Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 23:29 (twenty years ago) link

Ha, I'm compiling this and coming to the realization that at least four of the tracks are going to be directly inspired by my total dorkdom fanboy lurve of Boogie Nights (and one of them is "Sister Christian", ferchrissakes)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Wednesday, 1 October 2003 23:56 (twenty years ago) link

(other three are "God Only Knows", "Driver's Seat" and the Move's "Feel Too Good")

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 2 October 2003 00:25 (twenty years ago) link

Oh, and I don't want to limit the maximum number of tracks, but let's have kbps at 128 at worst; no fair cramming 300 56kbps MP3s on there

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 2 October 2003 00:39 (twenty years ago) link

I'd love to participate if I can actually figure out how to digitize my vinyl shit..

I wasn't quite sure what I was doing. Started out just trying to think of my favourite songs, then tried to focus on ones that 'define me', and then I got more and more confused about what that means. Then I spotted the 'one song per artist' rule and had to get rid of lots. I dunno. It was obviously a bit random. The tokenistic choices define me too.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 2 October 2003 01:00 (twenty years ago) link

Fuck it I forgot Madness's My Girl and had Elsie Carlisle twice.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 2 October 2003 01:09 (twenty years ago) link

just go away - blondie
i'll come running back to you - sam cooke

Please tell me this was intentional

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 2 October 2003 01:44 (twenty years ago) link

ha - no! but most of my favourite songs are about pushing people away or pleading for them to come back. It's my thing.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 2 October 2003 01:53 (twenty years ago) link

nate detritus: The rules: at least 100 songs that define you as a music fan. Songs you do not merely "like" or "nod your head to", but ones so ingrained in your personality, that you're so stupid in love with that you'd inscribe them on your headstone.
If you are actually Nate Patrin in disguise, then check yer mailbox tommorrow. My CD-R will probably be there by then.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Thursday, 2 October 2003 01:53 (twenty years ago) link

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 2 October 2003 01:57 (twenty years ago) link

This is a great idea. Is there any kind of deadline? I don't know if I'm quite prepared yet and it may take a day or so, but I'd be more than happy to ship cds to Europe or wherever mail can be delivered.

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Thursday, 2 October 2003 03:43 (twenty years ago) link

I am trying to do this now and it is driving me insane.

adaml (adaml), Thursday, 2 October 2003 05:04 (twenty years ago) link

I'm working on it as well, and I just got it under 300. How & why do I make the time for this kind of thing?

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Thursday, 2 October 2003 05:14 (twenty years ago) link

Nate is somewhere deep underground, cackling and stroking a white cat.

I curse myself for not organizing anything alphabetically.

adaml (adaml), Thursday, 2 October 2003 05:37 (twenty years ago) link

i've done a CD-R that basically amounts to 'the rarest shit on my hard drive' which won't be saying THAT much but is still a good collection. i may post that elsewhere tho - CD-R according to criteria established by Baron Detritus to follow...

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 2 October 2003 08:15 (twenty years ago) link

I SO WANT THAT CD, STEVE.

adaml (adaml), Thursday, 2 October 2003 08:49 (twenty years ago) link

ahahahahaha
*scratches head, looks around room*
ahahahahahaha

soon.

gaz (gaz), Thursday, 2 October 2003 09:19 (twenty years ago) link

Got all my tracks selected and am burning them for my own (deeeeeevious) listening purposes, but when I get home from work I'll put them in order and post the playlist.

I wound up with about 220 chosen, culled down to 172 (128 kbps). A ton of familiar stuff, though the closest there is to an Annoying Canonical Song is Dylan's "Ballad of a Thin Man". I also have Ice Cube's "It Was A Good Day" so no complaints pls

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 2 October 2003 09:42 (twenty years ago) link

I'll get in on this, but it will be next week before I can actually post something. I love trades.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 2 October 2003 11:15 (twenty years ago) link

hmm could be interesting. let me try to put something together.

Chris V. (Chris V), Thursday, 2 October 2003 11:33 (twenty years ago) link

Haha, I was trying to decide if "It Was a Good Day" should be on mine, too! Sadly, I figure that it will take me at least a month to decide on 100 songs. There are bands I love that have plenty of great songs, but no stand-out track. This makes my head hurt.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 2 October 2003 14:19 (twenty years ago) link

this is really hard!!

gabbo giftington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 2 October 2003 14:23 (twenty years ago) link

THIS IS COOL.

It may take me a day or two or three, but I'm in.

scott m (mcd), Thursday, 2 October 2003 14:27 (twenty years ago) link

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Thursday, 2 October 2003 19:52 (twenty years ago) link

oh wait: AT LEAST 100? damn.

adaml (adaml), Thursday, 2 October 2003 19:56 (twenty years ago) link

I would also love to exchange some cd-rs.

My list is down to 170 songs, which all fit onto one cd-r, and none of the songs are under 128. Woohoo! I think I'll listen to it some and move the tracks around and probably eliminate many before I post it, but I'm hoping the list'll be ready sometime tonight.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 3 October 2003 00:19 (twenty years ago) link

Looks like a good mix, stevem. I'd love a copy.

I feel bad, because no matter how hard I try (not very), I keep coming up with multiple tracks by a few of the same artists. Does that alone make me a terrible person?

Damn - I forgot the Modern Lovers' "I'm Straight" and Roy Orbison's "In Dreams". Lucky I'd only listed 101 so far.

Two votes for 'Tugboat' in a row!

Actually, there's probably fucking loads I forgot. I just wanted to be first.

I can't believe I've got no Prince or Talking Heads on mine. Glaring.

scott m (mcd), Friday, 3 October 2003 16:39 (twenty years ago) link

Two in a row for Liz Phair's 'Divorce Song' and three over all, so far.

Switching Roy Orbison from 'In Dreams' to 'Only the Lonely' was pretty much the last change I made.

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Friday, 3 October 2003 16:42 (twenty years ago) link

Nate, can you clarify this please:

One song per "billed" artist (use discretion re: "featuring..." appearances or production spots)

Are we allowed to have both Luna and Galaxie 500, both Morrissey and the Smiths?

I'm only at about 600 MB w/my mp3s, I'm gonna have to rip some vinyl.

I recently put together Vol. 3 of mine. Still no repeated artists.

It was ridiculous trying to pick one Miles Davis song.

I still would love to do this sometime. The only one I've heard is Kenan's, which is how I know he loves Chaka Khan's "I Feel for You."

i want to re-do mine, because my tastes have changed so much...

maybe i will start working on it tomorrow

I'm in. I jump at any excuse to spend hours preparing themed compilations, especially those which involve such a creative/selective challenge.

what a difference 5 years make. this is more like the I Got A Ipod Shuffle As A Present challenge now

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 05:58 (fifteen years ago) link

Well it's the "songs that are PART OF WHO YOU ARE" part that makes the 'challenge,' isn't it?

art tatum HOOS & chopped (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Wednesday, 17 September 2008 06:04 (fifteen years ago) link

The length requirement seems pretty arbitrarily chosen unless we'll be swapping physical CD-Rs via the mail (which I'd gather is the idea?).

i'm in and would love to trade
It reminds me of the mid 80s trading seriously dodgy live tapes of terrible hardcore punk bands.

I need time though.

And I'm going to make no excuses for the predictable.

Then I realise that the original request was 2004!!!! Fuck!!!!

But it looks like the BIG HOOS is rallying the Troops again?

Problem is I go on holiday next week. So I will be unavailable for a fortnight

^ can't wait to trade and outclass 'Internet Person's' - he's missing some Kevin Keegan though!
