I guess I was pretty open about that...Thing is, in '79, you could show up to a high-school class drunk or stoned, and--at least if your grades were good--it didn't seem to be a big deal if you confined yourself to being giggle-happy. I don't how that's received today; I suspect not as well, unless it's viewed as much less of a problem than bringing a gun to school. I shouldn't talk about former most classmates, but the two most...unusual people there are Keith Davies, who really did talk like Kermit the Frog, and Joy Fenton, who was a Trekkie.

clemenza, Monday, 19 July 2010 19:49 (thirteen years ago) link

Standard post-after corrections:

1. "don't know how"
2. "talk about former classmates"

one year passes...

questions:

1) can anyone direct me to a really good cover of "danger bird"? has such a thing ever happened?
2) what is the longest, most freaked out version of "danger bird" that ny/ch has recorded?

thank you

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Thursday, 15 March 2012 16:25 (twelve years ago) link

don't know if i've heard a cover of "danger bird" -- I'm sure one exists.
this is interesting -- it was recorded before "Danger Bird" -- but maybe not released? some similarities.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lO_b44e84zM
as for long, freaked out versions, I've heard him do it on the greendale tour where there's this big massed choir singing at some point. pretty freaky.

tylerw, Thursday, 15 March 2012 16:28 (twelve years ago) link

whoa @ link wray!!! a lot of similarities. great song!

is the greendale tour version available/recorded? i want to hear it reaaaaaally noisy.

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Thursday, 15 March 2012 16:42 (twelve years ago) link

i think just on bootleg. lemme see if i can dig it out for you.

tylerw, Thursday, 15 March 2012 16:45 (twelve years ago) link

:) thanks!!

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Thursday, 15 March 2012 16:46 (twelve years ago) link

Danger Bird appears on Neil's 1997 live album 'Year of the Horse.' It's 13:34 long. Personally I much prefer the original version on 'Zuma' but if you want to hear a really long performance of it then check out 'Year of the Horse.' It's also featured in the movie of the same name.

agnosy, Thursday, 15 March 2012 17:22 (twelve years ago) link

I know that one! I think the Year of the Horse version is why I love this song so much tbh. Guess I should have mentioned that.

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Thursday, 15 March 2012 17:23 (twelve years ago) link

i think ny & ch had only played it once before the year of the horse tour. it took them more than 20 years to learn it.
there's also a kind of cool solo piano version from 2003 or so. not long, but pretty intense.

tylerw, Thursday, 15 March 2012 17:25 (twelve years ago) link

Kinda surprised there aren't a bunch of covers of Danger Bird, seems ripe for that.

yeah surprised by that -- such a lovely song. maybe the best CSNY thing ever?

tylerw, Thursday, 15 March 2012 17:28 (twelve years ago) link

and as for covers of danger bird, seems like some band like Earth should be doing it.

tylerw, Thursday, 15 March 2012 17:29 (twelve years ago) link

Laura, I'm not sure in which show Neil played the longest version of Danger Bird but in case you're interested in tracking down bootlegs, this site lists all 39 performances of the song.

exactly what i was thinking!!!

agnosy, thank you -- those are some ridiculous setlists!! i saw NY only once, on my 25th birthday in 2000.

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Thursday, 15 March 2012 17:55 (twelve years ago) link

Ha! Here's the setlist.

2000-08-23, Alltel Pavilion at Walnut Creek, Raleigh, North Carolina, USA
w/ The Friends And Relatives
Motorcycle Mama / Powderfinger / Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere / I Believe In You / Unknown Legend / Dance Dance Dance / Buffalo Springfield Again / Razor Love / From Hank To Hendrix / Daddy Went Walkin' / Peace Of Mind / Walk On / Winterlong / Bad Fog Of Loneliness / Words / Harvest Moon / World On A String / Tonight's The Night // Like A Hurricane // Mellow My Mind

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Thursday, 15 March 2012 18:03 (twelve years ago) link

hee hee, that sugar mtn site is pretty fun. setlists galore! posters! ticket stub scans!
was just listening to that road rocks live disc (which i think is the tour you saw). not amazing, but some col stuff, like the drums/guitar duel that "cowgirl in the sand" turns into.

tylerw, Thursday, 15 March 2012 18:08 (twelve years ago) link

La Lechera: somebody named 27 does a good cover of "Danger Bird." It's on Songs from the Edge of the Wing, if you can find it.

clemenza, Thursday, 15 March 2012 18:33 (twelve years ago) link

Thx clemenza - I listened on myspace -- not bad! Sounds pretty faithful to the original aside from the female vocals? I find myself wanting everyone in this band to go a little more nuts, though. I'm probably in the minority in that regard -- most people like more normal singing/pretty voices. She has a pretty voice.

If this super doomy mega heavy loud cover of Danger Bird doesn't exist yet, can I put out a request for ILX musicians to please get on it? There should be an all-requests ILX comp.

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Thursday, 15 March 2012 18:42 (twelve years ago) link

I adore this record.

That's good and sloppy!!

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Thursday, 15 March 2012 18:56 (twelve years ago) link

Man, never heard the Link Wray song or this Peter Laughner song, both of which are great. Is this Laughner song on an oficial album? Mostly know him from Rocket From the Tombs etc. associations.

grandavis, Thursday, 15 March 2012 18:59 (twelve years ago) link

Watching you with one green eye

It's a cover of a Richard and Linda Thompson song, it is included on the Laughner comp Take the Guitar Player for a Ride.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 15 March 2012 19:01 (twelve years ago) link

Cool, thanks. Think I knew it was a cover, but I haven't dug into much Richard (or R&Linda) Thompson stuff. Great cover though.

grandavis, Thursday, 15 March 2012 19:03 (twelve years ago) link

<3 calvary cross btw, excellent song!! i had never heard that cover before. initially i was impressed only by the sloppiness, but that's what was missing from the danger bird cover posted upthread. it was good, but polite.

no problemo.
listening to these, it *is* really ridiculous that Earth hasn't covered this song. is there a petition we can get going?

tylerw, Friday, 16 March 2012 17:54 (twelve years ago) link

i would both sign and distribute that petition

i just wanted to reiterate that i am a real person who has genuine thanks for all of these danger birds.

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Friday, 16 March 2012 18:16 (twelve years ago) link

Listening to 40 min of Danger Bird reminds me of when NY says "It's all one song!" on Year of the Horse. In this case, it is ALL THE SAME SONG. I love it!

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Friday, 16 March 2012 19:44 (twelve years ago) link

hee hee, yeah. if i was more technologically adept, i'd mix all of these into one continuous track.

tylerw, Friday, 16 March 2012 19:45 (twelve years ago) link

some seriously weird shit going on in the santa cruz version! also enthusiastic belting FLYYYYYYY <3

Laura Lucy Lynn (La Lechera), Friday, 16 March 2012 20:03 (twelve years ago) link

yeah that one is great, almost like he's not sure where to go with it. seems to be the only time he did it like that.
