With a click, with a shock,
Phone'll jingle, door'll knock
...open the latch...
Something's coming, don't know when, but it's soon –
Catch the moon, one-handed catch!

omg I forgot until just now how often my roommate sang "Maria." There was this one-month period where he opened up all his music practice by singing/playing "Maria," and he was always humming and muttering it around the house. I found out a few weeks in the waitress-of-the-month he was bringing home to fuck was named Maria.

Actually, I meant to vote for "Cool" or "The Jet Song."

one year passes...

kinda off topic but I don't think this post warrants a new thread.

saw the touring version of this the other night. was fucking great. the music has aged very very well, so very timeless, and the choreography was gorgeous.

still my favorite dialogue in the show:

Doc: You people make this world LOUSY!
Action: It's the way we found it, Doc.

I read your post abt some guy in the audience who quietly sang along to everything. It made me think of this singalong they are having on Val's Day in my town. He should have gone to that instead.

I still can't believe "America" won this poll!

totally small truffles (Abbbottt), Friday, 4 February 2011 17:01 (thirteen years ago) link

true of any poll, dat.

Mark G, Friday, 4 February 2011 17:05 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm going again tomorrow, only with a much better seat. they're showing the movie tomorrow at the local art movie theatre but that'd be overkill I think!

i pl0p bombs like hiroshima (San Te), Friday, 4 February 2011 17:07 (thirteen years ago) link

I would defs say "America" is the earwormniest, based on how often it gets stuck in my head compared to the others.

just read this the other day due to following a link abt the pixies in a thread abt indie http://freakytrigger.co.uk/ft/2011/01/the-ft-top-100-songs-of-all-time-10-west-side-story-obc-america/

I think "Tonight" is my EASY favorite of the bouncier numbers, and of teh ballads, "A Boy Like That/i Have a Love". I also love all of the instrumental bits too.

many of my favs here barely got any votes! ;_;

teledyldonix, Friday, 4 February 2011 19:39 (thirteen years ago) link

I agree! Love "Cool" so much for example. I feel like it gets made fun of a lot (or just lovingly parodied, like in "Flight of the Concords") BUT I do think it has its finger on the pulse of something nervous and volatile and real!

totally small truffles (Abbbottt), Friday, 4 February 2011 20:41 (thirteen years ago) link

'Somewhere' makes me ;_;

VegemiteGrrrl, Friday, 4 February 2011 20:54 (thirteen years ago) link

"You people make this world LOUSY!"

I believe it's "You KIDS" (at least in the movie).

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Friday, 4 February 2011 20:56 (thirteen years ago) link

I can't remember off hand -- I'm mostly going from what I heard on the stage the other night, but it may have been "you kids!"

i pl0p bombs like hiroshima (San Te), Friday, 4 February 2011 22:19 (thirteen years ago) link

"Cool" is great and the choreography is amazing. can't wati to see it up closer tomorrow night...for $25!

i pl0p bombs like hiroshima (San Te), Friday, 4 February 2011 22:19 (thirteen years ago) link

"Cool" is so iconic, not just the song but the choreography...you can't have West Side Story without Cool.

In Work Freak, Stefan Fastis notes that Marlon Hill (above), Scrabble genius," has "breeze it, buzz it, easy does it" as a personal mantra (along with "know the ledge").

Saw the revival tour last night. I'm pretty gay for this show.
