The hybrid guitar/bass solo from "Battery in Your Leg" and the moment that Albarn first goes falsetto in a track the name of which I have momentarily forgotten (or perhaps never bothered to learn) are the only items from Think Tank that truly passed muster for me, and I am a Blur Fan. I like a few songs from the album, but my head and heart aren't in agreement like they usually are with matters Blur.

I'm guessing everything I voted for bar the 'Babes is coming up next week (yes, I didn't vote Jamelia. I can only really get into it anymore by watching the video, which South African sat-TV luurrrrrrrrrvvvves).

I am a Blur fan and 'Out Of Time' is merely average.

Sixpence None The Richer meets Dubstar uptown.

Comments: (It made m tear up) especially the "... I'll take her home after midnight, and if she likes I'll tell her lies, of how we'll be in love by the morning" part. I'm welling up thinking about it right now. Spencer Chow

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 17:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Outed as a tweeist.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 17:54 (nineteen years ago) link

That song is also great because of it's portrait of lonely longing lovelorn media professionals who lament "my office glows, all night long, it's a nuclear show, and the stars are gone".

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 18:05 (nineteen years ago) link

why did I forget to vote why did I forget to vote why did I forget to vote argh argh argh

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 18:06 (nineteen years ago) link

if people want to provide comments, gmail me telling me what kind of stuff you'd like to write a paragraph or three about and I'll pick one of the remaining tracks for you (to then be approved or rejected by you). it will speed up the process.

in other news, I THINK I HAVE MADE A MISTAKE! it's not catastrophic at all but it will mean I need to recount votes for one track and the eponymous album it's form. If the missing points remain missing then everything from 86 upwards will move up one place and what would've been 75 will now be 86. Argh. And sorry.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 18:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Spencer otm otm otm. I think I totally missed that swoonable track somehow.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 18:20 (nineteen years ago) link

I regretted not voting for Stars (though it felt like I couldn't help it).

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 18:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Every time Spencer talks about Stars I kick myself for not seeing the show last year. What the hell was I thinking?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 18:39 (nineteen years ago) link

neurotic I don't remember if I wrote much in the way of commentary so if you have anything left I wouldn't mind (I don't know how to gmail, I'm such a loser)

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 18:41 (nineteen years ago) link

how to gmail: delete the ANGSTA

i'll mail you tho cheers

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 18:42 (nineteen years ago) link

thanks again for this Stevem, I think it's a great way to remind people of earlier ILM touchstones - I'm especially sympathetic to this project as I feel ILM has veered in another musical direction lately (a direction not to my tastes - haha).

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:18 (nineteen years ago) link

i dont think ive been around long enough to see much change, spencer - can you be more specific without starting a war?

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:22 (nineteen years ago) link

ILM is less gay now.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:25 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't think I'm really capable of giving a definitive answer for what my gut-sense tells me has changed. I could say that it's less 'poppist' but that would be misleading as non-pop has always been eagerly embraced here too. I guess I miss the serious-minded and sublime discussion of chart-pop/rap/etc.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:32 (nineteen years ago) link

That goes for new dance stuff and cheery indie too.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:35 (nineteen years ago) link

fair enough

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Also, what bnw said, but the macho-ization of ILM has been a recurring criticism (though maybe it's finally really dominant).

Sorry stevem, perhaps this is not the proper thread.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:39 (nineteen years ago) link

too much dick waving

artdamages (artdamages), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:00 (nineteen years ago) link

This is a great, great list. I am downloading Stars now. Also I just put Two Months Off back on again and am remembering how much I loved it...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:02 (nineteen years ago) link

someone should put up all the songs together on slsk

artdamages (artdamages), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:06 (nineteen years ago) link

I guess I miss the serious-minded and sublime discussion of chart-pop/rap/etc.

In respects its best defender/exponent, Mr. Ewing himself, has taken that to FT instead of here, though admittedly he made a very interesting post there today regarding reacting to music which I can sympathize with.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes, my track pick made the list! I wasn't sure how liked "Two Months Off" was/is by ILXors (and I sort of still don't, I guess).

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:18 (nineteen years ago) link

It was a bit of a lukewarm Jamelia write-up wasn't it? Sorry Lex! Stevem asked me to do one and I thought I'd have a stab at it but I didn't vote for her. Of course my notion was that she'd turn up between two glittery pop beauties, not between Steve Albini and an atypically tedious Dismemberment Plan track.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:23 (nineteen years ago) link

The couple of writeups I've submitted have reminded me that I once loved being a student music journalist.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:32 (nineteen years ago) link

I voted for Two Months Off, in my Top 10, I think.

That Stars track is magnificent. More indie records like this please.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Also I'm going to put my neck on the line now and say that I think One More Time will win this.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:37 (nineteen years ago) link

i got my money on hey ya

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:38 (nineteen years ago) link

I've been betting on Daft Punk, but I actually think Digital Love is the one that might come in for a semi-surprise win.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:40 (nineteen years ago) link

I dont think OMT will even be the highest Daft Punk track.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:41 (nineteen years ago) link

It got a hate vote!

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:42 (nineteen years ago) link

i think (hope?) "digital love" will win. i know at least four or five people who voted for it as their number one.

jess, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:43 (nineteen years ago) link

I'd put a pony on the Avalanches to win.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:43 (nineteen years ago) link

i couldn't even really do a proper 15 since at least four or five songs i'd put in my top 10 weren't even nominated.

jess, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:43 (nineteen years ago) link

I've just remembered I've got the actual proper single of the Stars track upstairs. I'm not sure I've ever listened to it. Crikey. I should point out that it really was packaged in a proper envelope. Very possibly with an actual stamp and everything.

And I have this weird feeling ballboy probably won't be looming on the rails to snatch this. Curse me for not noticing the deadline.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Having got Stevem drunk in the pub last week I can say no more about possible outcomes. :(

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:46 (nineteen years ago) link

what are the non-nominated songs jess?

artdamages (artdamages), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:47 (nineteen years ago) link

I bet "Romeo" will do really well.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Haha, Tico.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:50 (nineteen years ago) link

kylie - "love at first sight"
andrew wk - "i get wet" (track, not album)
no doubt - "underneath it all" (maybe)
more fire crew - "oi" (maybe)
some other stuff i'm forgetting

jess, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:52 (nineteen years ago) link

the kylie oversight is the biggest

jess, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:54 (nineteen years ago) link

my number one was "I Luv U"

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:56 (nineteen years ago) link

You know, Jess, I was this close to nominating "Love at First Sight" and probably should've, considering that I don't think my Phoenix track will get all that much love.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:58 (nineteen years ago) link

i blew my nomination on "pulse x" because i don't think i understood the rules fully (i.e. i thought i'd get to nominate again.)

jess, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:00 (nineteen years ago) link

My top 15 wasn't genuinely representative, but I can live with it. I stated my 'Digital Love' tip elsewhere, and expect big things for 'Get Ur Freak On', 'Since I Left You' and 'I Luv U' too.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:01 (nineteen years ago) link

You nominated "Too Young", jay? I nominated "If I Ever Feel Better", which I think has similarly been overlooked. By fools.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:01 (nineteen years ago) link

My #2 was "Heart Failed..." by Saint Etienne naturally

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:03 (nineteen years ago) link

Nice picks, LA Gear. My number 7 was "I Luv U." My number one was DER STREETZ (obv).
