mc hammer) (The Reverend), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 03:32 (thirteen years ago) link

im taking it very personally

max, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 03:41 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah her/the song is kinda weird and campy. it works, but it also makes total sense that she was a one hit wonder, have no idea how that approach would work more than once.

i never did pick up TH's album...really kinda intrigued by it now though. the closest comparison point i'm coming up with is the similarly campy blu cantrell, who never really worked over a whole album either.

keyshia cole is different surely, the reason she's never clicked for me outside of a few singles and guest appearances is that she always comes across as a b-grade mary j blige. not bad or ineffective exactly, but just...too similar and just not quite as good.

obv rakim's verse slays, and truth hurts' vocals slay, and the beat slays, the entire song slays and that's why it's here right? i just don't think any of its components outshine the others.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 10:25 (thirteen years ago) link

i guess rev was talking about me and yeah i guess i am in the minority finding rakim's attempt in his 40s to suddenly pretend he is scarface a smh moment.

a hoy hoy, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 11:03 (thirteen years ago) link

neither t.hurts nor rakim woulda had a hit there without each other, they're perfectly balanced to the beat. such be the typical synergy dummies appear not to fathom on a rap/rnb crossover list thread.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 11:10 (thirteen years ago) link

although yeah deej was right the first time with the 'paid in full' throwback observation - rakim's effect is in sheer presence, as well as complimentary vocal timbre, rather than hm having like a notably hot 16 or whatever

bleek analogy is completely nonsensical so i dunno what to say about that

r|t|c, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 11:15 (thirteen years ago) link

and double yeah, truth hurts is awesome on that shit fuiud

r|t|c, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 11:16 (thirteen years ago) link

as the person who started this disagreement let me be clear: fuiud

max, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 20:40 (thirteen years ago) link

truth hurts iirc

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 10 August 2010 20:44 (thirteen years ago) link

"b-grade mary j blige" is giving Keyshia Cole WAAAAAY too much credit

people are for loving (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 20:50 (thirteen years ago) link

i have been listening solely to these songs since this thread was created; it is v pleasant

"b-grade mary j blige" is giving Keyshia Cole WAAAAAY too much credit

i was being kind, i did waver over whether to type b or c

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 20:52 (thirteen years ago) link

I'd say maybe x, and that's ONLY because I didn't want to strangle her on "Last Night"

people are for loving (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 20:53 (thirteen years ago) link

so does that make k.michelle b-grade kc or z-grade mjb...?

r|t|c, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 21:19 (thirteen years ago) link

yahhh k. cole is insufferable

The Reverend, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 21:20 (thirteen years ago) link

keyshia has some joints

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 10 August 2010 21:21 (thirteen years ago) link

she also needs a lozenge in the worst way

people are for loving (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 21:22 (thirteen years ago) link

so in "let it go," she should really be singing about mucus, is what you're saying?

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 10 August 2010 21:23 (thirteen years ago) link

and in "last night" she should be singing about putting on nasal strips?

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 10 August 2010 21:23 (thirteen years ago) link

in general I just want her to stop singing but making everything be about the chronicles of her hideously-abused larynx would have been funny

people are for loving (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 21:24 (thirteen years ago) link

i have no use for her beyond those two songs and gifs of her mother

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 10 August 2010 21:25 (thirteen years ago) link

ha her reality show did make me stop outright hating her, it's true

people are for loving (HI DERE), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 21:26 (thirteen years ago) link

i have no use for her beyond those two songs and gifs of her mother

blap...tremendo (deej), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 23:58 (thirteen years ago) link

fuck haters itt

blap...tremendo (deej), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 23:58 (thirteen years ago) link

& shes a way more consistent/powerful performer than any truth hurts album track ive ever heard

blap...tremendo (deej), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 23:59 (thirteen years ago) link

"Next Episode" or "Signs" tbh

'ray Clamence (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 00:01 (thirteen years ago) link

i cant vote for 'next episode' just cuz it doesnt feel like it belongs here

blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 00:01 (thirteen years ago) link

It doesn't but I'm taking a "which of these tracks do I like best?" stance.

'ray Clamence (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 00:04 (thirteen years ago) link

so does dan perry hate keyshia cole as much as he loves the star wars prequels

blap...tremendo (deej), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 00:10 (thirteen years ago) link

if I send you a check for 50 cents will you get off of my dick

people are for loving (HI DERE), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 00:42 (thirteen years ago) link

fun fact: a full 1/3rd of these songs aren't about love or sex or relationships in any way, it's not like "The Next Episode" is the only outlier.

Keyshia Cole is a really solid singles artist, even if she comes off like a Mary J. clone and her singing is goofy sometimes really i feel like she's earned her spot with some good songs
