Ah, well, I still think Dig Your Own Hole is one of the finest rekkids evah.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 June 2003 08:18 (twenty years ago) link

The Chemical Brothers were occasionally pretty alright. Dance music for people who didn't like dance music, what's wrong with that? I didn't think they were going to save either dance music or rock music, but they were pretty entertaining. Ditto Manitoba.

kate (kate), Thursday, 19 June 2003 08:20 (twenty years ago) link

Exactly. I'm completely unarsed by the idea of anyone 'saving' anything these days. All I'm looking for is stuff that I'm going to enjoy in whatever way for whatever reason, and Manitoba fits the bill incredibly well.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 June 2003 08:26 (twenty years ago) link

Ah right, so it's not just me. Could no-one have explained that Monitoba sound like the chemical brothers before I bought the album? I would've saved myself the trouble.

Also, could noone have told me that the Postal Service record sounds like FUCKING DUBSTAR! IDM my arse.

Steve.n. (sjkirk), Thursday, 19 June 2003 08:33 (twenty years ago) link

Dubstar sound like Motorhead next to them.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 19 June 2003 08:37 (twenty years ago) link

I don't think manitoba does sound that much like Chem Bros though, only bits of the drums.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 June 2003 08:44 (twenty years ago) link

sounds more like groove armada to me. which probably isn't a good thing for me personally

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Thursday, 19 June 2003 08:46 (twenty years ago) link

Groove Armada? Fucking hell, have you got the same record?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 June 2003 08:48 (twenty years ago) link

it was lil bit tongue in cheek

Bob Shaw (Bob Shaw), Thursday, 19 June 2003 08:56 (twenty years ago) link

Thought it must be!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 June 2003 08:57 (twenty years ago) link

Tho it is my fault really. I should've known if wasn't for me when the main review on the little sticker on the cover was a rave review from Loaded. I almost feel dirty buying something recommended by Loaded.

Steve.n. (sjkirk), Thursday, 19 June 2003 08:58 (twenty years ago) link

I'm still meh on this. I can see the appeal but there's no wya I love it. My opinion:

http://www.bleed-music.com/new/albums/story.asp?id=1507

(Less knowledgable (and shorter) than Nick's).

Ned, have you heard it yet?

mei (mei), Thursday, 19 June 2003 10:08 (twenty years ago) link

This sounds like the warm headache and the swirly feeling you get in your stomach just before you vomit.

You've eaten too much pink candy floss and been on the whirly spinney things at the fair and that's okay because those whirly spinning things could only make a complete pussy throw up but now it's your headache and your swirly feeling and your candy floss puke on the pavement and you're the pussy and the floor's still spinning and will it ever stop?

This sounds like the BEST MUSIC EVAH!!! I love candy floss! I love the whirly spinny thing! I always throw up, but the sensation of eating candy floss and whirling is so great that it's worth it!

kate (kate), Thursday, 19 June 2003 10:11 (twenty years ago) link

Aye, great review mei!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 June 2003 11:08 (twenty years ago) link

Do you know, it is almost AN EXACT COPY of the second Chapterhouse album?

heh. I was waiting for someone to mention this. Haven't seen that remarked upon in too many, or any, really, reviews.

sample email exchange from buddy to me:

"Dude, what's it sound like, anyway?"

"Heh. First track sounds like Chapterhouse with more reverb. This is kinda neat."

[...30 minutes pass...]

"Dude! get this! this is fucking killer!"

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 19 June 2003 14:16 (twenty years ago) link

kate et al; would I like Blood Music? Is it worth tracking down?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 June 2003 14:28 (twenty years ago) link

I'm going to go home tonight and dig it out and give it another listen. But it's got that shoegazer atmospherics combined with pretty vocal harmonies and dance beats (though it's more baggy/techno crossover than it is IDM or anything like that). I have no idea how hard it would be to get hold of now, though. It bombed at the time, and it's passed way beyond used bin status.

kate (kate), Thursday, 19 June 2003 14:31 (twenty years ago) link

I've spotted a couple of copies at netsounds.com; some of them have a bonus CD.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 19 June 2003 14:53 (twenty years ago) link

You know, I don't ever think I've actually listened to the bonus CD. It's still in storage back somewhere at my mum's!

kate (kate), Thursday, 19 June 2003 14:58 (twenty years ago) link

found it in a used shop either in Ann Arbor, or in Austin, so it's out there, somewhere...

Kingfish (Kingfish), Thursday, 19 June 2003 14:58 (twenty years ago) link

kate et al; would I like Blood Music? Is it worth tracking down?

Nah, not really worth tracking down, but if you see it and its reasonably priced give it a shot. A 2 Disc version with several remixes exists as well. I like the Manitoba album better since its got more Mercury Rev and Sp3 in it. Otherwise the resemblence is striking.

Re: up my ass

I just re-read my review & I stand by it completely. I think I did a pretty good job explaining why the record works & who might like it. What were you expecting after reading my review?

I do think that some of the interest in the Manitoba record, at least from people who liked his first album a lot, is that he went in such a completely different direction. At a time when a lot of people are wondering if IDM has reached a cul de sac, he decided to abandon it for retro pop. If you don't care about electronic music or what Snaith did earlier, the record might have just a little less punch.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 19 June 2003 15:49 (twenty years ago) link

Ned, have you heard it yet?

Nope -- symptomatic of the whole feeling I've got towards listening to music a lot these days, please refer to my various posts on the 'top singles of 2003' thread for more. In this case though, rather than not being all that excited over constant new thrills, I feel dulled by all the Beach Boys/Chapterhouse/Chemicals invocations and can't be bothered to care more. I do again note your comment about sounding like Loveless on its final song but jeez, I've heard enough that wants to sound like Loveless over time after all...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 June 2003 16:03 (twenty years ago) link

(But to add to other matters, Blood Music is rather good, as is Whirlpool and Rownderbowt. ;-))

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 June 2003 16:05 (twenty years ago) link

well put, mark.
after having the record a while (i was drooling over it at first) i must say it gets a touch dull; but his older stuff still gets it up for me.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 19 June 2003 16:11 (twenty years ago) link

Hey Mark,

Your review is accurate, I agree, and many people have been praising Up In Flames, so to blame you specifically was a bit harsh. However, I do stand by the claim that if an act like Beulah was to have made this same album, there is little chance it would have garnered an 8.6. Bands shouldn't be given bonus points just for changing their style or doing something unexpected.

I listen to mountains of indie and electronica, but this album just doesn't turn my crank much. For me, it's too much of a rambling mess. I'll take something like that Digital Jockey album anyday over this. I think it's OK, but not fantastic like many people have asserted.

blutroniq (blutroniq), Thursday, 19 June 2003 18:19 (twenty years ago) link

I really really hate this album.

Also,

Recipe for 'Seething Cozen': just add Four Tet's 'Rounds'.

Cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 19 June 2003 18:24 (twenty years ago) link

i listened to this record twice after hearing so much praise about it and there is absolutely nothing special about it at all. I am left wondering what it is that is exciting people. Domino has put out so much other great music (hood, pram) recently, I'm really bewildered by this (and the james yorkston record too, which similarly got a lot of raves but is staggeringly bland).

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 19 June 2003 19:21 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, that James Yorkston album is... god... indescribably sellable.

Cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 19 June 2003 21:58 (twenty years ago) link

Why do you hate it Cozen?

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 20 June 2003 08:33 (twenty years ago) link

I know it's totally illogical but Four Tet manage to irritate me hugely just because of their name. I'm deliberately not going to liosten to them just because of it.

mei (mei), Friday, 20 June 2003 09:49 (twenty years ago) link

That's your loss then.

I guess with all the nany-nany-poo-poo's this might not be the best time to mention there'll be some West Coast Manitoba/Dabrye dates in September?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 20 June 2003 13:11 (twenty years ago) link

I assume you don't mean West Coast of Devon.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 20 June 2003 13:22 (twenty years ago) link

I quite like Manitoba, I'd go and see them, but I guess that's not the West Coast of Wales yr talking about?

mei (mei), Friday, 20 June 2003 13:23 (twenty years ago) link

Damn you nick!

mei (mei), Friday, 20 June 2003 13:23 (twenty years ago) link

ehehehehehe... I'm going straight to Heck!

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 20 June 2003 13:24 (twenty years ago) link

In case any of you aren't in the know, Manitoba is the name of the lamest province in Canada, and home to Winnipeg, the lamest city in Canada. So a Canadian naming their act Manitoba is akin to an American naming their act err... Iowa or maybe Wyoming.

Speaking of up your ass...

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Friday, 20 June 2003 13:52 (twenty years ago) link

(You tell 'em Sean)

Heh... Sorry my British friends for being so Americancentric (we do that). Isn't Manitoba playing Reading/Leeds though? But 'ere's the dates then:

9/18 San Diego - Casbah
9/19 LA - Spaceland
9/20 San Fran - Bottom of the Hill
9/24 Portland - Medicine Hat Plan B
9/25 Seattle - Chop Suey
9/26 Vancouver - Sonar

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 20 June 2003 14:05 (twenty years ago) link

I was waiting for you or Bryan to respond to that.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Friday, 20 June 2003 14:27 (twenty years ago) link

i listened to this album again today. God, this is so good.

It'll be cool when Dykehouse finally releases his record, so we can match them both up and FITE FITE FITE!

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 20 June 2003 14:33 (twenty years ago) link

My hatred of Manitoba is nothing but irrational, Nick, I'll get back to you though when I find its root and reason.

Cozen (Cozen), Saturday, 21 June 2003 10:19 (twenty years ago) link

I'd tell you to get on aim, Cozen, but I'm just off for lunch.

xx

I used to be like Louis.

seven months pass...

Pitchfork tells me it's been 5 years. I have no desire to ever hear this again.

baaderonixx, Thursday, 3 April 2008 14:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Wow, five years?! That's kind of frightening. I don't listen to this half as often as his last two, but I can still imagine wanting to, and in fact have a couple of times recently.

Scik Mouthy, Thursday, 3 April 2008 15:04 (sixteen years ago) link

Andorra > Flames > Milk > debut

(but this is all relative to mood, i guess)
